BSWe have been tailed upon recently to record the demise ot quite a number of newspapers, some of them old and apparently well established journals, but which were evidently not " paying institutions," or they would net thus give up the ghost. The panic and hard times now setting in will probably operate fatally on mauy other papers, though we hope the great majority will be able to weather the storm. At ht-.i the newspaper business is a precarious one, and we do not wonder i.hat so mauy persoiis engaged in it are desirous of exchanging it for some occupation more remunerative. In no business is the labor harder and more wearing on the eyes and general healthful in none is the compensation, in money and comfort, for the means invested and the work done, so meager. Printers woik. tor t glory " exclusively, and all they get o' that you can put in your eye in feet, is already "all in your eye. '
The President ' View. The following we pet from th Washing ton correBDoadence of the Cincinnati Ga zette : A very important letter has appeared in i the New York Evening Post, written by a correspondent, who assumes to know somethin? of the views of the President elect. From hia outgivings it appears, first, that Mr. Lincoln is determined to conduct his Administration upon the principles enunciated in his various speeches. From them he will not be driven by threats of any kind. Secondly, be will make no public declaration of his views until as President elect it liecomes his duty and privilege to do so. Thirdly, he approves of Jackson's course in regard to nullification in 1832, and will imitate his predecessor's action, with due regard to the changed circumstances of the case. Fourth, he will not , bother himself with all the small appointments, as some of his predecessors have dene, but will leave (hem to the heads of departments. Ho will admit no man into his Cabinet who is not unreservedly a Uc- I nmhlimn. Such is the irocrramine, which j upon the authority quoted, it appears Lincoln has laid down for his action. Mr tX" Cincinnati has fully resumed her former position as the Exchange market of the West, rates haying advanced at Chicago and .-'t. Louis to a standard always fixed by an inflated, unhealthy anil unreliable currency. Thus we find exchange on New York plenty and dull here at an average of J prem. for our currency, while it is secure and firm at St. Louis at 1 prem. and at Chicago at 2 prem. lOr their currency. Such banks, or we should say, such banking as is permitted in Missouri and Illinois, tax the community to an extent they are not aware of. When a man takes a dollar bill out there he gets 98 or O'Jc. This depreciation of the currency, for that's what it is, though it is called a premium on exchange, would amount, ou the exchange of this city alone, to $1, 500,000 per annum. We suppose it is safe to put the cost of inflated banking in Illinois and It iagouri at S2,uoo,ocu a year. This is borne by the people. If they were taxed Ui.'-t amount directly for the support of banks, llwto would be a rebellion. When St. Louis and (Thicajjo adopt the clearing house system, tve Eh ill see the end of this, but not until then . Paddock' Bank Mirror, Sorrn Carolina Impatient kor Cokucion South Carolina vapors about calling out ii 'ps. What does she want of troops ' Tin v cost money and she has none of thai to spare. Great Britain knows her interests too well to embark in such a venture, and France, under (he iuspi ration of the crafty Louis Napoleon, will not be ready to uuti. ipale her rival in order lo secure the doubtful enAlingetify of a trade with the Southern States. IJeutletnen closely connected with the British Legation, in thi-i city, who have studied the workings of our institutions, and who know precisely where this Disunion movement will end, do not scruple to say that lha Ministry of the Qneen will never, in any way, extend the slightest synipnthy towards the pro. slavery leaders, who are now lo.ikin to the turniation ot au independent Southern Confederacy. tiftj, Mr. 1). 1111:13 passeil VickabtMtg on Friday lust, on his way to his plantajlioa in Washington eouiilv. Mr. Douglas was in excellent health. He was to remain on hii plantation for a few days, when he would be joined by his family and proceed to Chicago. 5t Lou,s Iitp., 21-1. The Lotiisvii.c .lournal well says: The most accursed traitors to the South are those now within the lower Atlantic States who are forwarding exaggerated and mendacious dispatches lo the North. If North and South Carolina will include among those liable to penalties for incendiary publications the utterers of these monj gtroiis atrocities, we Mini I rejoice most heartily. Gen. Cass has been a heavy ..-er in i-tooks, and at the last Cabinet meeting was to excited by his losses as to cause quite an explosion by his denunciation ot tlie EKs anionists.
1HK r ASSPORT feYSTEM IN bTBOPE BEINC. Abolished. The Swedish goverumeut Las taken a step in advance of all continental system. Anybody hereafter may enter Swedish territory, travel through or leave it without any molestation from the civil authorities or any police interrogating him, j as if he suspected the stranger as being a criminal. Russia has also modified her passport system. These steps show that Europe is getting tired of her absurd restrictions upon free intercourse between the people of different countries. The interests of trade and the convenience of the world require that travel shall be free over all the countries.
The Helena (Ark.) Shield thinks the talk of disunion all foolishness. It says the only question the Southern men have to answer is : " Will you vote to destroy a Government which has given you protection in your life, liberty, and property, and has made us the first nation of the earth, simply because a section of the Union 1ms elected a man President, when that man is elected according to the pro virions of a Constitution formed when almost (he pntlre nation was slaveuolding.' Ufcipkooity. - -The South Carolina papers advertise that Kentucky money, at 5 per cent, discount, will be taken, payable in South Carolina money. Such an exhibition of financial oenerosity deserves a return, and we are authorized to say that the j provision merchants of Louisville are dis- 1 posed to be equally generous. They will sell potatoes, Jtc., for South t'arolina money at pur, that is, bushel for bushel. Bring on your money. Louisville Democrat Two Prkhidkstiai. Candidates Bankrupt. A Washington letter-writer says : Douglas, whose Chicago speculations are supposed to have made him enormously wealthy, is embarrassed beyond hope of redemption. Breckinridge, whose large investments in the West conveyed an idea of riches, was impoverished by the failure of the Ohio Trust Company, in which he was a heavy stockholder, and now, though the candidate of the slave interest, owns neither farm nor slave. Tnnra Deaths From Diptukria in onk IIolsk. There have been several cases of that terrible disease, diptheria, in Newport, Ky., during the pa3t lew week3. Ofi Monday, in the house of a German, residing; on Patterson street, three little girl?, aged from seven to ten years, were lying dead of that malady, they having been fatally seized by it within a few hours of each other. Lou. Jour. V. xtensive Votino. In looking over our returns of the election in Iowa, we notice that three counties gave twelve votes each. Sioux county recorded nine votes for Douglas, two for Lincoln and one for Bell. Cherokee county gave Lincoln nine aud Douglas three. Iluena Vista gave Douglas and Lincoln six.
