EVANSVILLE, IND. IUKSDA..Y alOUNIKG NOVEMBER 1". Bougla at. Xew Orleans. SenatorDonglas, after having canvassed veral ot tUe Soutbera States on his clecaneering tour, having his pockets picked, is wife's jewelry stolen, being egged, and asted by the democratic press as a scctiont candidate and mi abolitionist, has rought up at the city of Xew Orleans. Of ourse he had a large crowd to wait upon im, much enthusiasm, and was betrayed ito a speech. He had, of course, to talk little about his great principle ; but told 1 is audience there was no cause for dissoluon in the election of Lincoln. He exre3sed great commiseration for the I'resient elect, placed, as he thinks him, in such n impotent and unfortunate position.
'ruly the Senator has a tender heart, and dies in high places, aud intelligence aud relr. Lincoln will be ranch consoled by the ! nnement silting in inglorious ease by their
i i. . , vs. u -j iin im, m BJ islll oln baa a minority in both houres of 'on- ' ,ress, and can do nothing unless approved ' y the conservatives, and (he shoald have dded) disunion ists. He has no power but j o appoint officers, says the Senator, and be Senate has a check upon him there. j lYe have heard it suggested before, that the Senate would refused to ratify the noraina- I ion3 of the President, and thus block the ,v heels of government, but Mr. Douglas is he first public man of importance who has ;iven it a publication. If it is the purpose If the Senate to take this revolutionary jtep, it will meet with the overpowering condemnation of the people, and will be compelled to recede, or be driven from their places. If Mr. Douglas intended to ay that the Senate would, as they have j I 'ncrotnfm-P eyereUe mere v a diBerimination as to the competency, fitness, and honesty of appointees, their course would be j
justifiable, but it .will not do to refuse to j overland expedition to han .lose, to pass me ...... , , honevmoon at ono of the delightful retreats ratify nominations simply on party grounds j ,,ey ft fc ,h,u Mrs it would not be tolerated. j i,3njti. wm retire from the stage immedi If there is occasion for sympathy eveu ntely upon the completion of her present euTCl.orp thero ia (i tmre rennblienn minority in i uHEtments on the Atlantic side. It seems
Congress, what a vast volume of sympathy would be necessary to meet the emergency 1 if Judge "Douglas had been elected, with not a single supporter in tthe Senate and only six or eight in tho House. Ve are of the opinion that the sympathising Senator would exchange places with the President elect, unfortunate and impotent as is the position in his estimation. The Senator in his speech talks about the election of an abolition President, when no man knows better than he that Mr. Lincoln is not an abolitionist. His thirty rears association assures him that Mr. Lincoln is a calm, conservative, old-fashioned politician. not given to any of the srus of extreme ! utested 1 anti-siaverv men : ami in tne notiy co Illinois canvii : of 1858 be was made fully acquainted wi;h pis views on the present aspect of the slavery qn lion. Mr. Douglas knows that Mr. Lincoln is not an abolitionist, and it was mere demagogical catering to the il. I i ted views of his hearers when he intimated any such charge. We predict that lie ;.ew President may count on the suppili of the Illinois Senator on all questions of importance, notwithstanding this speech, for he comprehends the iiaport of the late Northern thunder. ISP Wouldn't it be awful if Old Abe should, like Harrison and Taylor, "shuttle off this mortal coil '" namliu would become President, who is deadly hostile to protective tariffs, river and harbor improvements, national banks, homesteads, aud all that sort of thing Hamlin, like Tyler, was oncu a Democrat, and it is shrewdly suspected that some of the smell still attaches to his garments. If Old Abe is not very rich he had better get his life insured for the benefit of his family. Experience shows that Presidents elected by the opponents of the Democrat ie party don't live very long after getting into office. What purpose the New Albany Ledger has in view in throwing out such intimations as the above we are at a loss to conceive. Those unacquainted with the character of the paper might inter that it desired to bring about the very thing it seemingly hinta at in a jesting manner. BThe Republicans of Terre Haute had a monster jollification meeting on Monday nightlast. Almost the entire city was illuminated, the streets were thronged with an enthusiastic and happy populace, and the Wide-Awakes, with Iheir lamps brightly burning, paraded the principle throiighfarea, shouting their peans over the glorious victory just achieved. Addresses were delivered by Col. Nelson, Hon. R. W. Thompson. RN. Hudson' B. B. Moffat, of Terre Haste and Hon. Richard Yaryan of Richmond, Wayne county. Mr. Thompson pledged himself to support the administration of ..-iu i i , i . - ' out -vue, ami euiogi.eu nun as one ol Cod's noblest works -an honest man. We are glad to see that Mr. Thompson thus early gives iu his adherance to a Republican administration We doubt uot, others, who supported Mr. Bell, will follow his example. BooNvn.Lt, Iud., Nov, 13, 1800. Journal Co : Old Warrick comes in tor her mcde of credit in cLanging to some ex. tent the heretofore Democratic majority in the Pocket. Here are her figures : Hendricks majority over Lane VI 1 Douglas's majority over Lincoln 3'J, a reduction of 676. Lincoln's gain in positive strength over Lane 107. We feel good over the result in this county and juhilant over the final result. On Thursday night the 15th inst we are going to light up our town Wo expect Mr. Veatch to addres i us ou that evening. We should be pleased to have you nnd many from your city to be with us. " Wauuick. It has been proposed by the Republicans ot Xew York, to celebrate their vic tory by roasting: a large elephant somewhere in the center of the State, and inviting all the people. If they do, it will be the first time that a butcher has killed one body and got two trunks to cut up. We would" like to be present at the " mammoth " barbecue.
