Let tbe good work go on. Oar ladies sbonld not spend one hour in idleness until tbe waata of our suffering troops are supplied. ———<>——— ——>There has been a tremendous rise in the upper Mississippi, caused by the heavitest rains ever experienced in that country. In one night eight inches of rain fell on a level place, not to speak of what sank into the ground. Throughout the whole county, the farmers were greatly distressed by the wet weather. There had been so much rain that they could not thresh, and the wheat was growing in the stacks. The kind of rain spoken of fell all of last week, with the exception of only one day. The river rose so rapidly that in many eases farmers lots [sic] their stocks, and crops and barely escaped with their lives. The whole country is flooded and the river was still rising at last accounts. The destruction of property will be very great. ———<>——— A ClSTtY REBbXUOH TO HOLDEE3 OF Slavs Property is Missoub. A Leavenworth paper says it has information, to the effect that one hundred slaves leave Missouri every day for ilaaaas. At this rate, should this rebellion bold on for a year or so, it will need no emancipation proclamation to make Missomi a free State. In fau, her "manifest destiny" is already clearly foreshadowed. So much for secession in Missouri, gSF VVe are in termed by Lieut. Col. Hoiiingswortb, tbat nine con panics of the 3d regiment ot tbe Indiana Legion bave been organized in this city. We have only published the officers of seven companies? and we would be ghsd to receive tbe name snrl officers of the new companies. It is u.atttr of congratulation to all good citinns that we have now a fully armed regiment, capable of defending the city against any forra likely to be brought against it. Kew England Corrttponjtne. NEWFcsTy Oc;. Stb, 1861. Euitbrs JSjjjcB This beautiful cltj by the sea, which has becotfae one of the most celebrated waterlog places in the country, bas not received its uacal number of
visitors daring the past season. The hotel- ! keepers nave all done a losing hosineee. The proprietor of tbe Ocean House, I am told, has lost six thousand dollars, and the Atlantic, Belvue and Fillmore have all lost money. There are about one hundred residences owned by wealthy gentlemen from variou? sections of the country which they have occupied during the past three or four months, and an equal number have been rented for the summer by owners residing here. Considering the state of the country, I have found here a much larger number of pleasure-seekers than I expected. Those who beheld tbe splendid carriages, drawn by elegantly caparisoned steeds, that, in scores, were driven through tbe streets in July and August, would not conclude that tbe war bad occasioned much suffering or sorrow here. In fact, Newport seems to have suffered less than any other cit, n the Union. The removal of the naval school from Annapolis to thin point has rompt uueated tbe people for the loss of Southern travel with which the city has usually been favored. Tbe old war frigate Constitution lies in this beautiful harbor and during the past summer she has been visited by thousands of patriotic men and women, who have gazed with admiration upon a vessel that achieved such glorious naval victories. The Atlantic House has been rented for the use of tbe officers and pupils of the school during tbe winter, and it present; a finer appearance than when occupied as a hotel nearly every room in the spacious building being brilliantly lighted with gas. Tbe citizens bave taken fifty thousand dollars of tbe National Loan, in sums ranging from fifty to ten thousand dollars. Cue of tbe wealthiest men in the city bas one son who is an officer in the rebel, while another is an officer in the federal, army, t 'fe and mother has a husband and four eou . bo have gone firth to defend the best governuteui upon the lace of theeartb. As I stood, recently, upon the Southern shore of this beautiful island, which has been called "tbe lovliest gem in the ocean's bosom," and gated ont upon the pathless deep, I thought of this darkest day in oar history as a nation, and asked if the time should ever come when the rebel rattlesnake flag of a mushroom, cotton confederacy should float at the mast head of vessels failing upon that highway of nations. No, no; it cannot, it shall not be! is the response of every true and loyal American. Our ship, They dip tbelr keels ta it try !ee that swells beneath be sky, And where'er ola ocean's billows roll their lofty pionon fly. And that star-spangled banner that has been known and booored thronehout tbe world ni" : fl"at over them In every breeze an-, liii whole heaven, dTam A a sign of bops and triumph high." Since ! last wrote you, Bboua Island and Massachusetts have been doing nobly in raising men and means to carry on a war, which has been forced upon us by ambitious, disloyal and designing men in the South. Yon, ot the West, have bad some reason to complain of New England, and with tbe exception of the two States above mentioned, she has not yet come up to her duty in th way of enlisting and sending her regiments into the field. We are sorry to learn that some of your papers are becoming restless and impatient at the tardy movements of these Eastern States. One of the Chicago papers is exceedingly bitter upon this point, and a Western lady writing to ber friends iu the East, says, "that you Indiana people are compelled to let patience bave ber perfect work, and are thinking tbat the Hoosier State is having more than ber share of the War, whicii she had so little to do with exalting. While Eastern people are having State fairs and amusements, and making money as usual, tbe war is coming nearer and nearer to us.While they must needs call for men from Iowa to fight in the East, we hare gcaa-ely enough men left to d eland ou' homes. We are thinking if yon cannot raise troops enough in the East to defend Washington, yon bad better surrender." I do not wonder that your ladies should be a Utile out of humor, for our papers tell us that in Washington village, only fifty miles from your city, all the unmarried men but one bave enlisted in the regiments tbat have left your State. s 'eft "Like the last rose of sunmier to tsioom all alone. No man of his kindred, no bachelor nigh To reflect back bis blushc- or give sigh for jb.' But be patient, dear friends in the broad and fertile West. New England is slow but sure in her movements. Her sons do not move with the energy and impulse that characterizes your Western men ; but; as in the Revolution of ' 7C, for seven long years she poured out freely of her blood and treasure, so now, in crashing this mighty rebellion, sue will yet be true to her revolutionary memory. The Governors of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Connecticut are old, cautious, and considerate men; and it may be that they are not f uily alive to the great interests at stake in ths contest, in which we are engaged. While the people of "hese States are quietlv pursuing their agricultural pursuits, duelling securely in mountain homes and in fertile valleys, they tlo net realise that unless we conquer tbe South, they will conquer us, and a Southern slaveholder will make. his boasting true by calling tbe roll nf his slaves upon Bunker Bill. " aid that all Northern men, in public and i-r life, would imitate the example of Rhotit i3iaiiJ'a youthfo! Governor! Last Saturday 1 saw him riding at tbe head of the noble regiment that in a few days had been gathered from every county iu this little State, and were now ready to go forth in defense of the nation. He made them frequent visits while they were at Gamp Greene, doing everything in bis power to promote their comfort. His energy and liberality are winning golden opinions from all patriotic men. A few weeks ago, he learned tbat the rebels in Virginia had con fiscated the property of tsen. Mcott, ana knowing the circumstances of the old hero, be sent him a cceca, mr uuc luuuaauu miliars, the amount of his salary for one year.
