From the Indianapolis Journal. TREASON AT WORK ! A SECRET SOCIETY EXPOSED! We presume that no rational man in the nation doubts that there are many disaffected men in the loyal States, who have either pledged themselves to assist the rebellion, or only await an opportunity to do so. The indications of their existence have been too frequent and unequivocal to allow a doubt on that point, but many have doubted whether they could muster audacity enough to engage in any positive acts of hostility. The peril of treason now 13 so great that it is not outraging reason to suppose that the most virulent enemies of the Government have concluded to be quiet, saying nothing publicly, preserving a studious ab- j Ktinence from all topics and altusionj that 1 might irritate loyal feeling against them, and showing their real spirit only in secret rejoicing at national defeats, or in such assaults upon the Government as might be easily attributed to some less obnoxious motive. But though treason might be reasonably supposed to be driven to this concealment, and the course of the Sentinel and other rebel sympathizing organs would confirm the supposition, there is absolute proof that it has not confined itself to such harmless operations. It is actively at work, right in our midst, and in various places in the State. It still preserves its outside appearance of discontented quiet, willing to let the public believe that it is not dead, if they will only believe that it is not at work, but under this veil it is reaching out in all directions to seize and combine the elements of resistance to the Government, and fashion them into a deadly power tor evil. We have, heretofore, alluded to some of the KAa, : hjBBSBi hjr Jnl. Jv , supported by the Sentinel, which aimed to defeat the collection of the direct tux in this State, but later discoveries show tl.at those efforts were but the beginning an 1 rjugh outlines of a system which is now is complete and thoroughly prepared for its iniufernal work as it can be. By means which it is not necessary to disclose ii has beeu ascertained that a secret societtf has Ocen w yui.uJj ;.. cfiCi o..c. with the purpose of opposing the war arid defeating all attempts to sustain it by taxation. This Society has its oath?, passwords, signs and lodges, as any other secret society, and is undoubtedly an offshot of the "K. G. C." association, adapted to this latitude. It exists in this city, in Terre Haute, in Itockville, in Madison, and several other places. Its meetings are secret, and its lodge rooms are kept carefully concealed. Jts members in this city, and several others, are positively known, though it is not known that there may not be others connected wilh it than those who have been "spotted." The existence of the Society has been known for some time, but it has only been wfthin a abort time that appliances couid b brought to bear to procure a full exposure of the secrets. The meetings have beeu watched, and the participants marked, but their purpose conld only be conjectured. They have been tracked night after night through all their wanderings and concealments till all that could be learned outside has been made as familiar to the detectives as to the members themselves. But recently detection hns got inside, and we publish below the exposure it has made: "M. P. S." OBJECTS OF TUB OUDKE. 1. Opposition toithe Administration. 2. Opposition to the War Tax. 3. Opposition to taking up arms against the Southern Confederacy. 4. To defend each other, to death, if necessary. MODE Or INITIATING A CADET. The following questions are propounded to the candidates: Question Are you a Democrat or Republican ? Answer I am a Democrat. (If he is a Republican, he takes an oath that he will no longer vote or act with that party.) Question Are you in favor of supporting the war? Answer No. Question Are yoo opposed to the war tax? Answer I am. Question Will you pledge yourself, at the ri3k of life and property not to raise arms except to protect this organization? Answer I will. The oath is then administered, which is in substance as follows: Raising your right hand: I, , do solemnly swear that I will not divulge any of the secrets nor let be known any business or transaction that shall be done in this order that I will oppose the present Administration that I will not pay the war tax, nor take up arms to fight against the Southern Confederacy, and only in self-defense or this organization, which I pledge myself to do at the risk of life and property, and when I receive the sign from a brother I will answer. After taking the oatb, the candidate signs his name to the same, which is recorded in a book. MODE OF GETTING INTO A LODGE OR CASTLE. Give three raps on the door, when the door is opened and you say "M. P. S." You then enter tho Lodge or Castle and salute the presiding officer by drawing the right hand down from the mouib to the lower part of the chin. TO RECOON1ZB A MEMBER ON THE STREET. The sign of recognition is given by rubbing the right eye with the fore-finger of the right hand. Answered by rubbing the left eye with the second finger of the left hand. You then advance and shake bands.
The person giving the sign then says, if in the morning, "Mow is it this morning?" If ' in the middle of the day or afternoon, "How i-i it to-day." If in the evening, ' "How is it to-night?" Answer, "All is up.'' THE OFFICERS. President. Vice President. Chaplain. SIGNALS FOE CALLISO MEETINGS. I This is usually done by one separate la,., attended by four other taps, on come bell, on a court housevor engine hou?e. These organizations now exist in Madison, Evansville, Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Rockville, Sullivan, Vincennes, Green castle, lod., and Paris and Ma:toon, Illinois, which we know of. It is necessary to state that the initials pretendingly stand for "Mutual Protection," but their true meaning can be seen from the exposition Does not this exposition let in a little light on the sudden and fierce opposition made Igr certain papers in this Stale to the
payment of a direct tax by an arrangement with the Government which would avoid the necessity of adding to the State's burthen of taxation this year ? They denounced such an arrangement as shamelul, dishonorable and mischievous. And so it was, to them and their plans. It deprived them of the opportunity of using the probable discontent of portions of the State with the tax, as a means of increasing and consolidating the power of their treasonable organization. No tax to pay, no grumbling and cursing out of which these secret nests of treason could hatch fresh trouble t No wonder that those who had organized a secret society to embarrass the Government and assist the rebellion by defeating the tax, felt bad when they found that there might be no tax to pay, and no grist for the treason mill. But still the society exists, aud is adding numbers every day. We leave the public to pass judgment on this "secret,'- " oath-bonnd," "midnight" society rtnd is aims, with the remark that ' Know-Nothingism " has got into strange hands, and is doing a strange work.
