The Daily Journal. EVANSVILLE, IND. ———————
WEDNESDAY MORNING..............FEBRUARY 6 ======= James C Veatch, Esq., The Representative from Spencer county, i3 gaining brilliant laurels in the General Assembly, as we knew be would when sent there, lie proves himself the ablest debater on the floor, and one of the best who has even spoken in the old State House. We were satisfied at first that the floor and head of the judiciary committee were the places for him instead of in the Speaker's chair. TTe congratulate his constituents heartily on having so able a man to represent them. The Cincinnati Gazette's correspondent says of him : Mr. Voatch of Spencer then spoke at length on the report of the Committee of Thirteen, the rpecial order, making one of the most exhaustive and destructive speeches of the whole session, or, indeed, of many sessions. "Old stagers,'' who have been familiar with the voices and powers of llannegan, Marshall, Bradley, Dunn and Owen, say that they never heard it surpassed, lie was replied to ly Mr. Jenkinson of Allen. The Indianapolis Journal says of his late sneech on the report of the committee of 13 : ; The Republican party may justly pride itself on account of the superior ability exhibited by its members in the General Assembly. Whilst it i3 the wish that all questions belonging to National politics could have been kept out ot their tlelibera tions, yet the dangers that menace the peace of the country, and the extraordinary posi tions taken in the report of the minority of the committee of 13, demanded discussion The debate has exhibited much talent, but the speech of Mr. Veatch on Saturday morning is conceded to have been one of the strongest ever made in the Ilail of Representatives. "' It was strong in argument, and Mr. Packard will not soon forget its irony and sarc.rm. We hope Mr. Veatch will prepare a copy for publication. Mr. Yeatch is one of Indiana's most powerful men. Sherman s Speech. We commence in to-day's Daily the great speech of Hon, John Sherman of Ohio, in the National House of Representatives, on the Impending Crisis. At this time, when it is so essential for every person to have a correct under standing of the merits of the great contro versy we are all engaged in, we can publish no more profitable matter than thi3 compre hensive, lucid, and powerful effort of one of the ablest Republicans in Congress. It will run about a week in the Daily and can not be read otherwise than with interest by every adult. The Cincinnati Gazette well says of it : The speech of Hon. John Sherman, to which we have given so large a share of our space to-day, is one of the ablest and truest expositions of the duty of the Government iu the present crisis yet delivered in either branch of Congress. Every paragraph of it will bo rend with satisfaction by the people of the Xorth-west. Conciliatory without time-serving weakness, dissuading from civil war and bloodshed without disloyalty or encouragement to treason, favoring any feasible plan of pacification without consenting to the surrender of what is holier and dearer than the Union itself, this speech of Mr. Sherman fully comes up to the higher standard of statesmanship. - Additioual interest is imparted to this effect by the cross-tires and catechisings of his opponents, from which no advantage over him was gained in a single instance, while the " record" he brought out on their part serves to show, in a still stronger light, the soundness and justice of all his chief positions The olicy laid down by Mr. Sherman is substantially that which we have all along advocated, and is that of Republicans in general. We believe it such as will not only command the support of an almost united North, but bo fully justified by the civilize worht, whatever the results which it may lead. to As a striking indication of the manner in which old political distinctions are ignored in modern .times,, we instance the appointment of Commissioners to the Washiugton Coutert-nce by Gov. Morton. The Governor was a Democrat previous to 1854 the year of the great breaking up and re-forming of parties. He appoints now, as Commissioners, Caleb B. Smiib, P. A. Hat kleman, Godlove S. Orth, and T. CSlaughter, formerly Whigs; and Dr. E. WH. Ellis, formerly a Democrat. Truly there is a thorough homogeneousness between the elements of tlie Republican party. g2? The Cincinnati Gazette's Washington correspondent says it is certain Fort Sumter will be attacked this month if not surrendered by Major Anderson. The writer further says : The whole plan of attacking. Fort Sumter has been arranged. The Secessionists will plant their guns at Mount Pleasant, in a place not, commanded by any guns mounted nt Fort nnrater. Tlieyihus expect to make a breach in the walls of the fortress in leas than twenty-four hours. Tho assault will then be made in boats under cover of night. IpsTrnly the " gelt" rolls into New York in a bountiful stream. Orer $1,500,0.00 came in on the rid - in the Northern Li?tii. " . ' " : ' , fcif The i , nnessee Legislature has. refused to make an appropriation to arm the State. fil.The Tennessee Legislature onThui9day last refuse. 1 to pass a bill appropriating money to arm the State. This occasions no little growling among the Secessionist organs. SSf It is stated that R. B. Rhett telegraphs that tho Montgomery Congress was expected to meet and immediately adjourn over till the Honkr Slate Conference has adjourned. This is considered ' hopeful sign. g(VThe Cinciiiiiaii Courier, the only secession paper in Ohio, is dead. Consent. , JiaFjMr. VeaU-h, representative from Spencer county, delivered a powerful speech on National affairs iu the General Assembly on thft 2d inst. '
HOW THE CALIFORNIANS REGARD THE CRISIS.—The San Francisco correspondent of the New York Times, writing under
date of Jan. 1, says : The secession news is eagerly devoured, of course, but it would be a straining point to say that it creates any excitement. We shall all be as sorry to part with South Carolina as a man is to lose a big molar, rotten at the root, yet into which his dentist has thrust and packed a mint of gold mighty sorry to part with a member that cost him so much, and besides he takes a pride in showing a perfect unbroken set. 15ut it it will grumble night and day, its room will be more acceptable than its com pany. 1 nave hunted in vain tor the hrst Republican who hopes that Lincoln will set hi3 flag an inch lower than the Chicago platform. As to a Pacific Republic, we are as innocent of any such treasonable thought as the regenerated State, with its hands newly washed, is of the sin of Dr. Gwin 3 presence in the Senate. We have uo griev ance nothing but a little State repentance to do. Give us a railroad, and make Schuyler Colfax Postmaster General, and we shall be as grateful, as proud and as happy as a boy with two pocket3 in his first pair of breeches. Oca Schools. In the midst of the ah sorbing cares of business and anxiety on account of the perilous condition of the Un ion, do not forget the examinations now in progress in our Common Schools, as noticed in our business local column. These examinations are highly interesting, and should be attended by parents, guardians, and citizens generally. Strangers in the city will be welcomed at the schools. It is encouraging to pupils, teachers, and trustees to have the public take an interest in their labors. Nothing so sharpens the intellect as the desire to display mental acquirements creditably before the world. Col. Hayne's negotiations with the President are ended. In reply to the proposition of South Carolina to purchase Fort Sumter, the President briefly informed the Secession Commissioner that Congress alone had authority to dispose of the Federal property. BThe Louisiana Secessionists have been robbing on a large scale, having seized the Branch Mint containing $350,000. They will argue, we suppose, that the Mint was put there for the " defense" of New Orleans, and, therefore, the Independent Kingdom of Louisiana had a right to take it. Cin. Gaz. gA gentleman of Indianapolis informs us that on last Sunday in that city, at the closing exercises of a meeting at one of the Methodist Episcopal churches, Bishop Ames astonished and thrilled the congregation by the following prayer : " We thank thee, 0 ! God, that while treason stalks abroad in high places, there is one man who loves his country ! one man who will defend his country's flag ! God bless and protect the gallant Major Anderson and his noble band !" The " iimens" which came up from the brethren around, were loud and enthusiastic; and when the congregation arose from their kneua, smiles and tears were seen struggling in many a countenance. Ex. To Correspondents. We have several communications on file which we should like to publish and have been trying to find a place for, but on account of the press of Legislative, Congressional, and telegraphic matter, we are unable to give place to much that would, under different circumstances, be published. We hope contributors to our columns will take this for an apology, and not be offended at our apparent disfavor to their writings. The news is demanded by our readers in preference to everything elsei and that crowds on us so in these stirring limes that even we ourselves are debarrrd from saying many things through the paper ttiHt we feel like Bay ing. The daily record of current facts and events has a claim over mere theories, speculations, and opinions. EfS.Thanks to some unknown friend at Indianapolis for copies of the " Annual Report of the Treasurer of Staf? of the Slate of Indiana, showing the receipts and disbursements of the' Treasury Department from Nov. 1, 1858, to Jan. 1, 1861," and "Report of the Commissioners of the Sinking Fund, dated Jan. 1, 1861." We presume they are from Mr. Hopkins. fgpThanks to Hon. W. S. Holnian for a copy of his speech on the "Right of Secession rthe Impending Crisis," delivered in the House of Representatives, Jan. 16, 1861CSayRead the glorious Union speech of Mr. Bonligny of Louisiana in the telegraphic dispatches.
