pretty much of a ruin, and the fire a heavy blow to the congregation, it has demonstrated in a most conclusive manner, the value of our steam fire-engines. The want of a central alarm, and the frozen condition of some of the hose, caused an unfortunate delay in the case of two of them in getting to work. But when they did come into play, they did what no ordinary force of hand engines could have done tbey kept the fire within its original limits, and undoubtedly saved property enough by that means to pay for themselves. Our -citizens are, of course, so far well satisfied with their capacity and performance. Tbo walls of the Church edifice are not materially injured, and it is probable the floors are safe to a great extent. Of course the building could be repaired, if the congregation should allot to do so, at a comparatively small expense. The' have however contemplated removing to a more eligible site, and bought a valuable lot for that purpose, a year or more since. Unfortunately there was no insurance on the building destroyed. The Sabbath School Library, a very valuable one, wa3 saved, as also the melodeon, and some other movable property. This is tins fir:;t cvrre fire we have had fur a considerable time. No very important billj hfiv l.uen pusscd by the Legislature since my laxt 'letter. A groat number have been introduced, but motit'.y of a merely lotl character. One very important one was introduced on Friday last, by the Committee of Ways and Means, providing for a loan of $V.i,000, till May next, from the Sinking Fund, to meet the current expenses of th: State. It twiscd
the House, but has met with ome objections in the Senate, where it is etill delayed. The question with that body seems to be, whether the money should be borrowed from the Bank of the State, so a.-- not to delay the distribution by the Sinking Fund, of that amount of school moony, wbile the Committee think it more important to leave the Bank at liberty to accommodate the public to the largest degree. The Senate will probably decide the matter one way or the other to-day. The new state officers have now all entered npon their duties, aud are habituating themselves to their new positions as rapidly as possible. A tough hickory slaif has been placed on the dome of ths Cpitol instead of the pine pipe-stem first erected, and the national flag now wa-vc out jrUantly from it. , We have haJ a remarkable, "spell'" of clear cold weather, not intense, but g;a?onable, and severe enough to prevent wheat and fruits from coming forward so rapidly as to be killed by a later frost. This is not a temporary popularity, obtained by
extraordinary efforts iu the way of trumpeting tha qualities of the Bitters, but a solid estimation of an invaluable medicine, which li destined to be as en during as tiate itself. Hostetter's Stomach Bitters have proved a GodS4.nd to regions where lever and aue and various other bilious complaints have counfed their victims by hnBdreds. To bo able to state confidently that tlie "Bitters" are a certain cure for the Dyspepsia aud likd diseases, is to the proprietors a source of unalloyed pleasui e. Should the period of maternity arrive during the summer season, the wear of body and mind is jrenerally aggravated.
