' . I Indianapolis Corrcspondeuce, Indianapolis, Dec. 22, 1800. Kuitor JocKSAi. ; Tbe date I have justl n"wu rcuiiaus me iaai idis la lureuuirs' Day" a day sacred in the memory of ill loyal eons of New England ; but I have 10 rhetoric to waste on that subject just low, when all your available space is ned-'-'d for the " Latest by Telegraph from South Carolina." But " to put myself right on ,ae record," as the lawyers say, I must disavow one word your compositors made me use in my last missive. I spoke of the probable patrons of the Heenac demonstration, then about to conie off in our Theatre, as hUar-eyed, among other physical and J-oral characteristics. ' Your types make me call them Hue-eyed. Now the blue eye has been too long deified in song, as an ele ment of beauty, and an accompaniment of lovelineB3,'speci:illy in the female perstiasion, for me to desecrate it by its use as a mark of the class of whom I was then speaking. And I hope nl! fair owners of that personal attraction among your readers will exonerate me from the evil-speaking yoar types would make me chargeable with.- " ' ------ - In a late number of your paper yon refer to a notice by our Daily Journal of alecture then recently delivered by Dr. Durliin In our city, to a meagre , audience, in connec tion with which the Journal repeats a remark f Barms, an actor, that a representation of the Last Rapper, with an original cast of the twelve Apostles, would not draw a crowd in Indianapolis, if a " Nigger Concert" was in the way. That remark of the actor is likely, by the aid of the Journal, to have a fair run, though not to help the cause of the Theatre in our place much, among his own profession. Though not destitute of smartness, I for one accept it as on the whole creditable to our community ; for while I do not regard "Nigger i Concerts" as a high order of amusement, by any mean9, they are innocent, at least. But a Theatre is simply a plague-spot in any community, and if every one in existence was blotted from the earth to-day, the great interests of virtue and morality would be advanced in a wonderful degree. As to the amallness of Dr. Durbin s nudience, the Doctor's forte is not as a lecturer, and his subject was one not calculated to interest the popular mind greatly. And further, a large proportion of our citizens buy season tickets to the Lectures of the Young Men's Christian Association, and qp care less about incurring extra expense in attending lectures furnished under other auspices. Dr. Durbin came under arrangement with another society, a respectable one, but less prominent and energetic than the one named, and incurred disadvantage on that account so far as a large andience is concerned. So that neither the fewness of the Doctor's hearer?, nor the sarcasm of the actor, should be received as proof that our citizens are indifferent, to the pleasure and profit to be derived from able lectures and Hcientific musical entertainments. For it is not the Ethiopian style of music alone that nears away me palm irom tueaTncai-entertainments here. ' Such . companies as ..the Continentals, and especially the Old Folks, always draw, and even concei ts, gotten up by the amateur musical societies nmoVigonrselve?, always fill the house. ... . A Republican Union meeting was held in the Court House tui.fternoon, aud-waa attended by a crowded auditory. Kotert B. Duncan, Esq., was called to the chair. An able letter from Celsius M. Clay was read, and speeches made by Judge Coburn, Messrs. Harrison, Fishback, Dr. Thompson, and some others. Appropriate resolutions were also passed, which, with the letter of Clay, and the whole proceedings, your will see in the duo course of the papers. " The spirit of the meeting was enthusiastically tor the Union and its preservation. Some of the speeches wero trifling, but others, 68 Coburn's mid Harrison's, were noble vindications of the Republican party and Us principles. 5 " Yours,' - ... .J Scribe. The Washington corre8uondeiitvtf the Louisville Journal p,ives tho follow iug account of the mahner in which the Pacific Railroad bill passed the House ; ,. '' J. " J The passage ol" the Pacific ' Railroad bill was a great achievement. It will ha bailed with delight in Kentucky, whose citizens are largely interested in the success of the Southern Pacific road, which has hceri ! Tiherally provided for in this bill, - although strange to say it received most of its support from the Northern men in the House.- When it was brought up on Tuc-3day as the regular order of the day, objections wcr made to its passage without consideration, in. the committee of the wholo House on the state of the Union. The principal opponents of the tneasurt were Ueagun, of Texas; and Branch, of North Carolina, who on account of his captious opposition, has ..earned tho soubriquet of Sir Lucius O'Trlgger tfranch. The opposition fought well, and the Speaker ruled in their favor, consequently the bill went to the committee. -Tlien commtneed some of the sharpest 'pai liamentary practice that has ever bceu witnessed in Congress. The bill had a majority "iu iia favor, but it was supposed that in sending it to " the Committee of. the Whole it had been consigned to the tomb of the Capulets from which ' there would not possibly be any resurrection during this Congress. . There" were seventyfour bills before it on the calen-lsir of the Committee, and tho rules required, that they - should all be taken up seriatim and disposed of. A number were called and laid aside, until at lust, by an arrangement of the friends of the measure with Col. Curtis, the Chairman of the special Committee of Thirteen on the Pncilic Railroad, when a bill to aid the construction of a railroad in Nebraska was under tonshiexation, an amendment was moved by Sir. Sherman, and the Pacific" llailroad bill was offered by Curtis as an amendment to Shermans amendment. This placed it beyond the reach of other intendments and a direct vote was obtained and tho bill adopted by a large majority. E 11'urts wero subsequently made to load it down with amendments, but they were unsuccessful. The bill was reported to the Honse, and finally passed. ; It is regarded in the light of a pacificatory measure. It does ample justice to both sections, and on this account received n support that might not otherwise have been given to it. There is no doubt of its passage in the Senate at an early day. Thus, in the rnid3t of the preparations for dissolu tion, one of the most important and cxlcii- j sive public improvements, iuieude.l to fur- ' nish another and a strong link u the bonds j of the Union, will have been beun.
