Before leaving St. Louis this raorning, the Secretary ot War, by letter, ordered General Fremont to discontinue as unnecessary, his field works around that city and that be is erecting at Jefferson City, to suspend work on the barracks he is building near bis residence, and discharge his body guard of 300 cavalry, and ordered him to employ all the money in the hands of the disbursing officers to tue payment of the current expenses of his army in Missouri, aad to let all his debts in St. Louis, amounting to $4,500,000 remain unpaid until they can be exanined and sent to Washington for settlement. He also ordered that the disbursing officer should disburse their funds and not. to transfer them into the bands of irresponsible persons, wbo do not bold commissions from the President, and are not under bonds ; and he further ordered that . 77 ' . nerearter an contracts necessarv to ne maae, . ... . .... he made by tne regular disnursiug crlicer ot tbe arm v. General Fremont was also in- ! rormed that payments would not, lu nxttde by oftir'ers appointed by him. it )S said there are 200 of them whose commissions do not bear the Presidents signature, and that Paymaster Andrews had been verbally instructed not to make such payments. Special exceptions were msde in tavor of officers of volunteers. The number of Forts planned by tTeneral Fremont for thr defense of St. Louis is eleven. An intelligent contraband who i-anie into General McCatl's camp this morning reports that when he left Fairfax O. H. yesterday at 2 P. M , no movement of the rebels was on foot. Tbe rebel troops were destitute of nearly everything except trr-sh beef. They bad plenty of blankets but nearly destitute of shoA. Tbey were tearing up railroad tracks at Vienna and hau'ing them to Fairfax. Should there be a battle tomorrow no sufficient accommodation could be had for the wounded At pieeent tbe i hospitals were filled with sick soldiers. FROM ROLL A. KotLA, Mo., Oct 14. The report brought here a day or two ago, that a battle took place on the 27th ultimo, between a body of Kansas troops under Montgomery and Jeooison, and the advance guard of Mc-
i Cnlloch's army and some State Guards un der Judge Ohenanlt, ts confirmed by parties just from Springfield. The battle com l saenced near Shanghai, in Barton county, f . L I l . . 1 -., and the rebels were driven back with con I siderable loss, and pursued some 40 miles. Montgomery then fell back on Greenfield. Great alarm was feU in Springfield, lest Montgomery should attack that place, and . (he troops there bad rested on their arms for several nights, Montgomery is said to have had 3000 men and the rebels 2400.- -This statement can hardly be relied upon, as we have had no previous advices that such a force of Kansas - -1 u that vicinity. A band of 300 marauding z . encamped at Wilson's Mili, on Bryant s Fork of White river, in Douglas county, were attacked some days since, by a body or Some Guards, and 15 of them killed and 20 wounded. It is reported her that the 13ih Uiinoii Regiment had surprised and taken Lebanon, in Laclede county, with all the stores provisions of the rebels, but Ibis needs conSrmstion. FROM BALTIMORE. Baliimobi, Oct. 15. Tbe Norfolk Examiner of Monday, which has been received by a flag of truce, contains a dispatch dated New Orleans, 12th, stating that a naval engagement had taken place at tbe head of the ............ on the night of the 11th, lasting an hour and was afterwards renewed, also the following dispatch. Jacksos, Oct. 1?. Last night I attacked the blockades with my little fleet. I succeeded after a very short struggle, in driving them all aground on the south-west pass bar, except tbe Preble, which I sunk. I captured a prize from tbeea and after they were fast in the sand I peppered them well. There were no causalities on our side. It was a complete encces?. Sig.ed, Houiss. Nbw Obxians, Oct. 12. The force of the federal fleet was 40 guns and nearly 1,000 men, while the little confederate umsquito fleet was 16 guns and 300 men.
