RIVER ITEMS. ——— STEAMBOAT REGISTER. ARRIVED. Lady Pike, Memphis; D. B. Campbell, B. Green; W. V. Gillum, Green riv.; Grey Eagle, Louisville. DEPARTED. Lady Pike, Cincinnati; Grey Eagle, Louisville. ——— ......The river was rising rapidly during the entire day, but we anticipate it will come to a stand soon. The Ledger of Tuesday afternoon reports it to be on the decline at New Albany. Should it continue to rise as rapidly as hitherto, many hours longer, we have fears that the cabin of O'Riley's wharfboat will be swept from the hull. LOUISVILLE, Dec. 18.—River falling rapidly. 9 feet in the Canal. ......The damp, rainy Weather yesterday rendered the transaction of business quite disagreeable. Beyond the usual stir manifested on the arrival and departure of the regular packets, no transactions of any importance came under our observation. ......The Jacob Musselman leaves to-day for the Wabash. She is a new and substantial toat, and can carry freight safely up and down that stream if any boat can do so. ......The fleet Dunbar is the regular mail packet for Paducah at 1 o'clock. Passengers and shippers will bear this in mind. ......The Grey Eagle arrived "on time" yesterday with a light trip. We are indebted to her gentlemanly clerk. Will Duvol, for a late New Albany Ledger in advance of the mail. .......The W. V. Gillum arrived from Green River with a fair trip. Her chimneys look as dilapidated as ever. Capt. Collett should keep the chimneys of his boat erect. ......The Dunbar left with a moderate load. ......The D. B. Campbell arrived from Bowling Green with a good trip of tobacco, &c. She unloaded and then laid up in order to complete some needed repairs. She will then resume her trips. The Mattie Cook will assume her days of departure and carry the mail in her stead. ......On Sabbath afternoon, one of our back country friends, who had a large lot of turkeys, geese, and chickens on the levee awaiting shipment, concluded that New Orleans at the present time was not the best market for poultry, especially Northern poultry. Accordingly he turned out his geese and turkeys, and started them on a tramp homewards, in a vast drove. The coops and chickens he placed in wagons, and with all his "fixins," decamped. We venture that deep curses were vented against the secessionists who in their mad designs against the Union have so materially affected the price of chickens, turkeys, and geese. ......The following items we glean from the New Albany Ledger: It is a singular fact that no boat from the Ohio river, bound for Arkansas river, has reached its destination this season, and no less than six Arkansas river boats have been sunk within the last four months:— They are the Rose Douglass, Tempest, Masonic Gem, Interchange, Ellen Gray, and South Bend. Truly the Arkansas river packets are in bad luck. The Jacob Strader is to resume her place in the mail trade between Cincinnati and Louisville one day this week. Her machinery, just put in at Cincinnati, it is said works well. On Southern boats the passengers amuse themselves by taking votes for secession, the Union, &c. The former generally have the majority, and by this means the general sentiment of the South can be be ascertained. SINKING OF A MEMPHIS WHARFBOAT.— The lower wharfboat at Memphis,' most generally known as "Smith's," being overloaded with the freight saved from the Flying Cloud, sunk about 12 o'clock on Sunday night—the water being some four feet over the larboard guard, while the starboard side is out of the water. All the goods stored have been taken out, though in a damaged condition, The boat belonged to A. J. Vanarman, Esq., and was not insured againt [sic] water. It is doubted whether she can be raised again. ......The chimneys for the Magenta are up and add much to the appearance of the boat. There are two large gilded balls between the chimneys, by which the boat can be designated at a great distance from all others. It is our private opinion that those balls will come from ,New Orleans to this port many hours sooner than those of any other boat afloat.—N. A. Ledger>. ......The Cincinnati Gazette of a late date says the Argyle and A. O. Tylor have Wen laid up owing to the pressure of the hard times. ———<>——— HA1LUOAU UBCKIPTS.
