MORNING EEPORT. ——— Contradictory "specials" — England going to declare war, and she ain't—Lord
Lyons called on Mr. Seward and he didn't Stuff upon which American people are fed. SPECIAL TO TE1BCXB. Washington, Dec. 19 At 1 o'clock Lord Lyons called on the Secretary of State who was at the capitol. He called again at 3 o clock. The communication which he made is as yet a secret. No cabinet meeting bas been held on the subject. The general feeling of the city is less war-like than at first, and the people talk coolly of snrrendering the emissaries if it can be done without a sacrifice of honor rather than engage at this time in a foreign war. Tl.e report that members of the Cabinet take , simi i c . . . , id Sri- f tSu-,tl0.?.gftln! t6f!,!f-ulIe Ul3.Di currency a true that such conclusion has been arr ived at in Cabinet meeting on the one hand, itjis untrue on the other hand that not to surrender under any circumstances or for any consideration has been absolutely resolved on. vvniie ihe Crovernment will do noth iog to provoke hostilities, it will gnard well the national honor. Should arbitration be proposed it may accept Should a suflScient consideration for the surrender of Mason and ahdell be offered, it may be made. A prominent member of the Government 6ta tea in conversation this evening that Lord Lyons would not demand his passports; mat Mason and alidell would not be given up ana iuai mere was no probability of war with England. Englishmen bere are ojnti leut of a war between the two counirur. This opinion, however, is based on no official communication, and while it estucs ouuir uupieusaru reeling it carries no weight, apveral Englishmen now serving in our army, amocg them Col. Haveloek and Capt. Steward, have, it is declared, signified their iatuutiun to resign should further complications ensue. In other cases extraordinary and painful evidences ot Hostility to our cause have been shown. The general feeling, how ever, appears to De a sincere regret at what they regard as the inevitable issue. Mr. Adams' dispatches bave little to say . i - . i m . i . . . toucuing me a rent, naviDg received no communication on the subject from the Brit ish (government In the case of the Nash ville he bad made representations, but had received no reply A letter dated London, Dec. 4th, received here, speaks of seeing a newly patented Cab on Jxtora street, with the British and rebel nags crossed on the pannel, and little seces sion nags for sale on the street At the Adelpbi Theatre, controled by Dion Bourcicault, where the Octoroon was playing, the Stars and Stripes, which had floated there, were wrapped around and the stars and bare displayed. The Government has intelligence from Manassas, to-day, that still more tropps had arrived mere trora the South. Jeff. Davis, anticipating an attack, is adding every avail able man to Beauregard and Johnson's army. The report that a Maryland regiment has beei captured on the Potomac, grew out of the fact that a Captain and 13 men were the other day taken prisoners on the Upper Potomac. HEBALC S DISPATCH. Washisotox, Dec. 19. An absurd rumor was circulated to-day, that 'the government had decided last evening to surrender Mason and Slidell. It is without any foundation whatever. Up to 11 o'clock to-night, Lord Lyons bad made. io communication from bis government t the President or Secretary of State, relative to the seizure of the traitors Mason and Slidell. Mr. Adams, in his communication to Mr. Seward, gives a clear and detailed idea of the feeling of the British people, and the sentiments of the British statesmen, but does not indicate that be knows the purport of the instructions of the English government to Lord Lyons. Nothing contained iu Mr. Adams dispatches indicate that the goverument will make any exhorbitant demand relative to the seizure of the traitors. This is not only true, but I am permitted to announce by hi.?h official authority, itt private letters received from distinguished British statesmen assert that the British government will not demand the release of Mason and Slide!!, but will require such reparation as the U. S. can honorably grant. This is also confirmed by other private corresiiondence of Americans in London, who have facilities for learning the intentions of the Un'ssh government. From the Indianapolis Journal. Our LaU Victory In Western Virginia. Col. Kimball, of the 14th Indiana regiment, arrived in this city on Tuesday night, on his way home from Western Virginia. He left Phillippa, the headquarters of Gen. Reynolds, and of his own regiment, on Sunday, and brings the first full and authentic account of the late battle between our troops under Milroy, and the rebels under Johnson, that h is reached us. He was not present, but from the official report of Gen. Milrof, and ibe statements of officers engaged in the battle, has learned enough to give us a (ear idea of its plan and result. The euemy were posted in an entrenched position, uear Yager's farm, about eleven miles directly east of the camp at Greenbriar, where General Reynolds defeated them last October, and where, by the way, as our men have learned beyond all question, by the graves found in the camp, and from the reports of prisoners, we killed fully five hundred, and inflicted a total loss of about one thousand, in spite of the reports to the contrary. After the retreat of the enmy from that position, the main body scattered, probably joining other divisions, leaving about two thousand men at this Yager camp, to hold our forces in check. Here they had entrenched themselves strong- I ly, and undoubtedly expected to stay all the winter. These entrenchments consisted of ' four lines of earth works and ditches, placed i at various distances between each other, so as to afford four successive lines of defense. The attack was left entirely in the hands of Gen. Milroy, who commanded the brigade at that point, and he selected for it the 9th and 13th Indiana regiments, and portions of one Ohio and the 2d Virginia regiments. ; The column marched on the night of the 13th, so as to reach the enemy and begin the fight at 6 o'clock on the morn-
I lag al the 13tb. A battalion of the I 9th regiment, under Colonel Moody, was j ordered to make a detour to the eueI my's left, so as to reach and attack i them in the flank at the rime time ! that General Milroy attacked them in front,
Owing to the darkness, and the wretched mountain paths, or no paths, through which this division had to pass, it failed to arrive at the time, and Milroy, expecting it every moment and eager for a fight, began the attack without it. The battle was warm, aud doubtful. Our force was unprotected, the enemy were entrenched, and at least two to our one. Once there were signs of wavering, and portions of some of the regiments fell into disorder. In the nick of time Maj. Dobbs of the 13tb, came up with a portion of that regiment which had been left behind, and restored the fight. A little after 8 o'clock, Col. Moody, with bis division came up, and joined the attackingcolumn, and then our men began the work of cleaning out the entrenchments in earnest. One after the other of the four lines of breast Works and ditches was carried, the enemy rallying in the next one behind as fast as I the one in front was stormed, so that our tuu wuo iu nun n a." oiuiuicu, tuts. vu( I troops had to make four separate and bard fights of it before they cleared the field. Ac last, at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, after a scattering but bloody battle lasting all day, our men drove the enemy from tha last earthwork, and were masters of the position. In the last ditch young Joseph Gordon was killed, after having fought with extraordinary gallantry all day, and killed five of the enemy. He was shot through the bead and died instantly. A little earlier in the fight, Capt. Madden of the 9th was killed, but how we do not know. After driving the enemy from the entrenchments winch protected their camp, our troops retired, it being then dark, and slept on the field, to renew the fight next morning. But the enemy had had enough of it. Our scouts, as soon as it was light, saw that the redoubtable chivalry had burned everything that couldn't be carried off and would burn, and had retreated nobody knew where. Col. Kimball is satisfied that the rebel force is utterly disorganized, and that five bundied men cannot be found together any where in Western Virginia. We lost thirty men killed, and rather more than that number wounded. Of the enemy over 150 dead bodies were found in the entrenchments by our men before Oolonel Kimball left. Among them was that of a Colonel, supposed to be Col. Jennison's, who commanded. On Saturday night a party of Col. Kimball's scouts brought iu nine prisoners, among whom was the noted Colonel Stern, or Sterm, who has been one of the most active leaders of the guerilla bands ia that country. Two Colenels, and probably five hundred men killed and wounded, with thirty prisoners, make np a very handsome victory, and the enemy coufess it by burning up their camp and scattering in every way. We lost nine prisoners, of the 9th regiment, by their headlong disposition to get ahead of the rest of the regiment. Our total loss, we suppose, is about seventy, in killed, wonnded and prisoners. Col. Kimball states that rebel deserters are constantly coming into camp, sometimes singly, sometimes in squads of fonr or five, begging protection, and permission to enliat in our army. They represent themselves as having been shamefully used by the rebels, and more than glad to escape. The enemy may now be considered expelled from Western Virginia, and it is doubtful if they will again attempt to invade it. General Reynolds, without any fuss or parade of strategy or courage, ba succeeded admirably ia his command, and we believe be is to day a better man than four-fifths of those who sport more stars than be does. It was reported, as Colonel Kimball left, that Gen. Reynolds had been ordered to Romney to relieve General Kelley, and it was thought probable that our Indiana for ces would accompany him. If tbey do they may bave a chance at a little bigger game than the Cheat Mountains have given them. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. fire iraiii CO., HARTFORD, CONN .
