FRIDAY MORNING. ..DECEMBET. Union Meeting at N tv Albany There was a Union mectiug in New Albany on Thursday night, Nov. 20th. The Ledger has the following to say of it : The Union meetiDg at the Court Uouic last evening was very largely attended by our citizens. Every inch of sitting and Standing room was occupied, and hundreds went away unable to obtain admittance. From the position of our city, the people of New Albany feel a deep and all-absorbing interest in preserving the amicable relations of the two sections of the Confederacy, and the gathering at the Court House hist evening was simply an exhibition of this fueliiig. The resolutions are herewith published. They undoubtedly express the sentiments of a vast majority of our people ami mean just what they say. We believe this i3 the tirst union meeting held in the North, and we hope the movement will be followed up by our sister cities of Indiana and other States, (u the immediate presence of danger party should be lost sight of in the country. From the State Sentinel wo learn that citizens of all partits participated, and that the Chairman, James Brook3, i3 a Republican, and the Secretary, James C. Davis, a Bell and Everett man . The Vice President, Dr. E. Newland, is a Democrat. The committee on resolutions were J. D. Norman (editor of the Ledger), John ('. Culbertson, Dr. D. H. Cadwalder, and George Gresham. CThe Covington Democrat (a Repub lican paper) names George Nebeker of that (Fountain) county for Canal Trustee. We think the Trusteeship ought to be given to the lower portion of the Canal, inasmuch as the upper portion is already sufficiently looked after by Mr. Butler and Mr. JDowling. Vanderburgh county now has a Trustee Mr. Raleigh and she or some other county on the lower portion of the Canal ought to have the Trustee to be elected this winter, in order that there may be somebody to look after the work down here. Undoubtedly Daviess, Pike, Gibson, 'Warrick, or Vanderburgh ought to have the Trustee. jQyThe Bodiatn Mining Company is furnishin? coal, delivered, th"t3 season, at the rate of 9 cents per bushel. Thi3 is 1 cent per bushel cheaper than it was delivered for last year. Evansville Journal. The Spencer County Mining Company, are delivering a superior article of Coal in Rockport., at 8 cents per bushel, and think they will be able by next season, to furnish coal at C cents per bushel in Rockport, and at the Evansville Wharf at 8 cents. lock. Don. We think our Rockport cotempornry is jumping at a conclusion when ho pronounres the coal of his county better than that of our B.xlitirn Mines. Ours is hard to beat by any Wr-stcrn co il, fjr heating a'nd steam purposes. E.rjyIu a financial article the Indianapolis Sentinel of a late date says : Tie banks in this State were never in a soun ier condition. The demands upon them for coin were less for November than Oeloliei-, and the available means of the lank3 are considered ample for any contingency that may occur. Immediately alter the Uunk of the State went into operation, we recommended that they should pay out only the notes of their own branches. If this advice had been followed, they now would have a reliable circulation at home ; the notes of foreign institutions would have been kept out, and a great loss saved to the community and the banks themselves. It is never too late to learn wisdom, aud we trust our bankers will profit by the experience forced upon theru. This policy is pursued in Kentucky, and with decided advantage. The circulating medium in that State is mostly the notes of its own banks, and in the revulsions which have occurred it has given them strength. Tssas. The Louisville Journal, speaking of this State, says : " Who supposes that Texas wants to go out ot the Union? When she wrested her independence from Mexico she was a sovereign government and might have remained so. But so anxious was she to get into the Union, and some of the present Secessionists to aid her in getting in, that the propriety of the mode of admission was not stickled at, but she was lugged iu head end shoulders, rough and tumble, just as the annexationists could get the best hold upon the " bright eyed sister " of the far South. When comfortably settled in her changed family relations, her new associates paid her debts, and assumed her liabilities ; since which she has been getting along prosperously and happily, until the liquor-swilled YVigtiiU took it into his addled head that she must secede because she is oppressed ! What consummate folly ! But the old hero of San Jacinto holds the helm of State yet, and while he controls it, the name of Texas will never be coupled with dishonoror treason." Disastrous Stoum at Tim Souxu. We have received no telegraphic despatches direct from New Orleans for several days. We are informed that a terrific storm passed over the country south of Jacksen, Miss., the present week, and that it in all probability extended to the'Gulf. The train on the railroads south of Jackson have been stopoed, and telegraphic communication with New Orleans has been cut oft". The storm has doubtless been very destructive in its consequences, and we a-,vait the reception of news from that quarter with painful interest. We received a dispatch from New Orleans last night, it is true, but it contained nothing definite in reference to the storm on the line of the Jackson Railroad. A train had been thrown from the track at a bridge, by which accident the conductor and others had been killed. Lou. Star. tJQ,. The sous of " Auld Scotia celebrated St. Andrew's day in Cincinnati, In. dianapolis and Madison, in their usual jovial style. Iu Indianipolis they dispensed with strong drink, and confined themselves to water we suppose through the influence of Judge McDonald, a teetotaler, cue of their number. HJg" The best way to obtain a lucrative oBice is to run in debt to a great many men, then all your creditors will feel an interest in your election, and of course vote for vou. V. We suppose the chap who wrote that lias " tried it on." lie seems to be posted.
A Scntlble View. . Thompson's Bank Pfote lieporter of a late date says of matters in New York : We would respectfully urge upon everybody the necessity of keeping coo! and quiet in the present political agitation! There never was a solider bottom of prosperity ; ami with masterly inactivity, a quiet confidence, and a graceful forbearance, all our financial, commercial, and political troubles will soou vanish ; then we shall wonder that the present foolish fright wai so powerful in panic making.
We had a panic within our day very ; much likft this it. n-ns when .T-iol. ami rp. ! moved the deposit from the U. S. Bank iu 1831, we think. The crash was terrific; it soon died out, and in CO d tys all was prosperity again. That, like this, was a political panic ; Biddle, like South Carolina, was on stilts, bent on rum. tie bought some, but frightened more ; and finally subsided. That was Jackson vs. Biddle, alia3 the Administration vs. U. S. Bank. This is South Carolina vs. the United States. South Carolina, population 700,000, half slave?, against the United States, population thirty millions, one-eighth slaves. It requires no great trust in Providence to see the end. We advise quietude. The fever will have its run ; and the more docile we all are, the faster will be the recovery. It is impossible that much real damage can be done by South Carolina. The injury arises from excitement and foolish croaking. If there had been no telegraphs or sensation paper?, thera would have been no scare. Our exports are largely in excess of our imports, bringing Europe largely in debt ti this country. This balance is drawn for, and the exchange is sold in the market in unumaljciamnts ; and. OM'ortur a'dy at thrs time, the politicians have destroyed the financial and commercial balance wheels, so that credits are circumscribed and the money market made stringent. Hence sterling bills are selling at $4 444 CO per pound. A pound sterling, in gold, is $4 SO to wit, a sovereign. Sterling, then, is C(j?;I per cent, discount. The price of our great staples cotton, tobaccoprovisions and breadstuffs rests upon the foreign demand. As things are uow shaping, the producer, by reason of the political panic, is the loser by the fall iu exchange, of 710 percent, on the amount. -The loss of 3 per bale on cotton, !(: per barrel on flour, and the same rates on all exports, in the one item of exchange, is but a moiety of the loss that the producer suffers by reason of the political panic now raging. Dealers in the great staples, in the South a3 well as in the North, necessarily resort to credit. The U3ual chanuels for borrowing being closed, and all competition destroyed, the producer, by reason of this state of things, is at the mercy of the very few buyers who have ready money to invest in great bargains. Taking a candid view of the present state ot attairs, we ver ily believe the producer is bound to lose r I per cent, of the fair value ot his crop. Whether this dead lock in our commercial and financial machinery is to bar us from filling the Enopean demand iu advance of other countries, or whether much of our crops will remain on hand to glut our markets at some future duy, when no foreign demand exists, rests much m the continuance or cessation of the troubles. Connecticut. The otlicial vote of Connecticut was ns follows : Lincoln 4.!, 79'2 ; Douglas, 15,522 ; Breckinridge, 14,641; Fusion, Bell and Breckinridge, 4,852 ; Bel!, 1,485. The total vote is 77,202, which is 11,000 less thau the gubernatorial vote last spring, and 3,000 less than the Presidential vote in 1850. The faliing oil' is mostly with the Democrats, as Lincoln s'nnds 2,077 higher thau Fremont, and only GOO less thau Gov. Duckmbam. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
