A Cheering Indication. Next to the election of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin ai President and Vice President of the United States, no circumstance connected witu the contest just terminated, has been so gratifying to us, as the large voto palled in the border Slave States for Mr. Bell and Senator Douglas. It demonstrates far more conclusively than speeches and newspaper paragraphs, that the people of those States however mnoh they mty be excited and prejudiced against the northern States, through inflammatory appeals by designing and unscrupulous politicians when brought to the test, have a love for the I'nion deeper
a ml mnrn o 1 1 , 1 1 n rr Ihan Ilia. !".. . .... I w h j section. The result in Virginia, Kt-ntucky, T-.,., vr 1. J i ti: r i a I i CUUC3SCC, -i.i: . .nil:, nun mi isimri clean, shows that the citizens of those Stales, however odious the Republican party of the north may appear in their eyes, have, if anything, a more supreme hatred und contempt for the disunionists of the south. No one who has watched the shifting scenes of the canvass can fail to have observed that the main, and, we might add, the only thing that has defeated .Mr. Iireckinridgc in any of the Southern States, is the fact that he was made to shoulder the disgust with which the disunionisU are regarded in those States. Notwithstanding the earnest protestations of his friends (end that of it. self is an evidence of the streng'.h of the L nion sentiment in t lie souiu ) aituougu itiey repudiated all responsibility for the treasonable sentiments aud utterances of Yancey and his sympathizers, still the impression was made upon the people, that Mr. Breckinridge was in some way responsible for, and connected with, the enemies of the Union. This was sufficient. The name of Breckinridge was no longeroninipotent even ! in Kentucky. The personal popularity of tbe gifted man could not withstand the odium arising from his associations. His star has culminated and went down amid clouds of distrust. His eood luck, which had passed into a proverb, deserted him, when arrayed in hostility to the love of the people for the Constitution and the Union. J In an evil hour his ambition overleaped it- j self and precipitated him into a position j from which it will take years to extricate I himself. Ilis fate, no doubt, will prove a heacon light lo other aspiring young politicians, warning them of the rocks upon ' which his political fortunes were wrecked. ' I The friends of Mr. Bell, it is true, in most instances, took as extreme ground upon the slavery oie t'on. as those of Mr. Hreckiu- ; ridge. But wlnl they did this, they inv.tia- : ble proclaimed their b.iiri disunion in anv eineroon I of secession and ; v. Thev aflirmed I that ii'a majority of the citizens of the United Stnies preferred Abraham Lincoln for President, Ihey would acnuiesce in the choice id the people however much they disliked that choice. They would contend for their rights in the I'nion. Secession, instead of alleviating, would hut aggravate the evils anticipated upon the success of the Republican parly. Thus, while they had all the strength of the Breckinridge parly on the slavery ijuestioiu they were free from the odium necessarily attaching to tin; doctrine of secession. On the other hand the Breckinridge party, while they could not show any stronger claims for support, because ol' their faithfulness to the South on tho vexed question, '.ittered away a good portion of the campaign in defending themselves from the charges of disunion ism. That they wore so compelled to defend themselves was one of the cheering events of the canva33. But the necessity that occasioned the defeuse, was mainly instrumental iu their defeat. Thus, if we look over the canvass, we see how absurd were the attempt to frighten i the people of the North out of expressing their l.orut t convictions, through the ballot box, oh one of the most important social and economical questions that ever divided any people. Tt was clear to all that the question must be settled some day, and that the longer it was postponed, the greater would be the difficulties that would interfere to prevent a peaceful settlement. And yet a sys. tematic effort was made to intimidate, persuade, and induce the North, to shirk an expression of what the whole world knows is its feelings on this question. All these efforts failed, as any one who had faith in the sagacity or instincts of the peo ple would have foretold. Abraimm Lincoln is elected President, and a new ,hHct is to ' J be inaugurated. That the President elect will prove a conservative officer, no one who has studied the life of the man can doubt. The fact that the lander Slave States have designated their faith in the. government as administered by him will do much towards producing a harmony of feeling that would not have been the case had Mr. Breckinridge triumphed in every Southern State by an overwhelming majority. We confident- ; ly believe, that as it was with Millard Pillmore who was elected vice President with a record on the slavery question much more offensive to the South than is that of Mr. Lincoln so will it be with the President elect, aud that he will lay aside the duties of his office respected and beloved by all the conservatives throughout the Cuiou. Believing this, we have supported him earnestly and to the best of our ability; and we vet anticipate the day when those old Whigs of onr county aud the adjoining State will agree with us that our faith in the man was uol misplaced, and they will rally to the suppoit of bis administration with a unanimity and cordiality that will more than atone tor their former indid'er ence and opposition. It ia for these reasons that we are so peculiarly gratified at the result of the elections-in the border States.

from tbe southern part of Illinois make the complexion of tbe Senate n miliar r ,rr . , .. a matter of doubt. We regret to hear tbis.for it the benate should be catTied by the democrats we fear the election of U. S. Senator will be postponed for two years. It is true the House emulating the example of our illustrious House of Representatives of 1S5C-7, which chose Jesse D. Bright and Graham Fitch might elect Mr. Trumbull without the assistance of the Senate. But we ap. prebend the 1'. S. Senate, would assert that it had received new light since itgave Bright an J Fitch their seats, and would prevent Mr. Trumbull from serving. We trust the Republicans have carried tbe three other doubtful districts, viz: the 17th, Cass, Menard, Logan, Mason and Tazewell; the 22d, St. Clair and Monroe; and the 10th or McLean district. Make half a pint of soap suds with pure white soap and warm water, on rising any morning ; hut before applying it, brush the calrj well, while the hair is perfectly drv. with the very best Ilussia bristle brush Scrub back and forth With a will, let not j any portion of the surface escape. When brushing the top and front, lean forward, that the particles may fall. After this operation is finished, strike the end of the bristles on the hearth, or a board ; m hrush or flap the hair back and forth with the hand until no dust is seen to fall : then j with the bulls of the fingers dipped in the soap suds, rub the fluid into the scalp and soai) su,i3) rub the fluid into the scalp and about the roots of the hair; do this patiently and thoroughly, finally, rinse with clear water, and absorb as much of the j water from the hair as possible with a dry ; cloth ; then (after allowing the hair to dry : v, , . . , I a little more by evaporation, but not dry entirely) dress it as usual, always under all circumstances, passing the como through slowly and gently, so as not to break any one olf, or tear out any one by the roots. By this operation the alkali of the soap unites with the natural oil of the hair, and leaves it perfectly clean aud beautifully silkeu, and with cold water washings of the head and neck and ears every morning, it will soou be found that the hair will "dress" as handsomely as if " oiled to perfection;'' with the n-at advantage of conscious cleanlines-i, givinir, too, the general appearance of a greater profusion of hair than when plastered tl .t, as is the common custom. It has been recently established, iu a court of justice in the city of New York, that one of the most popular hair washes ever known was made by nddinn a l:tll alcohol, scented with a perfume, to common soap suds. —v—<>——— ——>There was a good deal of excitement in Howard county, Indiana, recently, by the announcement that gold bearing quartz had been discovered in a quarry there, which was analyzed by some chemist at Indianapolis, and found to be O. K. It soon leaked out, however, that a fellow at work in the quarry stole a piece of California quartz from a neighbor's house, and asserted that he had found it in the quarry. This piece of quartz was what was analyzed, anil found to be gold bearing. The discovery of the truth of the matter proved the quarrier a mean sort of a liar, but while the discovery was being made, the Peru Railroad Company profited considerably by an increase in the amount of passenger fares between Indianapolis and Kokomo.—<T. H. Express>. ———<>——— POPULATION OF KANSAS.—The population of the Territory of Kansas, as ascertained by the United States census, just taken, is 109,401. This does not include the Pike's Peak region, which has a population of 75,000 more. Kansas proper has, therefore, 12,000 more people than would entitle her to elect a member of Congress at the present time. There can be no doubt that, as the most stringent provision of the "English" Bill has been complied with, Kansas will be admitted into the Union as a State the coming winter. No reason can now exist for her refusal. ———<>——— Cxiorr; Asswkii or a Scnoav School (.int..- A little girl, whose parents had recently been ejected from their lodgings on account of inability to pay their rent, was at a German Sunday school, when the teachers questioned : "llavo vou read your t'aicchism V "Yes sir."
