MONDAY MORNING............MARCH 18 ======= ——>We are placed under obligations to Mr. Green, Route Agent, and Mr. Davis, Express Messenger, for late Louisville and Cincinnati papers. ———<>——— A MISERABLE BLUNDER.—In making up the forms for Saturday's paper, the foreman inserted a candidate's notice among the religious notices, a mistake that we regret. ———<>——— B3 Our dispatches announce that there ! tvere. rumors in Washington Saturday even ing that tha rebels at Pensacola had attempted to seizo a government vessel and that a serious conflict bad ensued. Further news nas looked for with the most feverish anxiety. KrThe Irish Societies of Cincinnati and vicinity are preparing to celebrate St. Patrick's day. The illustrior.3 gentleman was born on the 1 ith, but that day falling on Sunday this year, tho event will be commemorated on the day following. INDIANA ITEMS. The Lafayette Courier says a new disease—often prevalent as an epidemic at the South—called " Dengue," has made its appearance in that city. It attacks old and young indiscriminately, its leading characteristics being somewhat similar to those of the scarlet fever. The Journal of the same city, says the town was greatly excited on Tuesday morning about 1 o'clock, by cries of fire and murder. They were found to proceed from Geo. W. King, who had recently been discharged by the Benton Circuit Court on a charge of murdering Dr. Rowe. He had put up at the Killenger House, and was enjoying a quiet snooze, when the door of his room was burst in and he found himself a prisoner in the hands of the West Point Horse Company, who arrested him on a charge of stealing horses from Lafayette and selling them to a German in their neighborhood. He was taken to West Point for a preliminary examination. The Greencastle Banner announces that the prospect for an excellent wheat crop in Putnam county are very flattering, and that a similar report comes up from all parts of the country. The same paper says a young German of that place, in company with another young man, went a uniting on Sunday the 10th inst. Seeing something at which he desired to shoot, he cocked his gun and handed it to his companion, while he mounted a fence to get a better view. In getting possession of the gun again, it was brought in contact with the fence in such a manner as to discharge its contents into his arm shivering the bone and mangling the flesh in such a manner as to render amputation necessary. His arm was taken off by a physician, and it was thought he would recover. The Madison Courier says it understands that Victor King, Esq., has been appointed by P. M. General Blair, Postmaster for Madison, Indiana, vice Rolla Doolittle. The Sullivan Democrat says quite a sell was perpetrated on the citizens of that village at the winding up of a course of home lectures. For the first time during the course an admittance fee was charged, which the citizens cheerfully paid in consideration of the benefits they had derived from the previous lectures. The understanding was, that the committee had procured a very distinguished lecturer from abroad to deliver the closing lecture. The crowd assembled. After several tunes from the string band, a grave and dignified physician of the place was called on to preside, and on motion a committee of five (embracing representatives of the professions of divinity, law, medicine, &c.) was appointed to wait on the lecturer, L. E. Fant, Esq., and introduce him to the audience. They retired and shortly after returned with a happy representation of a live elephant! That was sufficient. The Fort Wayne Times says the water was to be drawn out of that division of the Canal immediately. It also mentions that a fire destroyed the North Star Flouring Mills at Wabash, Indiana. It says that a member of the medical profession in that city undertook to investigate the subject of Spiritualism, but the spirits were so violent in their demonstrations as to effectually overcome the investigator, and force him to abandon the enterprise. The Washington Democrat mentions that the growing wheat crop in that sectiou looks unusually promising this spring. Also, that a meeting for the organization of a Teachers' Association was to be held on Friday last, for the purpose of advancing educational interests. The Madison Courier says an attempt was made by some scoundrels, a few nights ago to rob an old colored woman in that city. They broke open the door and demanded the old woman's money, but she made fight, and called so lustily for help, that the scamps, becoming alarmed, caught up a couple of quilts and put out. The quilts were picked up early next morning by a policeman, but no clue to the burglars had been discovered. ———<>——— The Lot'isviLLK Post Office, The Louisville Democrat thus indorses the appointment of postmaster for that city: It will he seen, by reference to our telegraphic dispatches, that Dr. John J. Speed lias lieeu appointed postmaster of this city. This is a good appointment, and will be acceptable to a large majority of our pco pie. Dr. Speed is tm old line Whig, and as decidedly a I'nion tnnn ns can he found in Kentucky. He is competent, honest and faithful to tho Constitution, and vve accept tits appointment as a favorable indication f.om Washington.
The Daily Journal. ======= EVANSVILLE, IND. =======
"Washington Items. The telegraphic correspondents of the Cincinnati papers furnish us with the following items of interest :
Mr. Corwin has peremptorily declined tho j Mission to Mexico, tendered him by flir. Lincoln. Whether he will accept some other appointment, if indeed one is tendered him remains to be seen. The President still holds the Mission to England under advisement. It is thought, however, that lion. Wra. 1j. Dayton of New i JerSey or Hon. Charles Francis Adam3 of Massachusetts will ba r.ppointed. J. L. Motley, tha well known historiun i3 urged for the mission to Ilolland. MrLord and Mr. Thayer, both correspondents licre nre nmed prominently for the CollectThoma3, West Indies. Gen. Scott has convinced a great many Republican Senators that there was no al ternative left but the withdrawal of the garrison from Sumter, and the report of the special board ot army officers fully confirms his statement in every particular. E. Joy Morris, of Philadelphia, an accomplished linguist and politician, is prominently named for Sardinia. Anson Burlingame's name is also revived, but Geo. P. Marsti is pressed by the New Englanders as abetter man. Carl Schurz is beginning to turn his attention to some other post ; say tho Brazillian mission, since so formidable an opposition is manifested to his goiag to Sardinia. There are quite a number of office-seekers here from Virginia, mostly for' postoffices. Even from Lynchburg there are five applicants, and the contest in their cases is as vigorous as elsewhere. Mr. Greiner of Ohio, editor of the Columbus Gazette, will probably be selected for the Governorship of New' Mexico, vice Mr. Rencher of North Carolina. Mr. Jones, well-known as a prominent politician, has been appointed Marshal of the Northern District of Illinois, The strife over the Baltimore appointments waxes warm, and a ereat deal of illfeeling hn3 sprung up. Bids for carrying the mail3 in nearly nine hundred route3 ia New York and the New England States will be opened on the 81st inst. The annual cost of carrying the mails in these States under existing con tracts is $1,002,065. Of this, $728, 7G2 ipaid for the transportation of mails over 5,444 mile3 of railroad. ... The detective police of thi. city, whose vigilance ha3 not censed sir.ee the inauguration, beenmo aware of 'the presence of a skillful burglar in this city, and watched his movements carefully. He stationed himself very near the White House, and secreted a complete set of burglar's tools, including false keys for opening doors, nnd evidently contemplated some burglarious actiou on the Executive mansion r. A. Hackleman, of Rushville, Indiana, is to be Federal Judge of Nebraska, an 1 D. K. Cartter, of Ohio, is to be Governor of Nebraska, instead of Judge a change of programme. There is quito an active struggle over the Post Office at New Albany, Indiana. Senator Lane presses John L. Wilson with all his might, and is confident of getttng it for him. A certain gentleman wa3 congratulating Lincoln to-day, upon the cheering fact that so many office-seekers were leaving. " Oh no," says Lincoln, " don't you know that when the flies commence leaving in the fall, the few remaining ones always begin to bite like the devil." Latest developments favor pretty conclusively that Nelson, of Indiana, will cot get the Brazilian Mission. Carl Schurz has no longer any substantial hope of the Sardinian appointment. All the New England Congressmen have protested against him. Lincoin is said to be anxious to appoint Sehu "". but does not desire to take the matter out of Seward's hands. The feeling is very strong here about this matter. All the German Republicans who are applicants, Schurz, Hassaurek, Mansfield, of Indiana, &c, will make common cause together instead of striving to cut one another's throats, as is the fashion with office seekers. EST" The Hon. C. M. Allen arrived at home last evenijng looking well and hearty, and as if legislative honors had not "set him back " any. Vincenne Gazette. His "legislative honors" have not "set him back " any. Honors are not apt to "set " any man " back " very far, and they certainly do not when they have been as well earned as those of Mr. Allen. A more genial, good tempered and efficient Speaker has never filled the chair, and though his apt and felicitous fun, and his tolerance of the unrestrained movements of members, have at times made an appearance of disorder, yet business wa3 never put through with more energy, or watched with more care, than during the term of his Speakership. He has made himself an enviable reputation and very many friends here, not only among the Republicans, but among Democrats, for ho waa always fair and just in the discharge of his duties, and always patient and unruffled in teinbor. But he has given the Democrats some cause to remember him us an opponent as well as an impartial presiding officer. During one of their " bolting" operations, wheu the militia "bill was up, he got the start of them in a way that cheapened their folly, even in their own estimation, very greatly. On the roll call for the passage of the bill the Democrats bolted, of course. But Allen "spotted" some of them who were lounging about in sight, and had thera put down as " present and not voting," wh'oh t.-c ., many ine fact, and thus got enough "on record" to make a quorum, lacking two votea. He knew there were two Republicans sick in the city, and at once had them sent for, so that they could vote before tho result was announced. To occupy the lime till they were brought, some Republicans who were " posted " made some very queer motions, an 1 astonishing speeches. Stearns Fisher moved that the roll call be begun at the bottom and called upwards, and made a long speech in its fivor,to the intense astonishment of the Democrats, who could not guess what was " up,'' and of Republicans who had not been initiated. Iu a lit tic while the sick Republicans'arrived, demanded to have their names called, as they had a right to do before the announcement of the result of the vote, uud their voti;3 made a quorum and legally and formally, ofseil the hill. The confusion of the Democrats, who had no idea of what was going on, and thought they had the bill "on tho dead," when they heard the result, and saw their "bolting" completely " ihecknmtud," may be imagined. They are not likely lo forget Gyrus M. Allen for that little trick in a hurry. Imt. Jour. , The $t;75,ooo loan of South Carolina is not being taken up very fat, and the Charleston papers aie. consequently endeavoring to awnken the slumbering patriotism, of- their readers. Thoy say, " we need'' scarcely appeal," but they do appeal, arid that with a degree of urgency iiiiparently in an inverse proportion to their hope of success.
Fearful Storm In England—Destruction of the Crystal Palace. The great storm in England, in the last
week of February, caused immense damage to the shipping in the vicinity of Liverpool and Plymouth, as well as at other points on the coast. At Chichester, the beautiful stone spire of the cathedral, erected about 1387, fell. So strongly was it built, however, that it sank perpendiculary, preserving its erect position until its base disappeared beneath the roof. The cathedral, though much injured, is not damaged beyond repair. The Crystal Palace, near London, after resisting the first blasts of the hurricane, at last gave way. With an appalling crash, the huge tower fell over among some trees, and lay smashed into millions of fragments on the ground. In the course of two or three minutes more, the rest of the wing went, by thirty or forty yards at a time, till a total length of about 110 yards strewed the earth, a mere mass of splinters of glass, wood and iron. Anything more complete than the destruction it would be difficult to imagine. The appearance of the ruin rather suggests that every part of the building has been carefully broken into small pieces than that it had been merely blown down. A tremendous explosion could not possibly have shattered the place more effectually. ———<>——— IS uiuoicd Division of Arkansas. The Memphis Avalanche says: We have been aware, for several day-., of the deep-seated feeling amongst the delegates from Southern and Eastern Arkansas, to divide from the other portion of the State if the State does not seperate from the dominion of Abraham Lincoln. The proud spirits, who know no such word ia their vocabulary as ." vassalage," are bent upon relieving themselves from any such degradation. The following dispatch from Little Rock, received yesterday afternoon from a highly respectable source, confirms the formidable existence of such a purpose : Little Rock, March 11, 18C1. To E. M. Aj'person $ Co.: Nothing done yet. Propositions to form a new State of Southern and Eastern Arkan sas and West Tennessee, with Memphis a3 the Capital. Send this to Avalanche. ESsf We mentioned the other day the fact that it wa3 proposed by a namber of Democrats, ousted from ofiice by the action of the Legislature, to test the validity of the election ot their Euccessors. These gentlemen have held on to office so lonp that they have come to the conclusion the offices belong to them by some divine, vested, inherited of successive right. Others, who have been displaced from power by the people, and who have no chance to try their chances over again in the courts, have become extraordinarily sour and spiteful. Some of them are even dangerous. The other day one of these gentlemen threatened to shoot a couple of his own political friends for doing something displeasing to his Democratic and ex-official dignity. Like children fed ou sngar plums and candy. Democrats in office are spoiled with a prolonged sucking of the pnblie teat. Ind's. Journal. The Rev. Dr. Ricb. We have already announced thit the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, on the corner of Nineteenth street, had given a unanimous call to the Rev. Dr. Rice, of Chicago. Yesterday a letter was received from Dr. Rice, accepting the call. We congratulate this congregation, that after waiting such a length of time for a suitable person to supp'y the vacancy occasioned by the death of their lamented pnstor, Dr. Alexander, they have succeeded in obtaining the services of such a man as Dr. Rice. JSTew York Post, Tues day. Forts Washita and Arbcckle not Taken. A paragraph from the Galveston News of the 5th inst. stated that the above forts had been taken possession of by two hundred Texans, assisted by friendly Indians. This is a mistake. A gentleman of Cincinnati has shown the Coramer&ial a letter from a nephew of his, dated Fort Washita, March 4th, which say3 nothing of any such occurrence, but on the other hand says that some of the troops which were in Texas have been ordered to those forts. fiST'The Philadelphia Ledger, in an article on the value of street-railways to cities, says: " The value of real estate in the suburbs has been raised nearly fifty per cent, by our city railroad improvement." Similar roads running southward from the river would have the same effect on the value of property in the outer parts of Louisville. Fighting for their Masters. The Charleston correspondent of the N. Y. Time3, snya that when the Star of the West was fired upon by the Morris Island battery, all the negroes threw themselves flat oa the sand and buried themselves in it. ———<>——— The Erie canal is to be opened about the l5th of April. The winter's effect on the structure is now thoroughly understood, and with the force of the Engineer department, the work is so controlled as to be available, and this river, as it is now, can be brought into use at the earliest day. ———<>——— The Empress of tbe French, it is said, is about undertaking a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. She will replace the diamond stars stolen from the cave of the Nativity, and make costly additions to the decorations of the Holy Sepukbcr. From a dispatch to the New Orleans Delta we learn that on the 5th inst. a bill was introduced ir. Ua Southern Concree3, by Mr. Chilton of Alabama, to prohibit the introduction into any of the Confederate States of slaves from the United States. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. 1gxHli&MI"B SJLK J". 175.
