SATURDAY MOUSING.. DECEMEER 22 Egy We publish today a letter from the " seat of war " in Kansas, giving an jnteliigeut and truthful account of the terrible Montgomery raid wc have heard to much about for two or three weeks. The letter u very interesting, and we shall be glad to hear from our correspondent frequently, and so will our readers He will please accept our thanks for t'uia letter. Tho "Extra" he alludes to, we have not room for. It is headed, in display type, "Extra I From the seat of war ! The battle at its height Death and Victory Montgomery victorious !---15,000 killed ! 2,000 taken prisoners !'' And then it goes on, in a at rlo worthy of Russell, in his famous Crimean acd India battle bulletin?, to tell of the fearful havoc committed by Montgomery, nd the remendoua military demonstrations of Harney. There is plenty of blood and thunder in the ' Extra' and no wonder it created a eensation even in Kansas, where they are accustomed to such experiences. Interesting Letter from Kansas. , Lkrot, K. T., Dec. 10th, 18C0. Editor Joukxal: After several years silence, I have once more taken pen in band to hare a confidential chat with yoar numerous readers, and, as Kansa3 is once morn geUing an unenviable reputation in the State:?, I shall confine myself entirely to herI presume you have heard all sorts of rumors iu regard to the doing3 of Montgomery and his land, and are prepared to believe that a3 desperate a set of villains as ever went unhung infest the south-east border of our territory. Well, the object of this letter is, if possible, to disabuse your minds of all such nonsense; and in order to do so I wil.' endeavor to commence at the beginning, or rather at. the beginning of this last difficulty (if it can be styled difl'.culty ) for if I should undertake to tell tho whole story I should have to go back to '55 and '56. Our people, who were on the very verge of starvation from the continued drought, Spanish fever among cattle, kc, were verv much startled and excited when they received the President's proclamation, putting the Xpw Vork lands in market; and na the sale of those lands would ruin thousands of our best citizens, they naturally net about taking measures to prevent speculators from buying their homes from over their hoadj, which thry could not binj. Montgomery, who has always sympathized strongly with the people, told them their homes should not tie sold ; that if he could not prevent it otherwise he would take 500 settlers there and prevent it by force. Well, nearly all the sales are over, and the settlers have not lost their lands, and they have Montgomery to thank for it. It was done peaceably and quietly, but effectually. Again : the Indian Agent of the Cherokee nation ordered the settlers olF of the neutral lands something over a year ago, hut they were told by prominent men that the neutral land would soon be open for pre-emption, and were advised to remain on them. A short time ago the Agent, at the head of ft body of troops, devastated that whole country, burning over one hundred houses, and turning over a hundred families out on the bleak prairie ou the verge of winter, with nothing but the clothes on their bodies, and many of them with not a dollar in the world. Such acts naturally exasperated the people ; but as yet they committed no offense. Now we come to the grand act of rebellion. Justice at Fort Scott, like that of Lecompton, was administered with a tardy hand to her pro-slavery favorites, lu fact it has always been proverbial that a lree State man cculd not get justice there. Like all other places occupied by government officials, it was a den of pro-slavery desperadoes, and every species of oppression was practiced on the settlers. At the laud office they were bled of their last dollar, and a trial for nn alleged crime was equivalent to a verdict of guilty. A short time ngo a free-State man was arrested for murder. .Montgomery sent Jnrtjre Williams word that if the jury was not "Composed of half tree-State men he would burn the detestable hole over his head. (Montgomery is a preacher, holds service every Sunday, and of conrso don't swear.) Williams immediately struck a bee-line for Missouri, and circulated all sorts of silly stories. And this is the sole origin of all the silly dispatches you see in the Eastern papers! We who live in the adjoining countu ret all our news of the battles, kc, iu the Eastern pa- j pers. There is not the least excitement i here about it in the world. It is true, Gen. H irney is there ,vith 700 troops, bat he custcs Williams blnxklmd blue for getting) biro down there on a toni-fool errand. He ! says he ought to have a little catuip tea and ! b put to bed. Several of our citizens, and ! among them our Postmaster and two other i Douglas Democrats, were dowu there Satur- j day. They say they are laughing heartily ' down ftt Fort Scott at Granny Williams's ; care. i Of course you know Fort Scott is uot j molested; that no town in Missouri has ! been interrupted in any manner whatever; I and if any of your neighbors should desire j to visit Montgomery, they will, in all prob- J ability, find him on his claim, perhaps with ! an axe in his hand making rails or chop- ; ping cord-wood. And I presume the troops ' can arrest him if they will go to his farm, ' for I am satisfied he would not resist, at ! least if ho thought he should have a fair trial on any charge which might be laid agaiusthim. Inclosed I send you a burlesque printed at the ttat of tear. So ready were they to swallow everything dreadful at Leavenworth, that some of the Dugs were willing to swear it was a true statement of a battle. We bad a glorious rain last night. Winter wheat looks splendid. Do not be surprised if wo have splendid crops next season. Excuse this hastily-written letter. The mail is closing iiud I have not time to look it over. Yours, kc. Ci. A. JAMES BUCIIANAN. Washixqtow, Dec. 14, 1860. dec21-d and jvtd. Lbttkr from thb Oover.vob Elkct of Indiana.. His Yibws os the Existing Cbisib. The following letter from Hon. Henry S. Lane, Governor elect, was written to a friend in Kentucky, who had sent him the anti-secession resolutions of the people of Clark county, in that State : Craw fords vi llk, Ind., Dec. 8. My Dkar Sir: I have just received your very interesting letter of the 5th inst. 1 have listened with intense anxiety to hear the voice of old Kentucky in the present alarming position of our public atfuirs, and I recognize that familiar and potential voice in the resolutions of your meeting in Clark county and in the grand utterances of Judge Robertson's letter. Tour resolutions are worthy of the noble Commonwealth of Kentucky, and equal to the emergency which called them forth. The letter of Judge Robertson is just what the county had a right to expect from the well known, long tried and true patriotism of that able, honest and earnest citizen of Kentucky. The State of Indiana is true to the Constitution and loyal to the Union ; our people arc ready and willing to enforce every requirement of the Constitution of the United States, and to obey and execute in good faith every law, State aud National. The present dangerous aud alarming condition of things iu the South bus been brought about by misrepresentation and misapprehension in reference to the opinions and principles of the Republicau party. They have been taught to believe that we meditate war upon their domestic institutions; uothing is further from the truth. We have neither the wuh nor the power to interfere with slavery in States ; and we confidently believe that the honest, economical, wise, patriotic and conservative course which will be pursued by Mr. Lincoln's Administration, will effectually disabuse the minds of our Southern brethren from all such Injurious impressions. 1 am proud of the high and patriotic position taken by rov native State. It shows that she has not forgotten the lessons (.night ! her by the great Kentucky Commoner, j Henry Clay; that she is not unmindful of the heroic glory that clusters around hrr history, end illustrates her mature age, 1 rely upon the sober sprond thought and sound common sense of the people to counteract the insidious and treasonable attnck3 of pestilent Demagogues, whose motto is to rule orTuin, "who would rather reign in hell than serve in heavefy . The relation of mother and child is j so absorbingly tender, that the mother, especially I if she be young, is apt to forget her own health iu 1 her extreniw anxiety for her infant. Should the j period of maternity arrive during the summer pea- j son, the wear of body and mind is generally aggravated.
