riiTRSDAT MORKIXG DKCKMEt E e Tbe Padacah Herald of the 1st of December is out iu a long article iu favor of recession. The puritr lias been hinting treaon for several Tvetks, and cow it is talk'nir it right out. This crime is getting to be Mhionable in the South, and accordingly ihe Herald falls into "the stvle." 1 I.v Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Kinri, the Republicans hold the balance of sower. Had the votes cast for Lincoln in ?ach of those States been given for Dell, the iatter would have carried them all. A3 it s, he loses them all. In Virginia, the decoral vote is very close, and will lie divided t cording to the latest news. The Louisville Journal is fighting n loble battle for the I'nioit. Mr. Prentice is he champion of the Federal Union in the j South. Ilia burning fatiie, trenchant wit, J .HTEiiasiYe logic, and im-ontrovertible facts ; an not fail to produce the most wholesome ; Union feeling wherever his paper is read. Every pulsation of his heart, keeps time to .ho niuruc of the Union. No treason can lonriah . here George 1). Prentice has an nfluence, and that is throughout the whole rountry. fksy A Chicatro dispatch to the Kustern papers says it is considered settled that no Cabinet otlicer will be taken from Illinois. This in as it should he. Both Illinois ami Maine have officers of the highest grade, by rote of the people, and will undoubtedly oe content without asking still further favors of that sort. The Cabinet should oiue from other Slates. ( it. Cur.. Indiana will claim and most likely revive a Cabinet appointment. Her services n the Chicago Convention and the election ?utitle her to one. gefThe Cleveland Plaindealer thus maps out five new Republics, and gives some account of their staples : RF.PrM.IC NO. 1. A Southern Republic with all the Slave Stutes, save Delaware and Missouri, the iatter in fact and feeling being a Western State and will soon be. as free as Ohio, with New Mexico and the Indian Territory. The staple productions of this Republic would be cotton, tobacco, sugar and niggers. EKI'L'HLIC no. 2. A Wefrtern Republic, including the seven North Western States, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska. The productions of this- Republic would be wheat, corn, beef, pork, potatoes and Popular Sovereignty. republic no. The Central Republic, including New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey aud Delaware. Ihe kilter named State has elected a Liucoluito to Congress aud has not niggers etiouii in il.iv to run a respectable hotel; The production? uf the Central Republic would lie a great variety of cereals, panic makers and politicians. atsrTBLie No. -1. Th Puritan Uepubiie, including the six New I .igland States. Pro t n lione. Prayers, Priests, and Pumpkin p. if. UFITBMC NO. ;. The Pacific Reptiblic, including ("alilui'tiiu, luegouand Washington Territory, with the eventual addition ot Sonora and Utah. Staples. Oold, drizzly Rears and Rallies, condition nf the Southern Kniilti. The condition of the bank of I ho Soutli having attrnelod attention, c present i statement of their capital, circulation and specie as thay weie in January last. It will t.e observed that the proportion of specie b large, being ne.irly half ihe amount of nous in circulation. At Ibis season the Southern banks are always taxed to their utmost capacity, to make the necessary advances on ihe cotton shipped to the North am! to l'.urope. It is customary at this time of the year for the. banks in Ihe cotton-growing States to withdraw from ordinary customers the usual tacilitips granted to them, in order to purchase cottou lulls of exchange. While urrent pay incuts at the North remain unliquidated, the proceeds of the cotton bills Hie applied to payment, of those maturing liabilities, a vl this season is always the one at which Southern payments are made. The refusal to discount paper by any of the banks in the Soulh must therefore not be taken as an evidence of weakness but the simple result of the fact above stated. The present condition ol the exchanges indicates that the South has paid otl" her accrued indebtedness, and following the laws of trade, we niuat soon expect to ship specie to Southern ports in moderate amounts. The accession of a few millions will soon enable the hanks to expand ami resume their loans on local paper. Capital. Circul'n. It is undeniable, that the people in these parts are worse off' for money at this time than ever before. Why? No one can tell. It has all disappeared sudden ly and almost unaccountably. Some of our collecting oflicers have resigned and others talk of following suit, alleging as a reason, the utter impossibility of making collections. ur Sheritf will be hard up to meet the demands of the State against him, from the fact, that the tax-payers, generally, are without the needful. What is to be the result of all this? (iod in his inGnite mercy can only tell. Coupled with this unexampled scarcity of money, we understand many show a disposition to press the collection by law of what is owing them. Should this lieoouie general, the legislature should undoubtedly be convened, to devise some scheme for the people's safety, without aflecting the rights of creditors. How, and in what manner this can be done, will have to be left to the wisdom of Legislators. Should however this storm about the stability of the government blow over, we may recover from all pecuniary embarrassments, and go on prospering and to prosper as we have done in times that arc past aud gone.

A Severe Case ox DiptheUia' Crr.En. The following severe case of dipthcria is iutcresling, showing, as it doc.- , I hat tLii malignant disorder may possibly be cured even in its moit advanced stage. It appcurs that several days ago Felix Scully, twentyeeven years of age. and a uative of Canada, was conveyed to the City Hospital, while suffering from a very violent attack of diptheria. After being placed under the treatment of Dr. Cornyn, at the City Hospital, the disease begaujfjield readily to the local application of a etrong solution of nitrato of silver, mild mercurial cathartics with quinine and a blister to the nape ot the neck. The case progressed favorably until the afternoon of the 14 ill inst., when the unfortunate man, under the conviction that1 he was beyond danger, left Lis bed iiittlieestt! and walked with bis bare feet on a cold, uncarpetcd floorf and so remained for fully an hour, and until forced by his nurse to bed. During the following night all the symptoms became intensely aggravated. The tonsil3 were again covered with a thick coating of a greyish white appearance, and the breathing very diftitnlt. The same treatment was resorted to as iu the beginning, and continued during the whole of the 15th, until 7 o'clock P. M., when upon visiting him, he was found lo be on the verge of suffocation, and his whole appearance gave evidence that the respiratory function wei almost suspended, that life could not. be prolonged more than a few moments Medicine had" failed, and life was fast yielding to the) terrible garoter, dipthei ia. The only hope a shadow- one was 'to open the ' windpipe below the larynx. This Dr. Cornyn did as soon as the instruments and appliances could Vie got ready. In the operation, he was assisted by Drs. Hodgen and Thompson. When the opening was made into the windpipe, there was an immense gush of mucous, mixed with shreds of the false membrane, whichwas blocking tip the trachea anil larynx. A silver tube was at once placed in the opening through which the mucous and lymph continued to escape, until now his recovery is placed beyond a doubt. St. Louis R'i.

Yale AnRicrLTntAL Lkctcrrs.' The public will be gratified to learn that the novel experiment of the Vale Agricultural Lectures of last Winter was so snecessful as to induce its repetition this Winter on a more complete scale. The course will commence Feb. 5, and continue through the month. These lectures which are of great value to the whole country, and worthy the attention of every cultivator, are given under the auspices of the Vale Scientific School, or Scientific Department of Vale College, as a supplement to its newly-instituted course of practical collegiate education, and for the benefit of the public at large. A new and important feature of this course will be its complete illustration by specimens, drawings, models aud aniuial3. Life-sized paintings of groups from celebrated herds will be included iu these illustrations. The lectures on training and breaking horses are to be accompanied by practical illustrations. The lecturers of last year will tal:e part in the course, and other eminent names, with a variety of new subjects, will be added to the list. The expenses of the course are provided for in part by subscription. The lectdrcs are under the direction of I'rof. John A.
