FRIDAY MORNING................APRIL 5 ======= ——>Mr. James Ferry favored us yesterday with a whole file of Cincinnati and Louisville papers. ———<>——— A MISERABLE ERROR.—The compositor in yesterday mornings's paper slaughtered the closing sentence of the leading article most unmercifully. The sentence should read "No! the Union is <sorely beset," &c>. instead of "not sorely best" as in the paper. ———<>——— Masters of "tHe Situation." The New Orleans Cre3eent is a gem aon newspapers. It ever glistens in unclouded rmgoifkence. Exarniae it when you may ns you may new beauties continually unfold themselves to astonish and charm the beholder. Its vivacity is nndying, and sparkles from every paragraph, column, and page. Even the advertisements seem to reflect the rays that glance from the flaming editorials. When wearied with the dull matter-of-t'act tone of a "great majority of our exchanges, we turn to the Crescent with an assurance of refreshment that is seldom deceived. The Crescent thinks the Black Republi cans are troubling themselves unnecccsrarily, and " es.ulls in the prospect of the ter ribly just whippiug Jeff. Davis would be stow on Abe Lincoln, should the two ever meet at the head of the armies of the two Confederacies." The Crescent is " spilin' for a inu3S." It dares anybody to knock a chip od' Jeff's shoulder, orcro33 a prescribed line. The Southern Confederacy have mastered " the situation," and our government had better emulate the discretion of Capt; Scott's coon, and " come down " at once. The Crescent sympathizes with the North on account of its fears in regard to the Southern forls. All is calm at the South because Down South, we have calmly, intelligently and industriously considered and weighed all the advantages and disadvantages of what the French call "the situation." Grasping the difficulties with a strong hand, and cooly calculating the chances, we have mastered "the situation." We are in a position to dictate terms, and whatever terras we dictaie the North will be compelled to submit to. We care nothing about the "possession of Key West and Tortngas." When we want them we shall get them. As for Forts Sumter and Pickens, they have been absolutely iu our power for weeks. They have been spared simply because the great, noble statesman nnd experienced soldier, who presides at the head of the Government of the Confederate States deems it wise to profit by delay. We have profited immensely by delay. Daily and hourly have the Confederate States been advantaged ; and now they present a spectacle such as the earth has never witnessed in any era of its history that of a people so completely armed, and possessing such means of destructiveness, that each man is well-nigh equivalent to a dozen ! How long this state of things will cmtinue we have no means of knowing ; but, from our knowledge of the character of President Davis, we feel authorized to assure the Abolitionists, that when he cannot reulize any more advantages by practicing a system of " masterly inactivity," that they had better prepare for the most tremendous war the records of the past bear witness to, or else submit humbly to the just and honorable terms that will be dictated to them. Ice in dog-days or a brandy " smash," imbibed through a long, clean straw are certainly not more refreshing than that! The cool impudence and bravado of the Crescent is absolutely invigorating ! " We are in a position to. dictate terms, and the North will be compelled to submit." "When we want Tortugas and Key West we shall get them." . " Each man is well nigh equivalent to a dozeu !'' Probably the Secessionists of New Orleans are masters of the situation down there, but we venture the prediction that when the Minnesota and other vessels arrive at their destination the mouth of the Mississippi the "situation" will be "grand, gloomy, and peculiar." Cincinnati Election. We' staled the other day that it was our impression when the vote of that city on Monday last was compared with the vote at the election in October preceding, it would be ascertained that the Republicans had very nearly held their own. The Cincinnati Commercial compares the votewhich proves our impressions to have been correct. The Republicans are beaten this Spring, by the combined strength of all the opposition parties, just 362 votes, more than they were last Fall. Considering the bue and cry that has been made against us on account of the present political nnd financial troubles, the Republicans of Cincinnati did very well. AoRiciTr.TtrRAL SociETiKs. Through the kindness of Mr. Erie Locke, Chief of the Agricultural Bureau at Washington, we have Ix-en furnished with a list of the Agricultural Societies in the United States. The total number is 1101. A perusal of the list will be found interesting. We expect soon to receive a package of choice Seeds from the same office, which will be distributed gratis amongst our subscribers. .A list will be published when the seeds arrive. " ——>The Hon. Wm. Allen, Representative in Congress from the Piqua (Ohio) District, within the last two months has lost his whole family of four children by that dreadful scourge, diptheria [sic]. ———<>——— ——>We have received a copy of the Centralia Commercial published at Centralia Illinois by E. P. Thorpe formerly of the Peterburg Reporter. The Commercial is to be independent in politics. ———<>—— FRUIT PROSPECTS.—We are glad to rel [sic] ceive assurances from our friends in al- [sic] parts of the county that the fruit prospects are very flattering. No perceptible injury has yet been sustained by the peaches and the probabilities are that all kinds of fruit will be abundant. —<Vin. Sun>.

The Cincinnati papers furaiah us with the following items : Oa account of disturbances in Virginia, the postmaster of Alexandria accompanied the new Southern route age:it of the road to-day in charge of the mail. The tone of the British Government and British press annoys the Secessionists here very much, and will do more to dampen the ardor of the new Government of the Confederate States than anything else. L'p to the close of March only seventeen removals had been made in the census bureau of the Department of the Intrior, and of these, five were made to reduce the force. Secretary Cameron returned to-day. His stay in Pennsylvania was cut short, it is said, by a summons from the President. Something decisive in reference to Fort Summer may now be expected at any hour. The precarious condition of the President's health has compelled him to reduce his reception hours, t'rom this day, officeseekers can only get a hearing from ten to one. The opening of the bids for the new loan was commenced at noon precisely, by Sefcrelary Chaie, in the presence of a large crowd, and owing to the large number of small bids, continued for over two hours. The fact that bids for nearly four times tbe amount wanted were put in, and that the entire loan will be taken at rates ranging several per cent, higher than those of the last one, furnishes a striking proof of the confidence of the commercial and financial public in the Administration, and more especially Secretary Chase. . - The report is confirmed that orders have been sent West and South-west to seize all the foreign goods that may be landed from vessels' bailing from the Gulf ports. St. Louis, Cincinnati, Memphis and Louisville will be the largest depots for the reception of these goods, but as the orders to seize them are imperative, the Government believes that the illegal traffic will thu3 be speedily broken up. ". It is generally believed here that the secession feeling, so strongly ' excited at Richmond, is spreading ia Virginia. This tends to embarrass tbe action of the Administration, and to invest the troublous aspect of the times with evil forebodings. The leading men at Richmond are moving heaven and earth to secede. It ia understood now that the new Minister to Belgium'(took out formal protests to all our foreign Ministers, which are to be laid before the European Governments, remonstratiog against any recognition of the Confederate States. w. The call of a special session of Congress seems to be hourly growing probable. Constant appeals in favor of such a measure arc being made by New York merchants. I am able to state, on the authority of a Cabinet officer, that the troops on board the Brooklyn were really intended for the reinforcement of Fort Pickens, and that official advices received duriDg the last fcrty-eight hours, render it all but certain that the order to laud them has been carried out some days since. Rhitish Exports. The amount of the exports from Great Britain-, last year, was about $675,000,000. Of this amount $26,000,000 was in cotton goods and cotton yarns ; $80,000,000 in wollen yarns; $60,791,000 in iron and steel; and $33,000,000 in linen goods and yams. Pkemicms to Bands. We learn from the Charlestown (Ind.) Dtmjcrat that the Clark County Agricultural Society have decided to otfer a premium of one hundred dollars to the best band, and fifty dollars to the second best, at their approaching fair. Tbe fair will be held on the 11th, 12ih, and KUbdaysof September next. The bauds competing for premiums will be required to play alternately during the three days of the fair.
&SaA correspondent of the Boston Journal writes to that paper the follow! g description of a scene in a prayer meeting ill i New York. The 11 western convert," we
are informed, was from our city : . In the Fulton street prayer meeting quite fn interesting meeting was held.' Monday is usually quite a high day.- , A large number of ministers are usually present. Some minister usually presides, and a meeting of, preat spirit is penerally expected". Oh last ! ' Slouday an unusually tall man with aj Western face made several attempts to get i tbe floor, and at last succeeded. He said be 1 came from Indiana ; that he was so near ! Kentucky that the people were one; they j had a common interest: had intermarried:! and a blow struck at one wa3 a blow at the .other. He spoke of the terror that tbe peo ple on both sides of the Ohio had of civil war. And so agitated, alarmed and oppressed were they that they all turned to God, nnd with common consent allowed that God alone could help. The result has been that a great revival has taken place; five hundred persons have been converted. Nearly all the merchants and men of position have turned to the Lord. All business on the Sabbuth is suspended. The town, Evansville, was noted as one at which all the Sunday boats loaded, and the day was not at all kept. But no merchant will now send on board anv merchandise on the Lord's day, and the boats lay over till Mon day. This man said he was a convert of about three months' standing. He had all the Western fervor that rises at times to true elouuetice. He snoke fifteen minutes. but held the house in breathless siience, , broken only by sobs, while almost every face was covered with tears. It was a thrilling scene, and one long to lie remembered. S.2FPennsylvania contains more th&n one-eleventh of the present inhabitants of the whole Union, and about as many a3 all the thirteen colonies at the tima of the Revolution. The population of the six New England States is but little more than two hundred thousand greater, and the seven seceded States contain a white population of several hundred thousand less than Pennsylvania. The late census returns show that the free population of the Confederate Statea amounts to 2,056,481 souls, including men, women and children. In order to raise the proposed loan of $15,000,000, a tax of $5 G4 per capita must be levied on each individual. LOCAL HOTICES.
