the Cm. Price Current, Nov. 8, 1800. Business and Financial Summary of tne Past Week. The money market keeps easy, with a fair demand. There is a continued good demand from the regular banking houses for first class busiuesd paper, at 1012 per cent., and not more has been offered upon any day than they were prepared to take. The future, as regards the West, viewed in what aspect it may be, is exceedingly favorable, and an abundance of raoney, with general confidence, seems to be the leading features clearly indicated. The balance of trade must be largely in our favor during the next twelve months, which will keep down the rates of exchange. The offerings of time drafts on the Kast or South continue light, and rates remain at 810 for Eastern, and lo12 for New Orleans. The demand for fight Exchange has been quite moderate during the week, and the market ruled dull, though rates are not generally lower. An improved demand for gold, and rates are rather firmer. We continue to ijuote uncurrent money at l(aj dis." lor Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa, and 1 dis. for Missouri buying rates. The weather has bi-cn quite pleasan during the week. No Irost of consequence; indeed the fall has been unusually mild, the temperature above the average. The range of temperature during the week was 45 to 58. Flonr though somewhat irregular has been held with firmness, and in a few cases were forced wales made ; the demand has been moderate, and good deal has been shipped to the south by fl.itbo.nt, so that there has been no increase of stock during the week. Superfine sold as low as :?4 CO 4 TO, but these rates were rather below the views of holders ; so that whilst round lots, if forced upon the market, would not have brought more; purchases to an extent could not have been made at less than $4 804 00 for superfine. The range for fair to good extra 5 005 '25, and lotfancy brands $5 fi0G 25. Wheat has been offered sparingly, and there being a good export demand from the South, prices advanced folly lc per bushel, closing at 1 101 16 for choice red and white. New corn comes in rather slowly, and prices advanced to 36c. Old is nominal, none of consequence arriving. The receipts of oats have been large, and prices declined 2c per bushel. closiHg at 28c for prime in bnlk. .'0,0()0 hush were received during the week. Uye declined to C364c. A good demand for barley at 85.!0c for good prime fall and Canada spring, the latter selling as high as fall. Whisky advanced to 16 last Wednesday, and ruled steady at this rate all the week. Cheese declined Ac owing to large receipts, hut there was a good demand at the decline, and some 11,000 boxes sold during the week at 89i. Batter lc higher, owing

to a light .supply.

new sugar and 50 do re received during the iniuie at 8r8i: for i es, but dealers bnv-

rnolaese? is dull at 41c. Generally speaking the demand for groceries has been quite limite.l except coffee, which is in good demand tor the higher grades, which c ontinue scarce H. B-'atrtS ft Co., dealers in jewelry, and Devon ft IJockwnnd, in fancy dry goods, SUSpei.ii-.-d Monday. The former have made an assignment, and llie latter sold out to one of their largest creditor;;. D. fc Et, hare not. been in good standing since 1 5557. In the provision market there hap not been much done. All the old mesl pork in the market was sold out at 18, the lore part of the week, and small sales new mess are making to till orders at. .ls. The demand for bacon has been quite limited, and the market dull Hnd prices lower. Slroul ders have been offered at 8A, and ! idps at 111, but thore having orders to till want to bay at a quarter of a cent less. In new meat there doe"? not reem to be any desire to operate. Green hams are in demand at 9c from the ham Mirers, mi ShbhldeiS and sides are held at GfS . cir from the block, but are not Baleable at over 6 357fc. a good deal doing in box meats, at mc lor Cumberland rut ; 8Jc for long ribbed, ! bfor liort do , 9tjc for clear do., and 9r tinlong clear, lo be delivered any time before the middle of December. There is a moderate demand for new lard, in small lots, at 1 lc. The stock of old bacon in this market is Rbout 2,700 hhds., of which 1,000 hhds. are sides and 150 do. clear sides. 1 1 is estimated that there is about one million pounds of ice cured meat also in the Citv. Shipments of flour amounting lo :;,i(" bble. were made direct to Liverpool via the Baltimore ft Ohio Railroad at SI VorSt ho per bbl. during the week. i'ork packing commenced in this city last Friday, and on Monday there were six houses in operation. The weather has been quite favorable, and should it so continue, packing operations will be general in another week. $V may be set down as the opening price for good hogs, say those averaging 220 lbs. net, and this rate was puid for two or three lots Saturday and Monday; though for delivery in the future, even a week ahead, this price would not be paid and good hogs are offered tor the last half ot November at $fl on, and the first half of December at t; 50, and but few can be found willing to pay these rates. The opening price is, however, SI 25 per cental higher than that of 1850; S7.!c higher than that of 1858; $1 50 higher than that of 1357; 70c higher than that of 1856, and 1 50 higher than that of 1855. Now ujiou what basis is it that this extraordinary high value of pork hi predicted ? is a moat interesting inquiry just at this time, when thirty million dollars are about being invested iil this article. If we understand the prefacing sentiment, this basis is composed of the followiig expeetations : A largely increased demand from England forbacwhn increased demand from the Southern States, because of the failure of t toe com crop and the consequent impossibility of feeding hogs or cattle there; and last, but uot least, a falling off in the supply iu those States which usually furnish the surplus of the article. Now with reganl to the foreign demand, supposing It should be fifty per cent, greater than that of hist year, it would he but equal to the product ol 25,000 hogs ; and then supposing the Southern demand should increase ten per ceut., this would be but equal to 35,000 hoa. Now, if there are Stock hogs enough there is n sufficiency of corn in Ohio and Indiana to fatten 20 per cent, more hogs than were fattened in these States last year, and thirty per ceut. moro in Iowa and Illinois, which would make a total increase in those four States of, say, in round numbers, 472,000 head. But in Kentucky, Tcunesfee and Missouri, there Trill be a decrease of, say, 120,000 head, to

make 180,000 head, and thie being deducted

from the above eatimt J '.ucrea.se. wonid leave a net increase of 2!:.'Vo : that i.-, in case the scarcity of ttock hogs does not pre- : veut it ; so, ttien,' the probability of sustabling those high prices turns simply upon the question of a scarcity of stock hogs in the four States named. Until last year, the S'jsult had 3'jov n that , when corn is abundant aud cheap, and hogs high, there have been always enough of them , found to make a large crop. We say this has never failed nnlil last yotfr, and then, only in Illinois. Corn was abundant in that State last year, and yet there was a falling off in the hog crop of 87,000 head, as shown by the packing returns, which led us to suppose that owing to the uncertainty j of the lives of those animal consequent ', upon the hog cholera, the raising of them had been abandoned. in many sections of I ' the country, and that, consequently, they had really become comparatively scarce ; : this theory, however, cannot be regarded as j I fully established, so that the obvious conelusion we must arrive at is, that the pres ! ent prices are based upon what must be reregarded as a bAre probability ; and should : this prove to be incorrect sixty days hence, j I how disastrous will be the result! Again, j unusually high prices must be obtained during the spring and summer months tor pro- i I visions, in order not only to pay a small profit upon the investments made at the i current prices, but even to pay the actual

i first cost ; and as it is a well established 1 fact that high j rices of pork always diminish the consumption, and more especially i when other articles of food are low, the risk

is increased very decidedly. When a capital- I j ist loans money, how careful he is about ! the security ! but pork dealers seem willing I ; to risk their all upon a bare probability at , any time; and though the last two years' experience has been well calculated to render them more careful and conservative, it ( would seem it has not, and doubtless there i are mauy who imagine that seven dollars ! per cwt. can be paid for pork, and make i I money out of it.
