The Daily Journal. EVANSVILLE, IND. WEDNESDAY MORNING............ APRIL 24 =======
Are We Prepared 1 Events of vast importance are hurrying upon the Nation in rapid succession. "War in all its terror is npon- us. Traitors have planned the overthrow of the Government, and they have succeeded in dragging almost the whole South into the vortex of disunion. It is too late to discuss the causes. Patriots have lost sight of politics, nd, in the North, hare rallied as one manf to support and maintain the Government. How long or how bloody will be the war we know not. But it is upon us, and it becomes us as prudent men to look the danger full in the face, and prepare for tbe worst. "We do not wish to become alarmists or to awaken undue fears in our community ; but the question is often asked, are we doing all we should, for our own peace and good order as a city ? In these times of stirring events and wild excitement, there may be dangers at homeDesperate characters and designing men 11 12 13 14 15 16 are always ready to take advantage of troubles such as the present to disturb the quiet and safety of citizens and proper ty. And while we are as yet on amicabi8 terms with our neighbors in Kentucky, and desire earnestly that we may have no cause of quarrel with that State, stilt the condi tion of the country makes it the imperative duty of citizens to take all prudent meaa ures for the safety of our own homes. Ken tucky may prove true to the Union, and tbus win lor nerseit an immortal place in . the nation ; but we must not forget that Virginia is in arms against tbe government; that r Tennessee ha3 forgotten her late pledges of patriotism ; that Maryland bas fired npon the flag of our country ; and that it is not impossible that even Kentucky in these time3 of anarchy and treason may lose sight of her duty. We may be upon the harder, and it i3 well for us to b prepared for the worst, while we do all we can to arrtst such tin event. Our. voluuteer companies are thoroughly j organizing, and, as a prudential measnrofor the safety of our homes, they should be armed and equipped for our defense. Wa are informed by gentleineu just from the Capital, that tbe State is unable to furnish tlieiu wifli arms. There is but one other rSnrse to pursue, an J that speedily. Delay i.) dangerous. Let us do as all the border Cities ure doing. Do a3 our sister town of Mt. Vernon has so wisely done. Let tbe city, the county, and th'ri citizens come up to tha woi'k. W learn that the County Commissioners are convened for to-day "to take aotioii on the subject. They should not hesitate to appropriate at least five thousand dollars. The city should do as much, if her resources will allow. The Hanks, the property holders, and all our c itizens should respond with a willing and lilteral hand. We must sustain the Govi unit'iit or our property is worthless. We must protect our homes, or onr. wives and our children may be in danger. W have already lost more than a week of preparation. Let us not lose another day. Let action be taken' to-day. Tlit, News. The dispatches this morning indicate that Baltimore is still nnder a reign of terror. Mobooraey in ita worst form prevails. But the despatches that the Catholic Cathedral was burned can hardly be credited. The Secessionists are hardly so insane as to add the crime of sacrilege to that of treason.' It is reported that the city had been shelled. Whether this is so or not, the country is getting to feel, as tbe New York Herald says, " that another ruffianly or revolutionary demonstration or two ought to result in the reduction of the city to the condition of Fort Sumter." Tbe negroes of Maryland are getting to hear of the war, and are taking advantage of it. St. Louis is furnishing troops for the war. Public sentiment wields a mighty power. It has opened the eyes of Caleb Cushing. He says he has gone to Massachusetts to join a regiment for the defense of tbe Union. The traitors are adding another crime to their ignominy. They have turned pirates and are preying npon our commerce. There is but one pupisbmcnt for pirates, and the last of them will soon be swung from the yard arm. The news from Norfolk indicates a serious loss to our naval force. The Merrimac was one of the finest vessels of the UnaWe may expect these reverses at the outset ef tbe fight, but in a few days when the power of tbe North begins to be felt, the Southern traitors will quail before its avenging strength. The Mayor of Baltimore has had a conference with the President relative to the passage of troops through Maryland.." Gen. Scott's mode is the best, peaceably if we can, forcibly if we must." The uprising of the North is such as the South nt-ver anticipated. While the men by hundreds of thousands are ready to march to the defense of the government, patriotic women are ready to accompany them to bind up their wounds, as will be seen by the Philadelphia despatch. E62rThe Commissioners of Spencer county have been convened for to-day to make an appropriation for arming the county and for general defense. It is stated tbey will most probably appropriate five ihoutami dollars for tliat pur)ose, and the citizens stand ready to respond in any further amount which may be needed. This is the right spirit. Will Old Vanderburgh be outdone by Spencer county ? We trust not. In this hour of war, anarchy, and monocracy, let us be prepared to defend our homes and our property.

Governor Magoffim of Kentucky, an avowed sympathizer with the traitors, under the guise of arming tbe State for self-defenac, is seeking to prepare it tor resistance to the government. But a thing as necessary as the munitions of war is the money with which to purchase them, and this the Governor has not. lie applied to tbe Bunks for a loan, which they were unwilling to give, if it was to be used to sustain the disunionists. The Govenor and bis party are quite indignant that Bank officers should annex a political condition to the State loan. We infer from the Louisville papers of yesterday morning that no arrangement has as yet been made with the Banks. A fter the Governor satisfies the Banks, another difficulty will present itself to his Excellency. After he gets the money, he will find it hard to purchase arms in the North! The demand is very great at home for the munitions of war, and we apprehend onr own wants wi'-l be supplied first. It will be asked of the Governor to what use be proposes to put tbe arms, before they are furnished by northern manufactories. We hope there are enough patriots in Kentucky to prevent the State from being arrayed against the government, but if : there are not, they will have to manufacture their own arms or find them in some other quarter than northern manufactories. Jta? We eall tbe attention of tbe Farming community to an article in to-day's paper, beaded Morgan Horses as Roadsters, as it shows np this fine-Blood in its true light, nd should be read by all interested in the improvement of Horses, &c. There is no doubt but this is tbe best Blood in the United States. One of these truly noble ani- ' is owned in our city by the Morgan Horse Company, and kept by Thomas Bower at his stable, 10 miles from the city, on the road leading from KranevilietoOwenaville. Call and see this fine Horse, as be is a fae simiU of his Great-Grand-Father, Justin Morgan, of .Vermont. .: ; " Fobt Pickens. Tbe silence of the South ia reference to affairs at this place is ominous. The report in the Cincinnati Commercial of Monday that the '. fight bad commenced, is very probably true. The Secessionists have' command of the wires, and no messages have been made public for several days. , , If they bad gained the battle, we would have heard of it. The ia-t has been reinforced, and is in communication with tbe fleet off the harbor, and will be able to repulse a very large force if it should be attacked. Hon. James C. Vbach, of Rockport, was in the city last evening, on his way to the extra session of tbe Legislature. He' reports tbe people of Spencer County sound to the core for the Union. - One company of volunteers is organized and ready to march to the seat of war as soon as the Government will allow them, and other companies are being organized for home protection. The Pocket is a nnit in sustaining the Government and protecting tbe flag of our country from insult by traitors. JtSF" Tha ' following dispatch, sent ' on Saturday last, from Gen. Scott to John J. Crittenden, shows that the various rumors in reference to tbe old hero's disaffection were slanders upon bis patriotism : Washinotos, Apiil 20, 18G1. Hon. John J. Crittenden: I have not changed. I have not thooght of changing, Always a Union man. WixrniLn Scott. Tub Babuabiass or Baltimobb. The Philadelphia Bulletin bas the following: We have it upon the authority of Capt. E. W. rower, ot tne Buena Vista Guards, that when the diad body of a Philadelphia volunteer, who had been put iu a car by his comrades, the mob seized the corpse and kicked it about in the street until they actually kicked tha jaw off. ' Tha Express boys and Tom Ham again famished US with DWSpaper favors. ' Bully for thsni.'
