KO-VDAY MUKNtNti. JANUARY 38 Indianapolis Correspondence. Ixdianapolis, Jan. 24, 1S61. Editor Jocbxal : I mentioned in my last, that the flag of our Union was to be raised above the dome of the State House on Tuesday afternoon. Both houses of the Legislature adjourned in honor of the event, and our three military companies and three steam fire engines turned out in all the pomp and circumstance befitting the occasion. The weather was all that could be desired. All necessary preparations were made at the appointed" hour, and the immense crowd of men. women and children stood witn gze fixed on the lofty dome to see the stars and stripe3 rise to their lofty position, and fling their folds to the breeze. Slowly and majestically the ample flag began its ascent from the roof, when, having risen a few feet only, snap went the shatt and down came about nine-tenths of it hurtling in fragments to the .ground! A thousand white handkerchiefs that were just about to be waved by fair hands, were thrust incontinently into a thousand sidepockets, and the shouts that were just about to issue from several thousand masculine throats gave place to murmurs of disappointment and vexation. When it was found, from examination of the fragments, that a sleuder pine staff had been expected to sustain the weight of a flag of unusual size, the mystery, if not the vexation, was thoroughly dispelled, and it seemed to be agreed on all hands, that there was need of hickory in other places besides the President's chair. But in orii-. not to frustrate the pageant altogether, a pulley was rigged to the short stump of the staff that remained, and the flag was drawn up as far as the nature of the case admitted, and folded itself partially around the dome, suggesting the idea of protecting the Capitol, and the interests it represents, from aggression and harm. In that position it was saluted by the artillery, and the music, and the screams of the fire-engine whistles. Next came speaking from the State House steps by Senator Lane, Ex-Governor Hammond, Hon. T. A. Hendricks, and Governor Morton. The speeches were happily interspersed by the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, by Miss Richings, an actress now performing an engagement here, and who also recited, in another interval, Cutter's poem, " E Plnribus Ununi.'' The whole was concluded by an expression of thanks to the assembly from Mr. Ilefl'ren, (he irrepressible "gentleman from Washington." The multitude separated, resolving in their minds, doubtless, that "All is well that ends well." A committee of three, two from the House and one from the Senate, left on Monday night for Springfield, 111., to visit the President elect, in relation to arrangements for his being accompanied to Washington City by the larger committee appointed for that purpose some days since. They returned last evening, and, it is understood, made satisfactory arrangements for carrying out the resolution appointing the committee of escort, or whatever it may be termed. The most important business transacted yesterday, was the appointment, on joint ballot, of Berry 11. Snlgrove as State Printer. Thus another Editor is in luck. Tt is no disrespect to my excellent friend, Berry, to observe, in the language of the ancients, " that every quodruped of the cacine species has hi3 day of good fortune.'' Berry's services have been arduous and effective, and lo ! his reward is ample. May his shadow never be less. Scribe. Revival. The extraordinary revival of religion that has been progressing here under the auspices of various evangelical churches for several weeks, is still carried on with the greatest success. For a time these Union meeting were held in the Curuberlanl Presbyterian Church each morning and evening, and during their progress there, many penitents sought the Throne of Grace. The meetings have been transferred to the Locust Street (M. E.) Church, and are now being held morning and evening under the ministry of Rev. S. T. Gillett, assisted by ministers of other churches and leading members. Daily accessions are made to the rauks of professing Christians from the '"world's people," and the good work still goes on, shedding joy and gladness in its path, and making the community more thoughtful and approachable by good influences. A spirit not of this world is at work on the hearts of the community, bringing about the most benign results. Men and women who have heretofore held aloof from the services of the sanctuary and the ministrations of the Gospel, find their hearts pierced by the shafts of conviction. The best of consequences are sure to result from this great awakening One of the best features about this revival is that it has been carried on by the united efforts of different denominations. Bigotry and intolerance are thus bam'shed, and catholicity awl unity of spirit are encouraged. Thus the various churches are now apt to be looked on as only to many roads to " the better land." This is as it should be. This state of things is auspicious, and indicative of the approach of a more aiilleuial period in the history of God's Church than it has ever yet enjoyed. The Fink Weather that we have enjoyed for the past week or so is remarkable for mid-winter. While the people a hundred mile3 and over North of us are shivericg with cold, in this latitude we at the time of writing are enjoying weather that i3 next to spring in iu mildness. We have had no extremely cold weather during the present winter, but most of the lime the weather has been quite mild, mid favorable to outdoor business. i Such weather iu winter is very pleasant to the feelings and promotive of busiue33, but there i3 one disadvantage about it it is liable to damage the growing wheat. Already some of our farmer friends tell us that the freezing at light and thawing during the day, with no snow on the ground to protect the growing wheat plants, is causing the roots to be exposed to the weather by the earth melting and running away. This process leaves the plnnts without nourishment in the spring, aud causes them to wither and tail to nature. Last year, in this portion of country, the wheat was generally seriously injured, and if the present weather continues there is reason to fear that it will again suffer.
Sprisgfield Items. A dispatch from Springfield, 111., says : Strong remonstrances against Chase's appointment have been received by the President elect from Pennsylvania and Maryland. The Pennsylvanians say they carried their State on the protective tariff question, and hence don't want an avowed freetrader in the Cabinet. Frank P. Blair arrived to-day. He says the day of compromise is gone and the day of fighting come. He has no apprehension of the secession of Missouri. W. W. Gitt, a Virginia delegate to the Chicago Convention, is here to urge Montgomery Blair for the Cabinet and secure something for himself.
N. O. & O. Railroad. At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the New Orleans & Ohio Railroad, on Saturday night last, Hon. L. S. Trimble was unanimously elect ed President. The Judge will enter vigorously upon the duties of his position, with a determination to finish the road at the earliest possible period. His appointment is a good one, and all are pleased with it. Paducah Herald. A Mistake. The announcement we copied on Saturday from the Cincinnati Times, that the Kentucky Legislature had defeated the convention scheme, turns out to be a mistake. We are sorry for it. It would have been a peace measure. That Legislature has adopted the resolutions applying to Congress to call a National Convention for proposing amendments to the Constitution. Louisiana Out. The Pelican State has sailed out of the Union in a paper boat and is now on the stormy gulf of secession. See dispatches. Texas, it seems, will launch herself next. That will make seven Of them :six have already become " independent." Persona going South now had better get passports. It will be foreign travel. Jg We neglected yesterday to give thanks to Mr. George Stockwell, for late copies of the New Orleans Crescent and St. Louis Republican. Dr. W. M. Daily is principal of a chool at Troy in this State.
