Palmer, D. D., is a pri ate in the ranks of the Confederate Guard9, New Orleans. fiT" Senator Chandler, of Michigan, says that if Winans, the Baltimore rebel, is not hung, he will resign his seat ia Congress. Jggy-The Charleston Courier saya the HI bernian Society of that city has stricken the name of Thoina3 Francis Meagher from its list of honorary members. The Courier thinks Mr. Meagher's efforts are mistaken and will do his adopted country no more service than he achieved for his native land. Mails Suspended. The Postmaster Gen eral, on Tuesday last, annulled the mail con tract between St. Louis and Memphis. This was owing to the forcible stoppage of steam boats which conveyed them. Why it is the Government does not cut off all the mails South is a mystery to as, when it cannot but be aware that letters are opened and examined constantly. Drop Letters, under tho regulations of the Department, have heretofore been de, livered through the Post Office whether prepaid or not. A late law requires that they shall in all cases be prepaid by pottage stamps, the same as other letters. This fact should be borne in mind, as unless such letters are prepaid they can not be delivered under the regulations of the Department. Many of the Pensacola correspondents express grave doubts as to the fidelity of Capt. Adams, of the frigate Sabine, and commander of the Naval forces off Fort Piekens. He has been holdiog secret communication with the rebels which does look a little Out of place to say the least of it. When a commander tells his opponents he sympathizes with them in their course, be certainly will bear watching. t20n a letter which passed through the Post Office here on Wednesday, was written the following forcible couplet, in irnmitation of " Lochiel's warning." There is both truth and poetry in this effusion. : "Jeff Davis, Jet!" Davis, bewuro of the day, When you meet Indiana ia battle array." This warning was written, doubtless, by one of our " bould soldier boys," who JEST" Several individuals who were subjected to all kinds of insults in Memphis, because they would not enlist in the ranks of the rebels, arrived in our city yesterday cn their way up the river. The agent of the Charley Boweu made arrangements for their passage to Louisville, but when he came to hunt them up, he found all the able-bodied men had volunteered for three years service in Capt. llanna's company. The boy3 are anxious to return to Memphis. CSf We publish, in another column, an article from the Madison Courier, because, while there is a great deal in it that is objectionable, especially in spirit, there are maDy things that are true. Southern Indiana has had but little attention paid to her wants or wishes. She ha3 been compelled to "go it alone." As the Courier justly remarks, the cannon ordered by Gov. Morton to be made in Cincinnati, could have been done in this State just as well as not. Our mechanics have manufactured two guns for the use of the city, and we challenge any shops to turn out better ones. One of them was tried yesterday, and did finely. The rifled cannon will be tried Saturday. Probably the Governor is not aware of the capacity of our machine shops, but it would have been an easy matter for him to inquire. Ax Octeage o.v Commerce. The other day our excellent and union-loving fellowcitizen, Laird Olmsted, was piloting a raft of saw logs up Pigeon Creek to his saw mill when, in passing Camp Morris, he was so unfortunate as to attract the attention of some of the boys, who, just then, appeared to be detailed on the special duty of enforcing the embargo laws. These zealous, improvised government officials, hailed the raft and enquired of Capt. Olmsted, whether he had any provisions on board for the Confederate States. On being answered in the negative, they next enquired if any munitions of war; then if any arms. Both questions being promptly answered in the negative, one of the interrogators declared the raft was a suspicious looking craft, and he did not think they could perform their duty as government officers without boarding her. Accordingly, having no boat at hand, several of the B'hoys jumped into the creek, swam out and "over-hauled" ber. Having satisfied themselves by inspection that there was nothing contraband aboard, tbey then requested the Captain to show his colors, which he respectfully declined doing on the ground that it was not customary for rafts to carry the article. At leDgth, becoming convinced of the loyalty of Capt. Olmeted, they dismissed him with a caution never again to sail a suspicious craft in that neighborhood without carrying the stars and stripes for hia protection.
Smoked Out. The St. Louis Republican,
haviDg carefully studied the actions of the Virginia secessionists, has been attempting to repeat them in Missouri. Having the i eyes of shrewd men upon it, the attempt was a miserable failure, and has been un masked. Nominally a Union paper, it has been indirectly doing all it could to advance the secession cause, and one of its principal proprietors was an officer in Camp Jackson at the time it was so handsomely captured. So great was his chagrin at the inglorious termination of his first military adventure, that the doughty officer ruined a fine sword over a fence post. Upon being released on pa role, he found, on returning to the office, tb&t three of his compositors bad assisted in his capture, being members of a company of the Home Guards in Col. McNeal's regiment. Of course here was a fine opportunity to wreak vengeance. What business had these poor patriotic compositors to volunteer under the Stars and Stripes when their aristocratic employer was found under the folds of the rattle-snake, and parading up and down Davis and Beauregard avenues t It would never do, and the poor compositors were set adrift in a jiffy. Now, if a proprietor of the Republican was an active officer in General Frost's brig ade, that paper could not be ignorant of the facts already published : That Gov. Jack son was in constant communication with the rebels at Montgomery; that he had an agent there to procure arms ; that the efforts of the agent were crowned with suc cess ; that small arms, cannon, munitions of war of all kinds, were smuggled into St. Louis in crates of ware and sugar bogsbeads; that secessionism was openly proclaimed in Camp Jackson, and threats repeatedly made of capturing the United States arsenal. Knowing all these facts the Republican, in attempting t6 maintain that the capture of the camp was not both right and expedient, evidently shows that it regards its readers as unmitigated fools. A careful investigation of the facts in connection with the St. Louis difficulties! must convince every candid mind of the following: 1. Camp Jackson was organized for the purpose of intimidating the Union men in the city and the ultimate seizure of the St. Louis arsenal. 2. The movement of Capt. Lyon was a master stroke of policy, by anticipating the secessionists. 3. Infuriated by the failure of their cherished plans, themob attacked the troop3( in their phrenzy, and provoked the firing which caused such destruction of life. 4. The soldiers acted like untrained militia, and failed to exercise that forbearance which tbey should have done under all circumstances. The Republican has awoke to a realization of the State's position as the following paragraph in Wednesday's paper clearly shows : The State of Missouri is so enfiladed and controlled by the military forces levied by the United States Government, that it would be worse than madness to think of opposing them wivjicirtru"s6ive3 bound to say by way of caution to the people of Missouri. Had 'Em Thbrb. A runner connected with one of our large jobbing houses whose proprietors are Hebrews, was recently sent into Arkansas to look after some claims. While absent it became necessary to write home and that the letter should not be stopped on the way. So he set down and wrote a letter the principal part of which consisted of a glorification of the Southern people, expatiated largely on the beauties of secession, and denounced the abolition President in no stinted terms. Having fixed that part up all right, he added, just below his name, in Hebrew characters, " this is all a lie." It need hardly be said the letter came through all right though bearing evidence that it had been opened on the way. Thb Virginians are becoming great ly alarmed, and the papers are making piteous appeals to Jeff. Davis for his immediate presence in Virginia. The Dispatch says it is not to be denied that their people were not ready for the fight ; that they are not fully provided with the munitions of war and the appointments of an army ; and, what is much more important, are without well digested military organizations. The work of organization has had to be perfected exclusively by civilians. What is more than all this, President Lincoln has agents in Richmond, who transmit to him daily, information of the state of things there. The same paper thinks all the letters that go through the P. O. should be opened. m i f . i . x oe oouiuerners maue a great tuss over the fact that President Davis was going to take the field in person. It seemi he has not done so as quick as President Lincoln, who went down the Potomao the other day on a tour of inspection. Contraband or War. The Indianapolis Journal of Wednesday says ; The Vigi lance Committee, on Saturday night, seized at the Jeffersonviile depot 8 barrels of crackers, 200 muskets, 30,000 ball cart, ridges, 60,000 percussion caps, and six railroad cars destined for points south of the Ohio river. The Committee have, for several days past, inspected a number of other articles before permitting them to pass. They are determined to stop all articles contraband of war.' JESF" There will be an auction of new furniture at Armstrong's Furniture Wareroom No. 91 M ain Street, at 9 o'clock to-morrow morning, by H. Nelson &, Co. They will sell some fine sofa chairs, fine rockers, caneseat chairs, a fine extension table, tables of all kinds, some fine gilt mirrors, fine bedsteads, and a general variety of new and good furniture without reserve. The ladies are invited.
Slay In a notice of a Tisit to "Camp Vigo," at Terre Haute, the Local of the Express thus speaks of Capt. Thompson's com-
pany : Drilling is going on briskly, and already some of the companies have attained considerable efficiency. The Crescent City Guard we notice particularly as having almost the bearing of old soldiers. The number of the regiment is the four teenth. figf The Danville (Ky.) Tribune says that among the votes cast for the Union ticket ia Boyle countv, was that of Mr. John Spears, Jr., one of the few surviving soldiers I r. V... i i i, .:,v, ui tuo ncvuxuuuu wuu reumtua hj surprise and sorrow upon the madness of the people who wish to tear down the proua temple of liberty for which the Revolution, with its hardships and bloodshed, was fought. Mr. Spears was present in .the ranks at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. He is now 94 years old, and a hale, hearty old patriot. We have before mentioned that out of nine hundred Charleston volunteers six hundred have refused to leave the State. The " Sumter Guards," of the same city, show an equal want of pluck, though they arrogate to themselves the name of "Game Cocks." Their Captain has resigned, and at last accounts his place had gone a begging, for no one could be found willing to fill it. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. ftojz, oil,.
