FRIDAY MOUSING... .JANUARY 18 "SSL. The steamer Bremen arrived at New ""York on the 15th from Southampton. Count Kechberg, the Austrian Premier, ; will probably soon resign and be succeeded by Count Jlenadorf. A. party favoring the annexation of Rome to Sardinia made a demonstration at St. Peter's Cathedral on the 23d ult. The Emperor of Austria sanctions the incorporation of Hergigovina with Hungary- - The King of Naples had taken refuge in a Spanish vessel every night, returning to Gae'ta every morning. ISSa- We learn from the Terre Haute Express of the l"th, that Governor Lano was elected U. S. Senator on the 16th. He received 68 votes in joint convention ; Joseph A. Wright 57. Gov. Lane immediately offered bi3 resignation as Governor, and Lieut. Gov. Morton took the oath of office as Governor of Indiana. It ia a Bingular fact that Indiana has had four Governors since the first of October. Gov. Willard died on the 3d of that month, , when Lieut Gov. Iiararoorid became Governor.. He served till January 14th, when Got. Lane was inaugurated. Gov. Lane served two days', when he was elected to the " ;U. S. Senate, and wa3 superseded by Lieut. Gor. Morton. Four Governors in less than four months I Ci&r We learn from a private letter that ' the Democratic members of the General Assembly 'nominated, in caucus, on Tuesday night, Gov. Wright, Minister to Berlin, for U. S. Senator. The nomination of course is an empty honor. Governor W.'s turn has not come just yet, though when be returns from abroad he -will -work hard for ' 'BrightY place, to be filled in 1863. Mr. Seward'3 recent great speech in the U. S. Senate, taking very moderate grounds and reflecting the views that are to govern Mr. Lincoln's administration, ha3 ccme to hand and will be published in this " psiper next week. It ought to be generally read, -as it. embodies the views of a wise . ;statesman and the next Secretary of State. iSTThe- report of a serious difficulty be- ' 'tween Gen Scott and' Seuator Toombs is '; pronounced false. Senator Toombs made " Boaie.lard remarks at a private dinner partj at 'Mr. Corcoran's, but there was noapplication to Gen. -Scott, nor did any angry TemaTks pas3 between them. - ' . : -'JJlGBT. A petition will be presented to lie Legislature to abolish the office of State ' Printer, and to let the Printing cut to the '"'lowest-responsible bidder. It is a reform .'much needed, and we trust that the Republican party will have the honor of inan- ' gurating it. Richmond Broad Axe. We'are .glad to see our Republican cotemporaries taking this ground. The party have made Innumerable pledges of economy and retrenchment, and these pledges must be fulfilled if the party wish to retain the confidence of the people. This printing is one cf the most glaring and notorious wrongs that exists, and if the Legislature paEses it over without correction, the Re. publican majority will be called to account for their failure to etop a mo3t grievous leak in the Treasury . We hope the members may keep their pledges to the people in mind and carry them out. It they re- . gard the continued success of their party and their principles they will do so. ———<>——— ——>A fire broke out in South Carrolton, Ky., yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon in a new house occupied and owned by Dr. Jackson of that town. The fire originated in a room occupied by an old lady, and it is supposed caught from the stove-pipe. Loss about $3,000. We get these particulars from Mr. Henry Miller, Clerk of the Mattie Cook. ———<>——— JggrRev. Robert C. Rice, an eminent minister of the Christian or Reformed Baptist Church, committed suicide by shooting himself in hi3 room at the Spencer House, Cincinnati, on Sunday, January 13th. He was a residence of Eminence, Ky. His first wife having died, he married again, but parted from the second soon after marriage. His unhappicess arose from there circumstances. Parson Drownlotv, of tin? Knosville Whig, speaking of the forced lean in South Carolina, gays : " The Palmetto State is in the condition of the fellow who said ' It is nothing to get married, but it i:i h 11 to keep house." ———<>——— ——>Miss Coltrin, the young lady who accidentally shot the charge of a pistol into her face on the steamer Mariner at Cannelton on New Year day, is recovering slowly from her injuries. The sight has returned to her left eye, and that organ, though now weak, will in a short time be as good ss ever. Specks of powder may still be seen, imbedded in the sclerotic coat. The right eye is yet in a bad condition, the ball and interior of the lids being bloodshot, and vision having apparently left it. There is a bare possibility of this eye being saved.— The powder that was imbedded in the face is slowly working out and will probably be altogether eradicated. The young lady is at Capt. O'Riley's residence, and under the skillful care of Dr. Magennis will soon be able to travel again. She has exhibited considerable nerve in her sufferings. ———<>——— EThe Kentucky Legislature met extra session on Thursday, the 17th inst. Egy During the year 1860, there . were 26,C74 bushels of wheat shipped from the town of Sullivan, on the E. & C. Itailroad. gjtThe steamer Bremen, which arrived at New York on the 15tb, brought $:i,800r 000 in specie.

in favor of "The Union,", tbe Constitution, an.i tbe Enforcement of the Laws.'' Those who supported Mr, Bell also-hold this doctrine. In fact, until since the election, noboy held, or claimed to hold, any other doctrine. As a good deal 13 said about coercion, and attempts are'iiiade' bylEerecliless and un principled to prejudice the Republicans be cause they deny tbe right of a State to se cede froir the Confederacy, and "hold that it I is the right and the duty of the Federal Government to maintain .its integrity Ten by force because bf the3e attempts, T propose to call your attention to the- views of tjro men, who3e opinions, in their time, were wont to hare weight with the men who now so shamefully attack what they once themselves fully endorsed. J ' And first let us hear what Hcry Clay said : - -. .... . On the 1st day of August, .1350, in the United States Senate, Henry Clay, in answer " to the threats of disunion made at that lime, said : . . ' , Now, Mr. President, I stand' here in my place, meaning to . ,be- unawed .by any thteats, whether they come from individuals or States. I should deplore as rrtich as any man living or dead, that urms , should be raised against the authority of the. Union, either by individuals or States. Bat, after all that has occurred, if any . one State, or a portion of the people of any State, choose to place themselves in military array against tbe Goverrcieot of .the Union, I am for trying the strength of. the Government. I am for ascertaining whether we have got a Government or not practical,. efficient, capable of maintaining ita authority, and of upholding the powers and interests which belong to a Government. Nor, Sir, am I to be alarmed or dissuaded from . any such course by intimation of the spilling of blood. If blood is to.be spilt, by wUosafault is it to be spilt? Upon the supposition I maintain, it will :be the fault of those who choose . to raise the standard of disunion and endeavor to prostrate this Government; and,"sir, when that is done, so long-as it pleases Uod to give me a voice to express my senurueots, or an arm, weak and enfeebled as it may be by age, that voice and that oj'iu will be on the. tide of iny eountni, for the support of the. general authority, and for the maintenance of the powers of this Union. And now let us hear what Stephen A' Douglas said : . ... - On the 27th of August lastJudge Douglas had an enthusiastic reception at Norfolk, Virginia, and spoke in the presence of C,000 people. We quote from "the telegraphic dispatch of that date to the Associated Press : In the middle of his address, a slip of paper was handed to him. It was cut ; from the Norfolk Daily Argus, and contained two polite questions:. .. . The first is : " If Abraham Lincoln be elected President'' of the United States, would the Southern States be justified in seceding from the Union?" Mr.' Douglas said : " To this I emphatically answer, No !" " The election of a man to the Presidency -by the American people in conformity with the Constitution of the United States, would not justify any attempt at dissolving this glorious Confederacy." Applause. i becond : " if they, the Southern States, secede from the Union upon the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, before he commits an overt act against their constitutional rights, will you adviseor vindicate resistance by force to their secession ?" " " I answer emphatically, that it is the duty of the President of the United States and all in authority under him, to enforce the laws of the United S:atis. passed, by Congress, and a." the Courts expound them; and I, as in duty bound by my oath and Sdelity to the Constitution, would -do all io my power to aid the Government of the United States in maintaining tbe supremacy of tbe laws against all resistance to - them, come from whatever quarter it might. " In other words, 'I think the President of the United States should treat all attempts to break up tbe Union by resistance to its laws as Old Hickory treated the Nullifiers ir. 1332." Applause... . . , . . Let the Demagogues put the foregoing 1n their pipes and smoko it. . Exauixek, Got. Laxk's First Lsteb.
