HONDA T MOBBING NOVEMBER 18 Tuk female halt of American society owes a debt of soaie sort, aud a tieavv one, to the New Votk Espreas, for tbe following outburst in the shape of a reflection drawn from the just concluded visit of the I'riuce of Wales and suite. It naya : ' One thing is determined by the recent visits to this country of Prince from the Hast and from the West of the Old WorldAiui rican women have worse manners than the men. It was the woui-u who at Washington intruded upon diplomatic receptions, and sat upon the mantels in the President's mansion ; it was the women who insisted upon going to a ball at Gen. Cass's house, so that the venerable Secretary declared he ' dared not give a dinner or a matinee : it 1 was the women who thrust their notes upon Tommy. So, also it was the women who jostled and crowded upon the Prince at the j
ball at the Academy ; it was the women who got upon the -teats in Trinity Church to look at him, notwithstanding the clergymen had first requested them not to do so. There are women of all grades ; not only .such as might be supposed ignorant of good
oreeaing, i.ut such as would lie invited to the balls of the Secretary of State or could get access to the Academy of Music lust Friday. They were alike in Washington and New York ; they have displayed this ! behavior before now, at the crowded open- I tic matinees ; they do so in the omnibuses and in the railway cnr., where they demand the places of the men, and never dream of thanking them. At the North and South, at the Bast mid West, the rule is, that American women are rude the contrary is the exception."
ron
Taking CoU. A "oold"is not necessarily, 3nys the Scientific American, the result nf low or high temperature. A person may go directly from a hot hath into a cold one, or into snow even, and not take cold, tin the contrary, he may take cold by pouriug a couple of tablespoonfuls of water upon pome part of his dress, or by standing in a door, or some other opening where one part of the body is colder than another. Let it be kept in mind that uniformity of temperature over the whole body, is the first thin to be looked after. It is in the unequal heats upon the different parts of the body that produces cold, by disturbing the uniform circulation of some part. If you must keep a partially wet garment on, il would be as well perhaps to wet the whole of it uniformly. The feet are a great source of colds, on account of the variable temperatures they are subjected to. Keep these always dry and warm, and avoid d raft 9 of air, hot or cold, wet spots on the garments, and other direct causes of
unequal temperature, and keep the system braced up by plenty of sleep and the eschewing of debilitating food aud drinks, and you will he proof against a cold and its results.
A Committkkma v in School. We find the followiug good one from an authentic source. A sub-committee of a School Board not a thousand miles from the city of Lynn, were examining a class in a primary school. ue of the committee to sharpen up their writs, propounded the following: "III had a mince pie and should give twotaretfths to John, two-twelfths to Isaac, twotwelfths to Hurry, and should keep half of the pie for myself, what would there be left?" There was a profound study among the scholars, but finally one lad held up his hand as a signal that he was ready to answer. " Well, sir, what would there be left ? Speak up loud, so that all can hear," said the committeeman. " The plate," shouted the lioneful fellow.
committeeman turned red in the face.
The
while the other members roared aloud. The boy was excused from answering any more questions. An A r flict k i Family. The Portsmouth (Ohio! Tribune states that on Saturday afternoon a son of the Kev. S. I). Tompkins, rector of Christ Church in that city, while at work in a factory, was caught in the machinery, and taken out with his skull fractured, and liotu of his arms broken. The unfortunate youth is about 13 years of age. ft is hardly possible that he can survive.--About the same hour of the same day, Lewis, the oldest son, aged about 24 years, was thrown from his horse at Wheeling, Va., where he has resided for the past eight vears, and seriously injured. A telegraphic dispatch on Monday morning brought the sad intelligence that the absent one was dead.
Fatal Accident. A Scotchman by the name of John Mitchell aras killed yesterday evening at the bridge near Very's mill, about four miles north of the city, in the following manner: A derrick had been rigged and a large stone was being raised from the base of the bridge to the top, and when some distance up by some means it fell, striking the unfortunate man on the top of his head, which cracked his skull from the crown backward to his neck. He wits carried to a house near by in a stale of insensibility, and lingered from 3 o'clock l ill 11 at night, when his sufferings were relieved by death. Mitchell was about thirty-eight years of age, and is a stranger here. He lately came from Canada, and has no relatives V. -4. Ledger,
