EVANSVILLE, IND.
t - - aiw ilW fijiniu s TH Panic. rYe say to our friends particularly to j - ' Fat tiler frieuds, through our Weekly panot to ,be alarmed by the prevailing lie. Matters it is true do look rather scrii. Banks are breaking ; stocks have maJially declined ; trade is stagnated. There 00 demand for produce except for local isumption. Prices have fallen. The Itom seems to have been knocked out of 1 stock banks of Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, ssouri, and other States, and the list of r money ia reduced very low. 1 1 is hard get bold of currency on which there is no count Bankable money all seems sudnly to have hid itself out of sight, and preciated currency is all that can be laid .Id of. Confidence amongst business vnen seems be lost. The public are trembling for ir of greater disasters yet to come. Encprise is checked, and the prospect for the ming winter is one of great suffering aongst the poor and " tight times ;' aongst the independent in this world's ods. V )i O ro ia all tliia t onrl 9 A to rva tn r aa-iw Ui cm hii.i IV viiu a k n v wv ive another general crash like that of 357-8? These questions are frequently iked. We think the end of the present disastrous ate of things not the "bitter end,:' for tat we are feeling now, but the bright and osperous end will come, if not before certinly by next Spring. Our justification in pressing this opinion we ftad in several irenmatances : 1. The smallnesa of the debt of the orth, and the splendid crops with which jis section has been blessed the present ear. AI30 the economical habits formed y the hard times of late years. 2. The manifestation of faith in the ear future shown by the Boston and few York bankers recently. Our late disatcbes from these points announce that he bankers of those cities instead of conracting as usual during a panic, ceasing to oan and forcing the payment of debts due hem, to the ruin of their debtors have iken the'most liberal, course ever pursued n this country, and have discounted to the xtent of millions of dollars in order to reieve their customers and move the immense -iuaniiiit-s of produce that are stored in .he warehouses between the West and Kast. Think of it ! The bankers of New Vork, proverbially the most nervous and 'scary '' financiers on the continent and ;he bankers of Boston instead of " con.ractiug " when the panic waxes hottest, 'expand " U a vast amount. What does this'iudicutu ? coutideuce in the near future, or despair. Every man must see that those ski. lini tiu. meters of the East have confidence, it no one else has. They know very well that (so tui us the N'ortb is cou-ivrne-ii) she is pretty well out of debt not estun-tiing the bonded debt for railroad iron and internal improvements," not yet due- Miid has plenty of wealth in reserve in. which to pay her current expenses. Tiieietore, they have confidence, ana there ia plenty of reason fjr it. In regard to the prospect of secessiou aud a gcutral political break-up, there is a dift'einreot' opinion, according to the parties to which men belong. Those New York nnd Boston financiers are the very men, of all others, to believe in a serious disaster to lilts Union if there were auy ground for it. . Aitseem to bold very lightly the prevalent clamor. Why should we, who believe there is not going to lie any dissolution, get frightened at shadows ? Let farmers, mechanics, manufacturers, merchants, miners and others keep quiet, live prudently but not parsimoniously, hope for the best, have faith in the future, attend closely to business, and all will come out right yet. It ia impossible that there should b any general distress. On the contrary, there is abundant reason to believe that the North and West are in better Condition than ever before. How tin Klecllou la CouautiimttUd. Some of our readers may like to know in what manner the vote given for Messrs. Lincoln and Hamlin on the 6th of November, through the electors, is to be ca.t for the President and Vice President according to law. The successive steps in the election of electors for President and Vice President of the United States to be taken after the November election are as follows : First By the act of 17:2 these electors are to meet on the first Wednesday in December after, in their respective Slates, to cast their votes. The following proceedings of the Electoral Colleges we take from the National Intelligencer : The Electors of President and Vice President in the several States are required by law ot Congress to meet on the first Wednesday of December next, which is the fifth day of the month, at such place as may be designated by the States respectively. The commissions to the Electors must first have been transmitted to them by the Governor. The Electors, having met on the day designated, must proceed to vote by ballot for President aud Vice President of the United States, one of whom ir.u-1 be a resident of a different State from themselves. They must then make three copies of all j rs. unvoted for Presideut aud Vice President, which must be sirued by all the Electors voting oue to be seut to the President of the United States Senate by a .messenger, one to be transmitted to the same person by mail, and one to be placed in the hand of

Considering the disadvantages which have of late years surrounded this great public work, and the fears of its failure great, it has nevertheless done a very considerable business the past season; and if crops and times generally are as good next year as this, its capacity will increase and the revenue be materially augmented. —<Ft. In view of this important fact we have a suggestion to make to country merchants: Impress the fact upon farmers within your reach aud it will be ea.y In persuade them to keep white and yellow corn separate when puking. It can be done with very little extra trouble, and supposing even that only two or three cenis are thus added to the value ol each bushel, just calculate what it will amount to in the euormous crop wliich Illinois is to barvet this vear. The Chicago board of trade will have, 11 grade mt unmixed corn, both of white and yellow. Now n the time to prepare for it.
