Editors Missouri Democrat : One of the sharpest battles of the wa. was fought about eighteen miles from this place to-day. Colonel Birge. commanding his regiment of Sharp Shooters, had learned through his spiis that a rebel tamp was located at a place called Mount Zion .Meeting House, in Boone county. General Prentiss baring come to this place j-ster-day with about three hundred cavalry, under command of Col. Giover, he accordingly organized a command of five companies of Sharp Shooters, ui.der Cil. Birjre, and two hundred cavalry, under Col. Glover, acd moved towards the reTel camr. Arriving withiu about mile, Gen. Prentiss ordered Col. Glover to attack a detachment of about one hundred, which had taken position in a lane. He did so with great gailaalry, killing a number, and ta. king several priaoMr. The others Hed to camp. The order oi battle wis now assumed. Col. Birge, with three companies of bis command, advanced through the field, taking the left, joined the force of Col. Glover, while Gen. Prentiss held position with a reserve of sharp shooters and a portion of cavalry. The attack was commenced in I full force. The fire fro n the whole rebel tine was terrific upon the right wing. For a moment our column wavered and fell back. Col. Birge observing this, ro le into the most perfect storm of leaden hail that was ever j met on battle field, calling upon men to rally. Col. Glover, coming up with Major ; Temple, and uuitiug with Cot. Birge soon j rallied the whole line, and the fight became terrible. Capt. Boyd, advancing from the ; right wing, poured in from the rifles at every fire messengers of death. Col. Birge, with a daring that could not be excelled, led on the left wing. He soou saw the enemy on the right giving way, and sounding the cry of victory the whole line rushed forward, and the rebels fled iu every direction. Col. Birge pursued them, with Capt. Boyd, for two miies, killing four and taking five prisoners. The rebel battle ground what a sight 1 After they had taken aw ay before they fled seven wagoa loads, it was then completely covered with dead and wounded. The rebels had taken choseu ground in the woods where cavalry could not operate. Col. Glover, however, dismounted his cavalry, and led them forward with his usual bravery. The coolness and daring of Col. Birge in rallying his men in the midst'of a perfect tornado of bullets, is deserving of all the praise due to a gallant soldier, and what i3 more for him, during the three li ,urs the battle raged, he never left his position in advance of the liie cheering" his : men on. The rebels io3t in killed, wounded and missing not less than one hundred and fifty. I Ninety horses were taken, and a load of ! arms, "saddles, and ull their camp equipage. I Our loss eight or nine killed, and ahuut 25 ( i wounded. T.
Gen'. Yilsc s's Sctles Dili.. The Washington correspondence of the New York World says : "Colonel Wilson's first idea involved the complete abolition of the office of sutler, and an extensknr of the scope allotted to th qtwriermasier's department; so that the latter mifrht embrace the disposal of thread, needle?, tobacco, rod such other articles as the soidi-.r i- acknowledged to need, but for which chres would have to be made against his pay. This plan is virtually abftodo-ied, on account ot the burdensome addition which it would make to the duties of an ukeady overworked department. Colonel W. now, T believe, proposes the following rtrms: First. That a list of articles, which alone sutlers sbalt be permitted to vend, shall be filled out by a military commission, and made a portion of the army regulations. Second. That every kind of intoxicating liquors sha'tl be excluded from said list. Third. Tfant the schedule of prices which each sutler shall be allowed to charge shall
be arranged not, as the present, by ihe i field officers of tbe regiment but by the I Brigade General, Adjutant, Quartermaster, and Inspector; and that the tariff shall j then be submitted to the Division General j for revision and. approval. Fourth. That a sutler shall be elected I cot by the field officers of the regiment j but by all the commissioned officers, Capi tains aud Lieutenants included. I Fifth. That a sntler violating the condi- ! tions under which he holds office shall not only suffer loss of the position, but confis-I cation ot ail sis wares ar.u mercnanaiee contained witiiiu the army lines.
