TUESDAY MORNING..................JANUARY 29 ======= Soldiers During tbe Revolution. " The following table, derived from the Report of Geueral Knox to Congress irr 1790, in obedience to a call on the War Department by the House of Representatives, shows the number of regular, soldiers fura-. ished by each State to the War of the Revolution. It is not copied to draw an invidious distinction between the patriotism and courage of the two section, but to show that the section which particularly , plumes itself on it3 prowess and readiness to fight on all occasions, is not really the most willing to enter into the actual realities of war when the time comes for that dread busies?, and thnt the peaceful North is likely to be " on hand " when war mu.-t come: SoUiers. Pop in 1790. New Hampshire... 12,497 Ma sachusaiis, inciU linjr Maine... 67,097 . .Rhode Island 5,98 Connecticut 31 959. New York 17,781 New Jersey 10,726 Pennsylvania 25.678 Delaware 2,386 Maryland 13,912 Virginia 26,678 North Carolina 7,263 South Carolina 6,417 Georgia 2,509 141,891 475.257 69 110 238,141 340,120 181,139 434,373 59 098 319,748 748,308 393,751 249,073 52,548 230,811 3,732,537 Vermont was an independent State and furnished and paid her own troops during the Revolution. By a hasty calculation we learn that the per centage of soldiers furnished in " the times that tried men's souls " to,the entire population was as follows : New Hampshire, nearly 9 per cent. Massachusetts, including Maine, a little over 14 per cent. Rhode Island, nearly 8 J percent. Connecticut, not quite 13J per cent New York, a little over 5 J per cent. New Jersey, nearly 6 per cent. . Pennsylvania, nearly 6 per cent. Delaware, a little over 4 per cent. Maryland, a little over 4$ per ceut. . Virginia, a little over 3 J per cent. " North Carolina, not quite 2 per cent. South Carolina, a little over 2J per cent. Georgia, not quite 5 per cent. ' The average per centage of all is a little over 6 1-6 per cent. It is true that they were nearly all slaveholding States, but the present inhabitants, as a general thing, are descended in a direct line from the people who then populated the above States, with this difference in favor of the North, that since, there has been a vast infusion of the foreign element into the Northern States, which is, by inclination and training, a fighting element. If it is said that the negro slaves formed a large part of the Southern population, anu are counted in the table as such, it can be replied that there were also ne;ro slaves in the North ; and also that black soldiers were called into requisition to a considerable extent in the SSouth. We mention these facts only to remove a general impression among our Southern friends that the Northern people are all non-combatants and cowards, and that, rather than defend their rights, they will endure any amount of bullying. God forbid that the courage of either section should be put to the test I No reflecting man, well acquainted with the two people, doubts that both have an abundance of grit. Only Southerners who never come North, and Northerners who never go South both ijrnoraiit of history doubt the ability of the other people, respectively, in the field. It is well to remove such false impressions. Kansas to be Admitted. By a reference to our dispatches ' it will be seen that the Kansas bill has passed both Houses of Congress. It only lacks the approval of the President to become a law.--That cannot be withheld. So here is an act of tardy justice about to be consummated. ———<>——— ——>Patrick McHugh, the wife murderer, suffered the extreme penalty of the law at Cincinnati on the 18th. It will be remembered that he cut his wife's throat with a razor in March last. On the scaffold be exhibited the most shocking levity of manner, and just before he was launched into eternity made a confession of his misdeeds. ———<>——— THE COMMON PLEAS COURT has adjourned for the term. Judge Pitcher has transacted the business in such a manner that the satisfaction of bar, clients, witnesses, and attendants may be said to be general. There has been no slip-shod work about it, but all has gone on systematically and understanding. A new era has opened in this county with probate and other business belonging to this Court. The wisdom of the people of this common pleas district in selecting an experienced and learned jurist for this responsible position is fully vindicated. ———<>——— fifeS It is reported that Congress intends to repeal the duty of some 24 per cent, on foreign sugar, now that Louisiana has seceded. The Personal Viberty Law of Rhode Island has been repealed, by a large majority, in both Houses. It is stated that the Massachusetts Legislature will probably repeal the PeraonaV Liberty bilb. t,The dwelling of Matthew W. Sedam on Sixth street, Terre Hante, was destroyed bv fire on theniarht of the 26th. Insured. ggyTbe New Harmony Advertiser copies Mr. Seward's speech in full and speaksquite favorably of it. . tg,We are informed that Mr. Samuel Orr shipped $1,500 worth of pork yester day to a gentleman in Georgia. The or der was accompanied by the cash.
Ts Retttai; of religion now pf ogressing with such astonishing power in this city is not confined to tbe Union meetings of which we have written several notices. In Ingle
Street (M. E.) Church, under the charge of Rev. Mr. Hobbs, a' revival has been going on for two weeks. There have been twenty conversions, "and sixteen accessions to that church, four of the twenty having joined other churches. At Mr.Sterritt's Presbyterian) Church a series of protracted meetings have commenced, and promise excellent results. Twenty-five persons have been at the altar. These manifestations of the workings of love and peace, at a time when we have so many rumors of war, are remarkable. The Evansville and Crawfordsville Railroad, we are glad to say, has now all the freight business it can convenientlj do. Vast quantities of produce are coming down lhs Road for shipment on the River. This will fill the treasury of the Company (at which all must rejoice, for it is a great and valuable public work), enable it to employ a large number of persons who otherwise would be idle,, break up the stagnation which has prevailed in business for a couple of months, and give many of our people something to think of than the hard times We are requested to state that Miss Laura E. A; DeFobse, the celebrated lecturer on Spiritualism, is at the Sherwood House, and will commence a series of lectures to-night on her favorite subject at Marble Hall, at seven o'clock. Mis DeF. has delivered twelve lectures at Terre Haute to crowded auditories. Her friends ask for her and her cause a fair bearing and wish to cordially invite the public through thig paper to attend. H-i In consequence of the throng which attends the Union religious meetings at Locust Street Church, rendering it impossible for all who wish to attend to be accommodated, we are requested to say that the nigh meetings will be divided and that while one portion still occupies Locust Street Church the other will hold service in Mr. Sterritt's Church, corner of Second and Vine streets. The morning meetings will be held as at present. The Orphean Serenaders have the thanks of tbe Journal office for two delightful musical entertainments, late at night when the printers needed the charm3 of "music's magic spell" to revive their weary energies. Our young amateur friends are making gratifying pregress in the " art divine." JB"We have been condensing with great labor the full proceedings of the Legislature into a lengthy abstract, which we begin to think the mass of our readers generally do not read with more satisfaction than they would the shorter abstracts published in the Indianapolis Journal. We shall hereafter cop these abstracts instead of making extended ones as heretofore, and expend our labor on and give our space to other matter of f qnal if not superior interest. : ' V We have at hand a great speech of John Sherman, representative of tbe 13th Ohio District in Congress, which speaks the right doctrine. Our space cannot be better employed at this time, when a fair understanding of affairs is needed, than by its publication. Therefore we expect to copy it in a couple of days) It is a little longer than Mr. Seward's, and is plainer, bolder, and less oracular .than his. A majority of people in this community will endorse every word of it. It is intrepid and honest, yet kind and charitable. : i" NFW ADVEPTISFMENTS .1 Ml.niJVISTRJTOR'8 JVOTMCE.
