How it Happen". Some of our exchanges have revived the following old but good story. j A number of old politicians, all of whom were seeking office under the government, j Vpra seated at a tavern porch talking, when ;

company uaa uu unjctuuu, u u,uu w. j them a story. Thev told him to "lire away"

whereupon he spoke- as follows :

A certain King-I don t c hs name had a philosopher upon ' Mtxose -ud ment he always depended. Nqw ,t SQ faap pened, that one day the King took u ;Q-0 hi3 head to go a hunting, aud after summoning his noble an(i making the necessary preparation- he summoned the philosopher and Piked him if it would rain. The philosopher told him it would not, and he and his uoble3 departed. While journeying along they met a countryman on a jackass, lie advised them to return, for, said he, " it will certainly rain." They smiled contemptuously upon liim and passed on. Before they had gone many miles, however, they had reason to regret not having taken the rustics advice, as a heavy shower coming up they were drenched to the skin. Vhen they had returned to the palace, the King reprimanded the philosopher severely. " I met a countryman," said lie, " and he knows a great deal more than you, for he told me it would rain, whereas you told me it would not." The King then gave him hi3 walking papers, and sent for the couutryman, who made his appearance. "Tell me," said the King, !'how you knew it would rain ?" " I didn't know," said the rustic ; " my jackass told me." " And how, pray, did he tell you?" aikeii the King. " By pricking up his enrs, your majesty," returned the rustic. The King sent the countryman away, and procuring the jaskas3 of him, he placed him, the jackass, in the ollice the philosopher had filled. " And here," observed John looking very wise, " is where tho King made a great mistake." , "How so?" inquired his auditors, eagerly. " Why, ever siuce that time," said John with a grin, " every jackass wants an office."

MEDICINAL.

HOSTETTER'S STOM ACHJBITTERS. ryniff: fbopbiktobs juvn .w.jvM ufactnrersof nOSTETTKR'S CELEBRATED STOMACH BITTERS can nppval with perfect confidence to physicians and citizens generally of the United States, because the at ticle hat attained a reputation heretofore unknown. A few facts upon this point will speak more powerfully than relumes of bare assertion or blazoning puffery. The consumption of Hostetter's Stomach Bitters for the last year amounted to over a half million bottles, and from its manifest stc ..dy increase in times past, it is evident that during the coming year, the consumption will reach near one million bottles. This immense amount conld never have been sold but for the rare medicinal properties contained in the preparation, and the sanction of the most prominent physicians in thoso sections of the country where the article is best known, who not only recommend the Bitters to their patients, but are ready at all times to give testimonials to its efficacy in all cases of stomachic derangements and the dis

eases resulting therefrom.

This is not a temporary popularity, obtained by extraordinary efforts in the way of trumpeting the

qualities of the Bitters, but a solid estimation of an

invaluable medicine, which Is destined to be as en

during as time itself.

Uostetter's Stomach Bitters have proved a God

send to regions where tever and ague and various

other bilious complaints have counted their vic

tims by hundreds. To be able to state confidently

that the "Bitters" are a certain cure tor the iiys-

pepsia and like diseases, is to the proprietors a

source of unalloyed pleasure. It removes all mor bid matter from the stomach, pnrilics the blood

and imparts renewed vitality to the nervous svs

tm, giving it that tone and energy indispensable

for the restoration of health. It operates npon the

stomach, liver, and other digestive organs, mildly

but powerfully, and soon restores them to a condi

tion essential to the healthy discharge of the func

tions of nature.

Elderly persons may use the Bitters daily as per

directions on tho hottln, and they will nnd in it stimulant ier.uliarly adapted to comfort decliuin

voars, as it is pleasant to the palate, invigorating

to the lsiwels, excellent as n tonic, aDd rejuvenating

generally. We have the evideuce of thousands of

aged men and women who have exierionred the benefit ot using this preparation while suff'-ring

tro:u stomach uerangonirnts and general debility;

actinir under tin advice of Physicians, thev have

abandoned all deleterious drugs, anil fairly tested

tho merits of this article. A few words to the gen

tier sex. There are certain periods when their

cares are so harrassing that many of thomsink un

der the trial. The relation of mother and cr ild is

so absorbingly lender, that the mother, epeciali

if she be. young, 4s apt to foi-t her on health in her extreme auxiety for h-r iutant. Should the

period of maternity arrive during the sumniwr sea

son, tho wear of body aud mind is generally aggravated. Here, then, is a necessity for a stimulant

to recuperate the energies of the system, aud en

able tho mother to boar up under her exhausting trials and responsibilities. Nursing mothers gen

erally prefer the Bitters to all other mvigoratois

that receive the eielorsement 01 physicians, tiecause it is agreeable to the taste as well as certain t J give

a permanent increase of bodily strength. AU those persons to whom we have paricularly

referred above, to-wit: sufferers from fever sud

ague, caused by malaria, diarrhoea, dyseuteri , in

digestion, loss of appetite, and all diseases or de raugements of the stomach, superannuated inva

lids, persons of sedentary occupation, and uurBing mothers, will consult their own physics - -Vf;ire by giving to Hostetlc-r'a Celobrated Stomach Bitters a

trial.
