MONDAY MORNING...............APRIL 22 ======= Duty to the Government. It 13 the doty of all good citizens to sustain their Government. They owe it to themselves and families to do so, for the Government must be made strong enough to enforce its own laws, else there is no protection for life and property. The law of self-defense that great, first law of nature requires one to assist in strengthening the "powers that be," so they may in return be able to yield protection to those who look to them for it. . We like that toast of a brave old American commodore : "Our country mey she always be right ; but, our country, right or wrong." This is the only safe rule of action, for if we follow any other, every man sets himself up as a judge of the justice of any given measure, and ia this way there can be no unity of action. Impotency in the government and all its accompany iog ilia must be the result. We had befer have a strong government if it is a litt'e stringent, than a weak and powerless one. Before the Mexican war, many of the Whig party opposed it becaosethey thought it waa unjust toward a weak nation. But whin war was declared, the party, with a few individual exceptions, laid aside their objections to it, and many of it3 prominent men promptly volunteered nnd went to Mexico. There were probably as many Whigs a.9 Democrats in the army. .Party questions were laid aside, and Whigs forgot how the war was made, and that there was a Democratic President who called for their services. It was sufficient for them to know that the country was involved in war, and they cheerfully acknowledged their duty to help ber out of it. The country is now involved in war and engaged in putting down a formidable rebellion against the lawful authorities. It is the duty cf all good citizeLS to help the Government through. This, we are glad to see, is the disposition in the North amongst men of nil parties. The people of the North are generally sound on the question of maintaining the Union and sustaining the authorities. The enthusiastic and spontane ous military preparations going on prove this. Nothing so heartfelt and earnest bag been seen since the days of the Crusades. The men wha fail to support the government now, will see the d;y when they will feel like calling on the mountains to cover them and thus hide their shame from the reproaches or an indignant people. The public disfavor which has attended the Federalist3 who opposed the war of 1812 and were accused of giving aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war, is but a faint typn of the execration which will be heaped in future on those who now turn their backs on the government of their country. It is the political death of any Northern man to do so. , .' Stabbino Affair. On Saturday, as Capt. Thomas Ashby and Sile Weed were sitting together in Guvitt's Livery Stable, on Main street near the Canal, Capt. Ashby playfully pulled Weed's hat by the brim, and was told by W. to let it alone, as it was all he 1m l. A few words passed in apparent good humor on both sides, when Ashby again pulled Weed's hat playfully down upon hia head. Whereupon, Weed pulled out a pocket knife with a blade about five inches long and made a pass at Ashby, the weapon entering just below the right groin and striking the thigh bone. He struck again, and the blade entered the abdomen, a little above the left groin, the latter being a very painful, and it is feared fatal, wound. Captain Ashby was carried to Dr. John T. Walker's office and thence borne i in the south-eastern part of the city. - Weed gave himself up into the custody of Sheriff Gavitt, who was present, remarking, " I'm your prisoner." When asked why he made so unprovoked an attack, he intimated that he was induced to do it on account of some old grudge. Capt. Ashby remarked afterwards that he couldn't imagine why Weed stabbed him, for be thought he whs n good friend of his. Weed is now in jail. We have understood that liquor ws to blame as usual in this deplorable affair. Capt. Ashby is a well known river man, though now interested in a mercantile establishment on the Landing. He is a very popular man, and anything but quarrelsome. Weed i3 a painter. We refrain from speaking the common feeling on this subject, as it will come before court before long. Tun Cuesce.vt City Guards. This is the name settled on for Dr. Thompson's volun teer company. They met at their armory, in the third story of Klusman's building, on Saturday evening and organized.. The roll was opened for signatures on Saturday forenoon, and in four hours the company wn3 more than full. There are now one hundred and eighteen names on the roll. The oath was administered to them on Saturday evening, by John W. Foster, Esq., Notary Public. t Tlie election passed off harmoniously. Noah S. Thompson was elected Captain ; Nathan Willard, First Lieutenant; George O. Pope, Second Lieutenant ; J. C. Calhoun lliller, Third Lieutenant. The company 13 now, many of them, messing in their armory, and drilling actively. Saturday evening they were escorted around town by the Crescent City Band and a large procession of citizens. They are making their preparations to leave for their rendezvous at Indianapolis on Tuesday luoraing. The blessing of our people will go with them. The company is well officered, nnd will compare favorably with any nt Caaip .Morton. SiifWe "re again under obligations to the Adums Eipress boy, and to Tom Ham, for newspaper favors.
Indianapolis Correspondence. INDIANAPOLIS, April 19, 1861. <Editor Journal:>—My letter of the 15th
not baving appeared in your columns, I conclude it has in some way teced'J from the notice of the Post Office officials. Not distinctly remembering its purport, I am unable to say how much your readers have l03t. . . We are here almost ia the condition of a besieged city; or," perhaps, rather, in the condition of a city about to send out troop3 on active service. The easel are not very similar, but my military experience is small. The fact, however, that I would state is, that the mind of the whole community still continues wrapped up, to a very great degree, in the all-absorbing subject of the civil war, while the constant sound of martial music from the various recruiting stations, the frequent marching of companies through the streets, and the roar of cannon at the arrival of almost every train, offering its grim welcome to new companies arriving, keep this one subject before all minds, that we are just entering upon a campaign, the end of which none knowa when to anticipate, aad the results of which all admit are likely to be terribly bloody. There is little of gala-day enthusiasm manifested, but abundance of cool, firm determination, to meet the issue and abide the consequences. No troops have yet been ordered away from this point, and there are probably now 1,500 men here, in camp, and others constantly arriving. The new fair ground is used as the camp, and styled Camp Morton. The Governor's mil yesterday on the citizens for bidding (o n. oris nnd. blankets), for the soldiers, was liberally and promptly responded to, and to-day the ladies, under Mrs. Morton's generalship, are plying the ; J 1 - - , I X i I ueeu.u vum. hearty every one seen on the street has Ler bundle of red flannel taking it home to make uo." or taking back the manufactured article. So far Indiana ha3 responded promptly to the call of the Tresident. Doubtless she will be faithful to the end. The "Sixth Regiment," numbering in order from the Fifth of the Mexican War, is reported full, and will probably leave in a day or two. SCRIB Thk BOMB Guards. The Evans viile Home Guards (which title we use for want j of a better one), composed of substantial business meu of the city, of all parties, met Saturday night at Marble Hall, and organized. Dr. G. B. Walker was called to the Chair, and George Foster made Secretary. Eighty-nine names were enrolled. After various ballotings, Dr. John T. Walker was elected Captain Wm. E. .French, First Lieutenant;. Wm. Heilman, Second .Lieutenant; George Foster, Third Lieutenant; L'. G. Kmx, Orderly (or 1st) Sergeant ; D. C. Keller, 2d do. t W. H. Caldwell. 3rd do.; J. P. Elliott, 4th do.; O. R. Dement, 1st Corporal ; G. Maghee, 2d do.; G. Copeland, 3d do.; C. Baker, 4th do. George Foster was elected Treasurer. The officers were authorized to ascertain immediately the price of one hundred Sharpe's Rifles, and when tbey can be obtained, Twelve ! members were then detailed to act as city patrols on Saturday night, and twelve on Sunday night six in the early and six in the late part of the evening. Another meeting will be held at Marble Ball to-nigh I (Monday) at eight o'clock. Night Patrol. The Mayor on Saturday detailed twelve men from each of the organized home protection companies for the purpose of guarding the city oa Saturday night against depredators. Thr were over fifty armed patrols en guard oo that and 3unday evening. Th system o' patrols will be kept up so log as necessary, j Several instances havi occurred of lai where suspicious characters have gone into dwellings when no persons were there but i - women, and demanded food and searched drawers for plunder. This kind of business will have to be stopped or some of those who practice it will get hurt. Our citiaena are just in the proper state of mind to lead ihem to make short work of saeh casea. A drunken man found asleep on the steps of a house in the East part of town Saturday night wa3 taken t6 jail by two of the patrol. A few days hence Evansville will be. prepared for-anything that may come.' The movement is a general one. i - BS We are under obligations to Dr. Erie Locke, c hie t of the Agricultural Bureau of the Patent Office, for a copy of tbe Agricultural Report for 1859, and a package of seeds. The seeds consist of the following varieties: Fine Royal Dwarf Pea, Double Blossom Frame sPea, Vegetable Marrow, Red London Beet, . Yellow Globe Beet, Early Frame Radish, Dwarf Early Savoy Cabbage, Red Turnip Radish, Sweet Scabious, Fine Mixed Sweet Pea, Dwarf Scarlet Nastnrtion, Scarlet Mallow, Coriander, Angelica, Hardy Green Cos Lettuce, Caraway. These seeds are labeled as coming from France and England. Any of our subscribers who- wish to try some cf them will call soon. ;' Attestion. All those who desire to join a Light Artillery Battalion are invited to present themselves at the Armory, Union Hall (Klusman's new' 'building J, 'Nor 63 Main street. The arms will be furnished upon the enrollment of the requisite number. One com. pany have already reported. W. H. Chandler, Wm. Hodge, M. Milsch, W. E. hollingsworth, Carl Schmitt, E. C. Hastings. Armory on second floor. SayThe war excitement in Ttrre Haute is exceedingly great. That place has sent over two hundred volunteers to the rendezvous. Little else is going on than fitting ont men for the United States service. Every one of the adult employees of McNeely & , Defrees, barrel manufacturers, have volunteered and left town. JSaT" The teachers and pupils nt the Upper School-House are making arraugemen ts for raising a flag, thirty feel long, -on that building. Of course it will bj the StarSpangled Banner. " Long nuty it wave."
Excithmbnt ix Memphis. Mr. Jo.baa McDonald, well known here a the Clerk of tb Masonic Gem,; has returned here a that boat.. He-reports intense excitement at Memphis. About 1,000 men assembled
on Tuesday, April 16th, and compelled the ' Cuptain of the Messenger to haul down the ; ; Stars and Stripes. Mr. McDonald, who was . standing nearby, freely gave vent to his patriotic indignation at such treatment of I ..mi n twv, 'a (tan. n n 1 . . , immDliatalv r f uta viuuu J a ucfc, nun niM luiiutuiaivy uv- j tified to leave Memphis. He did so, of course, the warmest Union man imaginable, lie says business is entirely suspended in Memphis. t&" The Stars and Stripes were hoisted on the Evansville Jonrnal office on Saturday. Onr banner hangs on the outer wall, and our sentiments are expressed by its rippling colors, the flashing of its thirty-four stars, and the snapping of its thirteen stripes. The passing traveler on the Ohio can set it down that no recreant to the honor of the Union is to be found beneath its folds. Our flag is twenty-four feet long, and nine feet wide, and the thirty-four stars are arranged in the form of one large star. " E Pluribus Unum " yes, that is it ,: many in one.' So may it always be. ffcaT'Capt. Thompson's company will not go to rendezvous quite so soon as expee'ed, in consequence ct the requisition being full. Another will probably be made soon, according to the telegraph. If so, it will be " honored." Though we have a rule not to allow work about this ofRce on Sunday, the pnb- . . . anx;et , t t hear ear, of ,h ' 6 , thrilling events now transpiring, that we worked till past midnight last night to get the very latest dispatches. Tbey will be found in the proper place. A Patriotic Ladt. The women are all right for the Union. They don't want to see the " flag of beauty and of glory " trail in tha dust. A patriotic matron of this city, on learning ihat a movement was on foot to get up a Sharpe's Uifle Company, for home protection, remarked that her sex rendered it impossible for her to join, but she would buy a ride for eome one to carry ! fiia?Mr. Wm. H. Klusman has generously tendered the use of all the three stories of his spacious new building on Main street, just above Second, for the ue of the military companies of the city. Capt. Thompson's Volunteers and a new artillery company have accepted the offer. This is commendable in Mr. Klusman. Capt. Blytbe's new company of Ri flemen have adopted a uniform, to consist of grey jeans pants and roundabout, and cap of the same material. Tbey are a fine, large company. A drill meeting will be held at 4 p. u. to-day (Monday), and a business meeting to-night, at Crescent City Hall. The 'company's officers, it will "be remembered, are Capt. J as. E. Blythe, 1st Lieut, JaS. N. Shttnklin, 2d do. Robt. " Earley, 3d do. Victor Bisch. The Ukios Guards. This Company was organized in Lamasco, on Saturday nighty by the election of George Woiflin, Captain ; Joseph Overell, First Lieutenant ; John Emrich, Second Lieutenant; Robert Mether, Third Lieutenant; besides four Sergeants( four Corporals, and an Ensign. One hundred and thirty-sevea names were signed to the roll. One, twenty-seven feet long, was bought and paid" for by the teachers aud pupils of the Lower School House, and flung to the breeze on the building Saturday. : ' Tell City. This thriving new city has, we ar informed, offered seventy-five volunteers to the Governor, and have enrolled one hundred and twenty as a Home Guard. Ten patrols are employed every night to guard the place against depredations by any unprincipled poisons who may be disposed to take advantage of the present troubles to indulge iheir love of mischief and plunder. r. " JBSjF" The " ear-piercing fife and spiritstirring drum " was heard all day on Saturday at the armory of the Crescent City Guard3. Truly, " Grim viaaged war" is frowning upon our once happy country. We are under obligations to MrJames B.
