From a cursory glance of theircontents.it is shown that the cost per annum of the African Squadron, from 1843 to 1859, was $384,000. The cost tor the present year is estimated at $180,000, owing to a majority of tbe vessels employed being war vessels. The caucus which was held last evening at Brown's Hotel was composed exclusively of ultra men from the South. None of tbe moderate men from Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana were invited. Believing that a practicable line existed for the Pacific Railroad to cross centril California, I determined before the next session of Congress to examine the various passes of the Sierra Nevada in this vicinity. There is no grade over 1 3 feet to the mile. We got out of Summit Valley through what I call Lake Pass, while Fremont's route or the old emigrant road goes over Eureka pass, which is about 700 feet higher.
