Correspondence bf tha m liauapults Journal .j LETTER JFItOM THE SEAT OK WAS, A Schooner Captured bg the Seoeth, Under the Guns qf Fori Monroe?-Audacity if the Enemy Our Aimy Qiriei TJte "Ann of the Potomac' Quiet Alto. Camp Hamilton, near Fort Monroe, 1 December 29, 1861. J Ed. Journal: Earty this morning heavy firing was heard in Hampton Roads, and aa soon as the snn dispelled the slight mist upon the surface of the water, all hands could see seven or eight of onr gunboats banging away at a little steamer that was rapidty making for the core of the batteries at Sewell's Point. Tue firing went on for over four hours, aud there was an iatiense flashing of artillery, and terrible plunging of shot and bursting of shell?, sometimes splashing the water, and sometimes bursting in the sky, both shot and stiell falling at a respectful distance from the enemy's batteries, for the boats must have been five miles trom the enemy's guns, and of course filed at a long and deliberate' aim, all of :Whic U was highly ezbiliraticg, and gave to the obscure array of volunteer- staying here an immense idea of the valor1 and prowess of our very energetic N&vy. We trie boys gathered on the hills and watched the great naval battle, and saw the forked flame of the cannon, and heard the big boom of the guns, and wondered all the time where the enemy wa?, for with the exception of the one little steams, cutting along, a big, cloud of smoke rolling from hec p'pe,; no other ob ject was visible, and it did uot, seem likely that all this iuss aud nutter could be a de-. monstrution on the sand banks of Saweli's Point, at such a safe aud respectful distance, too. But, as you read on you shall hear all about it, aud learu to admire the audacity of the enemy, whea contrasted with the lethaigy shown v our side. g . j And now Cor the particulars. At sunrise this morning, as the Newport News steamer was coming to Fortress Mouroe, having in tow a schooner loaded with barrels filled with water for the shipping here, a rebel steamer emerged ambi.i tw.m nn.l, ...o. of the banks, oo our side, where, it Beenn, in spite ot the vigil. mce of the Woekadiug fleet, she had laiu all night, and commanded, firing at the Newport News boat. The Srst shot passed near her plot-houscUlt . I justa3tern; the third over her bow : and iho captain, getting scared, crt! Ue : s'chooiier loose, leaving her crew on iaul. who juuip-d into a small boat and scudded for the shore the steamer scudding for the fort. Well, little secesb ran, up .to the schooner, took., her in tow, aud made for the Point. The roar of caanoa by this time woke up the blockading fleet. But as those boats that bad steam up bad oo officers on board, aud as liiose that had no steam up were not ready, and as it Dcqtiirea an urder, bound with red tape, to do anything, why secesb was sate before a boat moved. But sumelhiug must be dooe. out went the fleet, bang went tlie guns, but uobody was hurt. la the meantime the schooner is lost to us and. gained to secesb. Our gallant navy has bad a fight, aud "no forward movement will be made.'' It is decided here that no forward iduvemeut will be made. The "Army of the Potomac'' is quiet, and uo forward movement will be made. The army here is' quiet al, and uo forward movent l will be made. It is iucouveuient u muke a forward movement. Besides, it. involves danger, and it might make the rebels mat), and a reconstruction of the glorious Lb ion will be impossible, therefore no forward movemeut will be made. U is ueceasucy that our aimy go into wiuter quarters. Ti outsiders should not interfere in military matters. What do they know about war ? Let newspaper editors mind lbuirwn business. The war is to be conducted by etrat-. egy. ''Want to know what that is, do ye?" It's none of your business. Strategy is strategy! Therefore no forward movement will be made. We shall goiuto wiuter quarters. That's what's the matter. What for ? Never you mind. You just pay the taxes. That's all you've got to do. We'll go into winter quarters. "There must be an onward move-act!" What do you know u h . i'i it. ? The e-.emv baeo batterje!. Do you think our Tirana Army is golrn? ctt move on batteries ? No sir-ee ! Ho forward movement will be made. We'll go into winter quarters, We know all about the war. Anl it is our duty to make it last. War is war! And movement is movement. What more would you have? "The people are discontented." The deuce toe are. What do the people know? War is war I Strategy ia strategy 1 Let that suffice. Then the balls, they might hit you in the Stomach ! That would hurt I We 11 go into winter quarters. There must b deliberation. "What is deliberation?'' Deliberation is deliberation 1 There 1 I will not write any more military items. You, people, mind your business. "We'll do the military, if it don't do us 1 The "Army of the Potomac" is all right. It is quiet. What more do you want? Would you have the army uneasy? Never I Perish the thought! Things must remain in statu quo. " What's that?" SUttu quo is statu quo t There, now I am out or all patience, and will employ an amanuensis." "What's that?" Why, thar's what Generals have. The Army of the Potomac regards the safety of the men. In the West, the men are fatigued with long marches, making reconnoissances, ice. all wrong. The Army of the Potomac never wears out its men In that manner. A corpora' and ten men will do the business. " But they are snapped up ! " Well, that shows prudence. Suppose two or three regiments were snapped up ? The Army.of the Potomac is right. It is the intention of the army to move in
e belor. " What's that ? " Why that meats l crooked ! For isn't this a crooked war ? ; The Army of the West hes uo b:-tter sense I than to fight ! Not so with the Army of the Potomac. I , Scekb A General's Tent. Enter a Scout. Scout Sir, the enemy are approaching ! oar pickets six hundred strong, i (rmeral (To Aid-de-ramp.) Take ten men and a corporal and surround him. Enter. Lieutenant Sir, our men have 1 been cwt off. General Indeed ! Take a sergeant aud fifteen men. This is very audacious. I EnterCapiam Sir, our sergeant and squad are captured, j General- This is too annoying. Take u lieutenant and twenty-five men. These I rascals mnst be put down. iSVifrr Major Sir, the enemy ha' e sur1 rounded and taken prisoners our last party, t General This is beyond patience! It I can be stood no longer. Adjutant, i isne an j order that the army go at once into winter l .quarter Erit General in disgust ) ! It is necessary that the people should be i patient. " Rome was not built io a day." j Therefore the people mnst be patient. ! What if we are snubbed by England ? Just ! be patient, and things will come out riht ! that is if everything doa't wear out, j Trust in red tape. If red tape dou't werr out, why you'll find out some time what is going on. It will not do to hurry things,
for then the Sutler won t make anything. Just keep cool, and if the hospital is full of poor, sick soldiers, it is strategy, and stratagy is strategy. Now, go into winter quarters. The army of the Potomac is quiet, and all must be quiet. Still as death. Emblematic of despair. There will be no onward movement. Let grumbling cease. Don't expect me to write any more, for I have borrowed into winter quarters too. Ever yours, E. M. B. H, P. S. An order has been received that the "Army of the Potomac" must wear skyblue breeches. That is good. The enemy will think they are sky, and can't shoot them in the legs. No other news of importence. 2nd P. S. A grand review will be made of the "Army of the Potomac" on account of the breeches. Still Lateb. 3rd P. S. Another corporal and ten men are misssing. The army will positively go into winter quarters. From the piled up orders, and so forth, we will never emerge. E. M. B. H. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. TBwTnSKJWWl J'MKMJVB ' 30 lmn. aew M leat it A.
