MONDAY MORN I NO....... .DKCKMBEK 17 Eij"" We can with propriety presume that the Wabtish & Erie Canal baa gone under, and left us destitute of any outlet whatever. This canal has been for'a period of years a drawback upon the citizens of rise county, and m tact ot the whole country through which it pmsses. It baa never beeu in operation more than four nioutha out of every year, on account of oreans, A-c, thereby depriving the citizgna along the line of any reliable outlet. Th people at lust have lost confidence in its cffieieucy, and declared their determination of not bustatniug nn institution which does tiot return h (air reiunneration for their support. It therefore becouie3 necessary that the citizens of Pike county turn their attention to the expediency of constructing a more reliable and substantial thoroughfare ' intersect with others of still greater diujonsir,n:)) auii forming a complete net-work of comiuLnU-ation all over the United States, and lirin ns in directconiniuuication with the great commercial cities of the West. If suffer ourselres to remain in this state of destitution, our country would decrease in Health and iu imputation. While if we na?e an outlet thai can be relied upon, tmifrant:) would settle among us, and the -Agricultural advantages of the county be developed, bnsini'ss would assume a different aspect and Pike county soon stand among fbe Juremnst counties in the State. . , Petersburg Reporter, Dee. C. Waiiliks. We understand from a reliable source, that the Governor of Indiana 6is made the following military appointxueeJ.i for Spencer county, viz : R. S. Hicks, 4'olonel, 5th Regiment; Dr. John 8. HougbJand, Lt. Colonel, and Thomas W. McCright, Major. The commi.ssions have been received, and we learn from Col. Hicks, that so soon as ,he conveniently can do so, he will proceed according to law, to organize the regiment, appoiut his staff, and the Captains and Lieutenants for the several townships. Verily, there are stirring times ahead. Wars and rumors of wars, are rife throughout the land, and none know how soon the Militia of Spencer may be called upon to act more than a child's part in the approaching troubles. We hope that there may be no occasion tor calling out the Militia of Indiana, ibut should such a contingency occur, we doubt not, but that the 5th regiment would immortalize itself upon the tended field. Our comuninity were shocked to learn Saturday morning that the residence of Judge James Thorite, -fuLout five miles from town, was burned on Friday night, and that Judae T. ,ypri."hed in the tiames. It seems that the tive originated from a defective chimney. Xhe f;irni!y were aroused, and barely succeeded in making their escape. Judge T. iv.ed a portion of his furniture, and had gone back to procure his books, papers, &c, which were in an upper room aud this 'W the lust seen of him, until his charred and blackened bones were discovered among the smouldering ruins. It is upportbi that he was overcome by the beat aud iiuoke, And thus perished. Judge Thorue had for many years occupd a Drociiuent position in the county. He had tilled the ollice of Probate Judge, served one session iu the Legislature, bad noted a3 deputy Sheriff, and was at the time of his death Swamp Laud Commissioner. His melancholy end has cast a gloom over the whole community. Vin. Sun. Man Killed. We are informed thai a very unfortunate affair occurred at Spottsville last Suuday night. The fact iu the v aic iLcse, as nearly as we cau ascertain: -One Lysle, formerly a steamboat mate, and -v,ka had been making himself, generally Jis.ireeiiblo to the people of Spottsville, broke into the bar-ruotu of a boarding house kept by a Mr. Price, frightening the children very muchand drank his fill of liquor. After Mr. Price's return borne, Lysle came back and attempted to enter the house agaiu, and was forbidden by Price. Lysle puraisthig in his efforts, Price brought out his shot gun, loaded with buckshot, and shot him dead almost on the spot. We learn since writing the above that Price tm acquitted. Henderson Mail.
