Office Seeking. The Springfield (111.) correspondents of the Cincinnati Commercial and St. Louis Republican, who, by the way, write very much as If they were one aud the same person, give us fc"ftw itcm3 of interest irom the residence of the President elect. Doth correspondents admit that the applicants for office under the new administration are not near so numerous as has been supposed. Neither is Mr. Lincoln annoyed very much in this particular, through the Post Office. Few prominent politicians have aa yet called upon him, Mr. Covode ofW Pennsylvania Ix-iug the only eastern politician of any celebrity who has visited Mr. Lincoln, and he only remained a few hours. This state of things seems especially to surprise the correspondents aforesaid, who, we should jndge from the tone of their communications, were antii ipating a perfect rush to Sprinejield by hopeful aspirants from all sections, who, like a horde of hungry beggars, would besiege the residence of thfl Preaidenf elect with the cxp etationot eliciting a promise from him in their favor We attribute this scarcity of applicants for office at Springfield to the strong confidence of the people in Mr. Lincoln's firmness and integrity as a man. They believe that a pilgrimage to the Capital of the " Sucker State" would only liavo a tendency to increase the family of " suckers '' without nt also improving the chances for success. We doubt not, an impertinent application at , this juncture when Mr. Lincoln is overwhelmed with business in completing the arrangements for his incoming administration, would be as good u way to consign one's prospects to the tomb of the Capulets as could be devised, l'atriots who are anxious to share thejiurdcu; of the new Administration are sufficiently numerous, but they all hare the sagacity to see that the present is not the proper occasion ou which to urge their claims. IMPORTANT SFKKCH. Senator Tmmliiitl Sicak tor Air. Ltiicvlu at Springfield, lit. The Pulley of he New Adinl ulst ral Ion reelecting Slavery anl Srttmloll pneiiHil. Spkibghkld, 111., Mbr. 20. Kas. Coil. Setiator Trumbull, after congratulating the assembled Republicans on - Ihcir victory and eulogizing Jit. Lincoln, W sftll "Mr. Lincoln, although the candidate of the Uepublican putty, as Chief Magistrate, will neither belong to that or any other party. When inaugurated, be will lie the President of the country and tiie w hole country ; and 1 douht not tall be as ready to defend und protect Ike State in trhich he has not received a solitary vote, againtt any tncnmciimi nt upon its constitutional right', as tiit one in which he has received the Imgetl majority. While Ihey, by whoso Totes he hv.a beeu designated us Chief Magislralu of the Republic, will expect him to maintain and carry forward the principles on which be was elected, they know i hat in doing so, no encroachment will i made ou the reserved rights of any of tip States. They know that the Federal rutuent is one of delegated powers IhJt it can do nothing except the authority tor the act can be found in the iiibtmne;i. which cteuUal it, and that all puwci Dot jonferred are reserved to the States or tb people of the States. VVheu their po. ll. cal opponents have charged the UrpubliC.us with Abolitionism, or attributed to them a desire to interfere with stavery in the States, or some fanatic has im-isted that they ought to do so, the reply has invariably been, that the people who made the federal Government did not think proper to confer on it such authority, and it has therefore no more right io t.ieddle with slavery tn a State than it has to meddle with serfdom tn Russia, nor are the people of non-slave-holdi iii: Stalest, hi any way responsible tor slavery in the States whieh tolerate it, because on that question they are to each other as independent governments. "I have labored in and for the Republican organization, with entire confidence that whenever it should ! in power, each und all of Out States would he left m as complete control of their own affairs respectively, anl at as perfect liberty to choose and employ their own means of protecting property nud ptc:;fcrving peaco and order, within their respective limits, as they have ever been nrnl. i any administration. Those who have voted for Mi . Lincoln hava expected, and still expeet this, and they would not have voted tor him, had they expected otherw ise. 1 regard it as extremely fortunate, for the peace of the whole country", that this point, upon which the Republicans have been so long and so persistently mhirep! csrntcd, is now to be brought to a practical lest and placed beyond the possibility of a doubt.--it should be a matter of rejoicing ti, fill true Republicans, that they will now have an opportunity of demonstrating to their political adversaries, and the world, that they arc notjor interfering vith the iloimsta' tn: Millions of any of the States, and are not the advocates of negro equality or amalgamation with which political demagogues have so often charged them. When this is shown, a reaction will assuredly take place, in favor of Republicanism. The Southern mind even will be satisfied. The rights of Northern men will be respected, and the fraternal feting ezittiny in oliieii times when men front all parts of tfif. country went forth toyi thcr to battle for a common cause, against a common OMM it til he r stored. iisuuiouists yev e, of whom unfortunaiely there have been a tew in the country, tor some years, understand this, and are now in hot basin to get out ol the U uiou, precisely Ueeanse. they perceive, tfury cannot much hunger maintain an ajprehewioii among the Southern people titat their lunaif and insult and lines an to he cti-dang-red by I lie 'action J the federal lioi'emment. With ench, now or never is themaxira ; hence they seek to inflame the public mind by misreprecuting the objects and purposes of the Republican party, with the hope of precipitating the Southern States into a positi6n from w hich they cannot, without dishonor, afterwards secede, well knowing if they delay till after the uew Administration is inaugurated and tested, it w ill furnish no cause for their complaints. Secession is an impracticability, or rather an impossibility. Ttie Constitution provides no way by which a Stale may withdraw from the I'oion no way for the dissolution of the Government. It creates the general Government interferes but little with the individual rights of the citizens except for protection; it is chiefly fell in its benefits and its blessings, and not in its exaction. "If every federal officer in South Carolina were to resign and their offices remain rcant, and its convention declare the State
out of the Union, it would all amount to little except to iiicoavecijle the oitize, o t that State. 3o long as the State did not
latertere with tie coll the sea boards, the peo of the fnion would tic convenieuctd. What, i lOl. revenue on ; eJplher portions lie in the least in- i the South Carolina , army to do when raised ? whom is it to ; fight ? manifestly if it commences a war ou the U. S. officers engaged in collecting the revenue, it becomes thu aggressor. Thi j would be Revolution, and making war i without a cause, for South Carolina makes no complaint against the present revenue laws. Is she prepared for this ? To become the aggressor I The only use I can see lor her "minute men'' is, that they will enable the j cople the more readily to suppress any uprisings in their midst, which their misrepresentations of the purposes of the Republicans may have encouraged. She complains that the fugitive slave law is not executed in some of the States. Thi.-, if true, the whole country know.i to be a sham, so far as South Carolina is concerned. She is so situated that no slave can escape from her limits into free states. However much (ause the lairder slave states may have to complain of the escape of their negroes into the f ree states, it is clear South Carolina can have no such complaint. In her resolves she professes to be preparing to defend herself against encroachments on her rights. Let her adhere to this policy and not attempt to dictate to other states what they shall do,. and tio collision will occur, lor no encroachment will lie made." The speaker expressed the opinion that the disunion feeling is greatly exanerated, and that not all the suporters of Breckinridge are Oisunionists. He asserted emphatically that should the Diannionista succeed in overcoming the I'nion men of Ihe South, and plunge the country into civil war, an oierwielminy cry that the Union must ami shall be jrreserved, n-ouhl arise inall parts of the land, and war woultl then come home to the traitors. The speaker concluded by enumerating the beneficent measures likely to be accomplished under a Republican government, and expressed confidence that it will give peace and well-being to the country. Hamlin will meet Lincoln in Chicago, where a grand conclave of Republican leaders of the Northwest will be held. Lincoln goes to Chicago to-morrow. Trumbull's speech was inspired by him, and expresses his views in full. V. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. PEOPLE'S GALLERY. "S cure the dliA'lww afa the rmbritAnco l.wir, Let nature copy V vJ which nature made.
