f Charles Matthews used to tell a story of a gentleman who was as huge, though not so witty, as Falstafl'. It was his custom when he traveled to book two places, and thus secure him seat room enough. lie one day sent his servant to book hira for Batb. The nan returned with the following pleasing news: " Sir, I have booked you ; there were not two places inside left, so 1 booked vou one in and one out."

A Nics Little Chcroh Incident. " Will yo'.i marry?" In one of the Washington Churches last Saturday, a pretty occurrence took place. After service a youDg man who carries the collecting plate, ns usual put his hand in his vest pocket to place upon it a pice of money before starting to collect. He dropped, as he supposed, a quarter on the plate, and without, looking at it, passed around among the congregation. Instead of silver, however, he had inadvertently placed a conversation lozenge in the center of the plate, and all were astonished at seeing the lozenge with the words staring them in the face, " Will you marry me?" The young ladies probably thought this was an unusual mode of " proposing," but no doubt it was the sight of them which caused the mistake.

A Verdant Ollice Seeker. The Washington correspondent of the Springfield Republican writes : I must tell you a good story of this wild scramble for office. A farmer-like fellow came here from the West a few weeks ago, and went to work for a prominent $3,000 place iu one of the Departments. At home he had never earned $500 a year, but having seen the Blue Book, he had from t'ie first set his heart on this particular office. By dint of industry and brass he got a heavy list of recommendations for the place, and came on to reconnoiter. He at last went to the offico in the Department; still occupied by one of the first men in the Democratic party, backed by scores of Democratic Senators. The Western gentleman presented himself in the following style : "I am an applicant for your office I expect to get it. Are the duties difficult?" Sir. S saw in a moment who he had to deal with, and with a merry twinkle of the eye replied' " Oh, no ! they can easily be performed indeed, a owcould'transact the business the office on a pinch." " But," said Greenhorn, " I am not much used to the writing business, and I shall have to get you to learn me the duties of the office. I would be willing to pay you fairly for learning me the ropes !" " When you arc appointed to this place,17 slowly replied tho incumbent, "I will give you a fortnight's tuition without charge !" He has not yet been called on to redeem Lis promise, nor do I believe he will be.

JL Bfacturersof HOSTETTER'S CELEBRATED

STOMACH BITTERS can aiipt-al with perfect con

fidence to physicians and citizens generally of th

United States, because the article bai attained a reputation heretofore unknown. A few facts upon this Kint will speak more powerfully than volumos of bare assertion or blazoning puffery. The consumption of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters for the last year amounted to over a half million bottles,

and from its manifest stc . dy increase in times past,

it is evident that during the coming year, the consumption will reach near one million bottles. This immense amount could never have been sold but for the rare medicinal properties contained in the

preparation, and the sanction of the most promt

uent physician, in those sections of the country where the article is best known, who not only rec

ommend tho Bitters to their patients, but a;e readr

at all times to give testimonials to its emcacy iu

all cases of stomachic derangements and the dis

eases resulting therelrom. This is not a temporary popularity, obtatnod by

extraordinary efforts in the way of trnmpeting the

qualities ot the Bitters, Dut a solid estimation ot an invaluable medicine, which is destined to be as en during as time itself. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters have proved a Godsend to regions where fever and ague anil various other bil'ous complaints have counted their victims by hundreds. To be able to state confidently that the "Bitters" are a certain cure for the Dyspepsia and like diseases, is to the proprietors a sourca of unalloyed pleasure. It removes all mor bid matter from the stomach, purines the blood, aud imparts renewed vitality to the nervous system, giving it that tone and energy indispensable for the restoration of health. It operates upon the Htomach, liver, and other digestive organs, mildly but powerfully, and soon restores thein to a condition essential to the healthy discharge of the functions of nature. Elderly persona may use the Bitters daily as per directions on the bottle, and they will find In it a stimulant peculiarly adapted to comfort declining

years, as it la pleasant to the palate, invigorating to the bowels, excellent as a tonic, and rejurenatlng generally. We have the evidence of thousands of aged men and women who have experienced the bene lit of using this preparation while stiff-ring from tomach derangements and general debility ; iutii ? v.odur the advice of Physicians, thev have ahaiiUoned all deleterious drngs, and fairly tested the I., -. its of this article. A few words to the gentler sex. Thre are certain periods when their cares are so barrassiug that many of themsirjk under the trial. The relation of mother aud child is so absorbingly tender, that the mother, especially if she be young, is apt to forget her own health in her extreme anxiety for her infant. Should the period of maternity arrive during tbe sumraur season, the wear of body and mind is generally age ravated. Here, then, is a necessity for a stimulant

to recuperate the energies of the system, and enable the mother to boar up under her exhausting trials and responsibilities. Nursing mothers generally prefer tlte Bitters to all other invigoratois that receive the endorsement of physicians, because it is agreeable to the taste as well as certain to give a permanent increase of bodily strength. All those persons to whom we havo particularly referred above, to-wit: sufferers from fever and ague, caused by malaria, diarrhoea, dysentery, indigestion, loss of appetite, and all dineases or derangements of the stomach, superannuated inva lids, person, of sedentary occupation, and nnrsing mothers, will consult their own physic .v-'.fare by giving to Hostetter's Celebrated Stomach Bitters a trial. CAUTION. We caution the public against using any of the many imitations or nterfeits, but ask for Hoktktthr's CelehratedStomacp Bittkun, and see that each bottle has the words "Dr. J. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters" blown on the sia. of tbo bottle, and stamped on the metallic cap covering tho cork, and observe that our autograph signaturo is on the label. Prepared and sold by IIostetteb A Smith, Pittsburgh, Pa., aud sold by all drngcists, grocers, and dealers generally throughout the United State., Sooth America, aud Germany. novl8-dwlawlyr
