THURSDAY MOBKING; ....NOVEMBKR 29 Report of the School Trustees. To the Mayor and Common Council of the City a Evanirillr. Gentlemen : The undersigned beg leave to make their quarterly report of the condition of the Common Schools iu this city. We have at this time fifteen Schools one High, four Grammar, four Intermediate, and six Primary. Below we give a synopsis of reports of Teachers for the quarter ending November 16th, 1S60, in which we give the number of children registered in, average number belonging to, average daily attendance in, and per cent, of attendarce in each School ; also, number of cases of tardiness, number of Scholars cot tardy, and number not absent ; also, the number studying German. We experience much trouble, and we regret to say that our Teachers have been insulted by parents and guardians, on the subject of written excuses for absence of Scholars." We here give the Rule of the Board on this subject, passed November 14th, 18.".:t : "Rule 1st. All pupils are requested to be punctually and regularly at School, and if the pupil be late or absent, he or sho shall not be received without a written excuse from the parent or guardian, dated, and giving the cause of absence." To comply with this rule can be no great hardship, and would save much trouble to the Teachers and Trustees. We do not want to know whether Susan has been washing dishes or rocking the cradle, or whether John has been blacking boots or sawing wood ; but we do request parents and guardians to state whether the child has been sick, or has been playing truant, or has been kept at home by their wish. 50 y-. y. This is too bad aud need- correction, and who more proper to remedy this great evil thun parents or guardians. We do hope ihat parents and guardians will carefully read this report, aud see to it, that children for wbonithey will be held responsible shall be re. ularly at school, so that they shall not be deprived of the blesaiugs offered them iu our ft co schools. If the scholar misses one recitation it can never be regained unlcbs it keeps back the whole class. We are j' leased to state that the Teachers are paid in full for the first quarter of this school year. It Is knoTn to your body that H. Q. Wheeler resigned his office of Trustee and Superintendent of Education, on September 18, 1800. In his resignation the schools of your city have suffered a severe loss. We ask you to till the vacancy and elect a superintendent so soon as practicable. Last year we had thirteen Schools and twentyueven teachers ; this year we have fifteen schools and thirty -one teachers. Last year yon had threo trustees and one superintendent ; this year, bo far, you have only two trustees and no superintendent. There ha been an increase of labor and lesa force yet are our schools in a good condition. This being the state of the case, much labor has devolved (tn one of our Board Hornbrook and we think yon cannot ask hioi to devote ho much of his time to the detriniant of his business without, a reasonable recompense. We do not think that a trustee as trustee should receive any pay, but whenever any of the Board does labor for the schools not required by the law, he ought to be paid. We would call the attention of your body to the fact, that we have at this time two hundred and thirty-nine scholars, who have been transferred from Pigeon, Knight, Center and Perry Townships for school purloses. In the Townships from which they bave been transferred the school fund gives them a school from three to five months per annum, whilst in this city they are receiving ten months schooling. Is it right that they should receive this additional schooling free of charge? P. If okMSRooK. Nov. 24. 18G0. Caul Schmitt. One of tub Effects. Oue of our largest wholesale houses received lroni the South, early in the Fall, an order for a large supply of an article manufactured here. The first shipment was mode in October, and others were to be made during the winter; but a few days ago the order was countermanded, the house losing a sale amounting to several thousand dollars, and the mechanics a good winter's job. It is thus that the innocent ate made to suffer in consequence of abolition fanaticism. W. A. ledger. Doesn't the Ledger believe that the above would have happened without the election of Lincoln 1 Its editor knows that the South is not in a good financial condition, owing to short crops, and that this alone is sufficient to account for such an occurrence as the above. What is tho utility, then, of making such i'ar-1'etched surmises aa the above. Dead. The man Wright, who waj shot by young Saodford, on Friday last, died at noon yesterday having survived his wounds about 44 hours. We learu he has left a wife aa& tour children who reside in Buffalo, N V. Coroner Beuson held an iutiuest over the body last evening at the Bantu; House,' aud the Jury returned a verdict that the deceased came to his death from a wound, by a ball discharged from a pistol held in the hand of one Bruce Sandford. The wound, n3 the physicians who made a post mortem examination, testified, was abouta4 inches above the right nipple, perforating the third or fourth rib and passing directly through the lung, being iu their opinion necessarily fatal. hi i i r The Elopement Affair. One day last week we published au account of au elopement and marriage ou the steamer Grey Eagle, which our readers will remember. A Miss Mary Roberts was attending the Catholic school at Owensboro, Ky., and a young man by the name of Uruce won her affections and made engagements to marry her, but her father objected . to the union. A friend of Bruce, by the name of Jenkins, with his sifter, vUited the ' school on the pretence of making arrangements for her to become a pupil. As soon . as Miss Roberts discovered him, she left the '
school room and got into a back that was I ia readiness, and the three drove off a few miles down the river, and bailed the steamer ! Grey Eagle, and took passage to Kvansville, j where Bruce was awaiting their arrival. A i mairiage license was soon procured by an old gentleman on the boat, who passed as tue girl s father, accompanying Bruce to the clerk's office and giving his assent to the i marriage. A minister was sought and the twain were soon made one flesh on board the boat , as she laid at the wharf. The happy couple then came to Louisville on the same boat j and went from thence to Henry county, the home of the bride's father. It appears that Roberts, the father of the girl, has sued the young man, Jenkins, lay- j ing the damages at $r,000, and the Sister ot the Catholic School at Owensboro bad also brought suit against the parties for in- j vading her premises in the manner in which they did. The matter is to be tried in the Circuit Court at Louisville, and will no ; doubt be an interesting affair. ittw Albany Ledger. " Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin cur rency is now quoted at ten per cent, discount. The workingmen who Buffer from this depreciation in the currency most recollect that they voted for it.'" We copy the above enrious financial item trorn the Pittsburgh Post of Wednesday. ; Will that paper be good enough to explain j how antl when the workingmen voted for this depreciation of "Illinois, Iowa and ' Wisconsin currency ?" One of them at our elbow declares he has no recollection that any such question was involved in any canI vass, near or remote, and our own recollecj tionis that nobody voted either for the failure i of crops in the Northwest, from which that section has not yet had time to recover, or for the system of long extended c -'lit, the high price of slaves, and extravagance generally, in the South, which, since their : threat of secession and repudiation of Northern debts, has caused all the financial trouble now impending over that section, and over the creditor portion of the country also. Fiat. Din. DREADFUL ACCIDENT AT WENONA, ILL.— The Galesburg (Illinois) Democrat of the 10th says: We have been shown a letter to a gentleman of this city, giving an account of a lamentable accident which occurred at Wenona, Marshall county, Illinois, on the occasion of the Republican celebration at that place on the 10th inst. The anvil used as a substitute for the cannon, being made of cast iron, burst into pieces, the fragments flying among the crowd. One of them struck a young man named Philip Lamble on the thigh, and shattered it so bad that he died in three hours. Several others were wounded. P. Beckwith had his jaw badly cut from chin to ear; A. Beckwith had his thigh badly torn ; A. Hammet was injured on the thigh; G. Hammet was slightly injured about the hip ; J. M. Hunt's right leg was torn off between the ankle and knee, so as to require amputation; Mr. Robert Ervin was hurt, but not seriously. ———<>——— THE GREATEST OIL DISCOVERY YET.— Western Virginia promises to divide with Slippery Rock Creek, and the districts up the Alleghany, the attention of oil speculators. In Clark county, some time since, a Mr. Karns sunk a well one hundred and fifty feet, and is now taking out fifteen barrels a day. Mr. Rathbone, from whom Karns leased, subsequently sunk a well himself, and in twelve hours after "ile'' was struck it filled a cistern containing one hundred and thirty barrels of forty gallons each, but this is not all. They have discovered a vein of oil coal one thousand feet thick, in a mountain on Hugh's river, a tributary of Kanawha. This coal, when put on a shovel and held over the fire, melts into oil, so that the discovery is an important one. A good deal of excitement prevails in the neighborhood, and "ile " sites are leing disposed of rapidly at fabulous prices. ———<>——— Ii.LiNoia Soutukkn Rau.roaii. We are pleased to learn that the iron for twentyfive miles of this road has been purchased, and is being delivered at this point. Already 130 tons has arrived, and the balance is on the way. The chairs, ties, ami spikes sufficient to lay down the amount of iron purchased, are being delivered. The contractors, the Messrs. Stanton, tin pushing the work ahead as rapidly as possible, and if the individual stockholders along the line of the county and city corporations that have pledged aid, will corpe forward and a-sist, this itniforlaut enterprise will bo foHipleled at an early day Vin. Oar. FltKE SPKKCII ASl TU FUOITIVK St.AVK Law. The New York Commercial Advertiser says : "If the return of slaves is 10 be enforced at the North, as it ought to be, let freedom of sjieech be respected and protected at the South, M also it ought to be. Why cannot both sections meet on this common trround of mutually respect in.' the ! provisions of the Constitution ? Surely a ; white man's life taken by niub law in Texas ! or Alabama, for expressing or merely holding an opinion, is of as much value to him ! and his friends as the body of h Hrtvtl to his i owner." (Jallant CosntTCT or Fonu American Garibalpiaxs. The four Americans, Chas. . Carroll Hicks, of Columbus, Ohio; Frank Maney, of Nashville, Tennessee; Henry X. j Spencer, jr., of Pennsylvania, and Alfred Van Benthuvsen, of Louisiana, serving in , Garibaldi's army, have recently distinguish- , j ed themselves greatly by their military exi ploits, and have received the special praise I of the Dictator. Rare Game. An otter, full grown, with 1 ! a heavy, rich coat of fur, in vigorous i health, was killed last week ou the bank of I ! the little creek at Slickaway, seven miles j from Lexington. The Observer nnd Re- j ! porter says he is of fine size, measuring from head to tail 4 feet 5 inches, and round ; the body 20 inches. He was found in coin- j pany with four others, who made their es- j cape by " hunting their holes." Lou. Jour. , The Electoral Vote.
