'NEBBAY KOBNINQ NOVhMBKK 7 I So Panic In Cincinnati. there really had been any berious caust alarm on account of Lincoln's election, e would certainly have beeu signs cf a ic ia a city like Cincinnati, having enor13 financial transactions every day, and I nected largely with the South by commorties. Now listen to what the Gazette bo 3th cays in regard to the business of J previous Saturday, when two days paynts (the 3d and 4th) were crowded into ' 1 ,1qt7 T)naa thri raenlt iniAata anv rrraar aster to our material interests, as likely spring from the triumph of the Republiis? Saturday was an active day with the niters, in the way of collections. The pa- . r cf the 3d and 4th having to be taken ' re of, the lists were long, and the aggregate lount large ; but it is gratifying to be able state that, notwithstanding the effects of mc. makers to create distrust, and the assure that prevails in markets South, the siness of the day went through satisfacrily. There were no protests of conseence none at all except of some pieces of t regular paper for small amounts, that no . e expected to be paid. One house, whose i llection list covered three large pages, had ery thing paid except a note for $32. The 1 otests at other houses ranged from three to x all of the class mentioned. All this as accomplished, too, without a struggle, ere having been no pressure for loans, and it little, apparently, of that peculiar btisiess which bankers dislike so much, viz. : arrowing to pay. In fine, everything incates the continuance of a healthy money iftrket, and aside from the political noise, jeie is nothing to disturb or weaken the :nfidence of capitalists, but much to stinilale thera to prepare for an active and profnble season. ni - i . : 1 f : I nere was ucvet its iiittitnui ior u ; um l the Western country than at the present me. The finest crops that were ever k rown have been secured, and while suplies are immense, prices are fairly remuerative. At the same time we have a eavy demand for our produce. Tho weekly xports from New York show an increase o far, of eighty per cent., as compared with ist year. In consequence, foreign exhange has fallen, and specie is now steadn accumulating in the Eastern banks. The .Vest has already sent twice as mucii jrain to market as she was able to forward ast year. From Chicago alone the shipnent3 are equal to '.''.i, 000,000 bushels against ; 16,000,000 bushels to the corresponding iate in L8T!. There has been a proportionite increase at Milwaukee, Detroit and Toedo. At these four lake ports alone, the ncreaS6in the aggregate value of breadstuff?, ver last year, is $25,000,000. . And now we have a hog crop coming in At highe.r prices than was ever before currrenl at the opening of the season ; and for this surplus crop of pork the indications ire the West will realize within the next nlr.nr r .1 irp tit". Onft OOO X 1 a rrvn mart nf this surplus will go directly to Europe. If there is a:iytbing, therefore, iu tho great West for political panic-makers to work upon, we cannot jee it. The material, it seem3 to u il -s n exist except in the imagination ol crfi.v fanatics or patriotic cowards. Whatevei tbrre is, therefore, of nervousness in the money market resulting from political threats, must soon pass away, and it is not likely that this scarecrow will reqnir. any further airing after the result of tlx lection shall be announced iu the papei Vednesday morning. As already rciuati.-J, the demand for loans on Saturday v is moderate. Bankers feeling some what uuensr, were more reserved than heretofore, but still good paper was placed witho'it difficulty at 1012 per cent. The disposition to hold back is more prominent anions outside lenders than in regular banking circles, and there was only a very moderate demand for paper in the street. . ij39 The Express has a panic-making I letter from St. Louis, which says ! " It is idle to talk about Missouri's going with the Free States in case of a dissolution. She will go where her feelings and interests prompt ; and these are all with the South." We beg leave to assure The Express that Missouri is not going at ah ; she is staying, and MSataj. She ha3 over 150,000 voters, not one-tenth of whom are slaveholders : and the disproportion ia increasing every day. The slaveholders can go if they pleasn but the State and her masses do not. think of it. FIe" interest " will make ber a Free Statu within ten years. Even now, if all her slaves could be sent to Hayti or ttuinea, and the State thus made Free, her land would sell forthwith for Millions more than Land and Slaves are worth today. Her white Freemen will comprehend thete truths lotag before her Fire-eaters get her to think- of going out of the Union. T!i, above is from the N'ew York Tribune. As with Missouri, so is it with Kentucky. The larger portion of her people are not slaveholders, and if the prtjutUtt that exists against the Republican party were expelled from their minds, and they understood thereat aims of the party, manv of them would le Republicans who now oppose us. Kentucky is .-. State of extraordinary natural advantages, and would be one of the most desirable in the Union to live in, if it wore no! for its Upas tree Shivery. If every negro in the Slate were now freed and ent out of the State, and freedom declared henceforth, the rise of real estate would more than compensate the people of the commonwealth for the slaves given away. - - i.. jt , . . . . u.o .iwriuuu iv ueujousirateu 10 oe true by figures. But it is no business of people living out of the State to do more than theorize on these facts. The people of Keutucky, Missouri, and every other Slave State of course have the sole management of their own affairs witbc-it extraneous interference. These matters Vi.l be talked about and discussed in future right amongst their own people, and the day will come in less than twenty years when Kentucky will have adopted some policy to gradually rid her. self of this great incubus which is crushing out her natural advantages and retarding her prosperity. A vote of 3,000 or 4,000 for Lincoln and Hamlin will be one of the 6rst hopeful signs of Kentucky's regeneration. If that vote reaches 5,000 we f hall oot he astonished. If a vote could be had by tmllot, so men could vote their sentiments without being proscribed by an unjust public sentiment, the Republican vote io tbat State this year would bn numbered by tens of thousanjj.

Tub city of Cincinnati is hereafter to be lighted by gas from dark to dawn, moon or no moon. This is ahead of any other city except New York. 6tf" N'iphon," the name given by the Japanese to their country, means " rising of the sou." They know nothing of the word " Japan," and do not use it. Ix the United States there are 1,j0." iron works, 882 furnaces, 488 forges, and 225 rolling mills, which produce, annually, about 350,000 tons of iron, the value of which in an ordinary year, ia $50,000,000. Dkath or Mr. ANTHis.--We regret to hear of the death of Mart. Anthis, Sheriff of Knox connty, which occurred on Tuesday, at his residence, after a protracted illness. Vin. Sun. gay " What have the Republicans done ? asks a Doughface exchange, impudently. Well, as far as heard from, the3" have beaten the Democrats terribly, and are in a fair way of beating them entirely. -Chicago Juur. Fine Si-out. -A party of hunters who bad been spending several day3 in river Duscb.ee bottom, met with good success, having killed sixteen turkeys, three deers, and an indefinite quantity of squirrels and smaller game. Vin. Sun. JBf Here is one of the Cleveland Plaindealer's best : What cannon will be discharged when we come to march forth ? Bu-camion, a condemned brass piece, no part of the ordinance of '87. Tun Democratic Jackson Association of Washington having expelled Mr. Wallach, editor of the Star, in its report of the meeting the Star gave it the subjoined heading : " The Dem. Jack. Ass. Bbaxs." The abbreviations, of course, were to save space, but they were expressive. Post of Honor. The post of honor in a procession in which there are carriages, is the right of the back seat in the leading cariage. The fact may be worth remembering, as many fail to recognize the distinguished guest in whose honor a military and civic display ia made. The Bank of Corydon. We understand that James U. Shields, Esq., of New Albany, has rented Mr. B. P. Douglas's brick corner, and intends establishing a bank under the free banking law, at this place, in a short time. It is to be based on a capital of i?50,000, and be called "The Bank of Corydjn.' Corydon Democrat. 8saT" De How s mortality statistics, compiled from the last census, show that the people of the L'uited States arc the healthiest on the Globe. The deaths are 320,000 per year, or one and a half per cent, on the population. Iu England the ratio is uearly two per cent. Virginia aud Nuith Carolina are the healthiest of the States, and have 638 inhabitants over one huudied years. An Epitaph. Mr. Dillon, the historian of Indiana, gives some account of a very Aged Scotchman who died at Jefferson ville. A friend has copied the inscription upon the grace stone : "Erected to the memory of a nativo of Uallaway of Scotland who departed this life the 30th of July, 1822, aed 161 years. Hero tho wicked cease from troub ling. Here the weary are at r.OSt." V .1 Ledger. The certificate of election has been I awarded to Mortou, Democrat, s deli;aie from Nebraska, his apparent majority being fourteen. Therein little doubt that Daily, I Republican, was fairly elected, by over one J hundred majority, and that he will pet the , seat (as he did that he h Ids in the present j Congress) on a contest. Nebraska is liepuh- ! lienn, that-party having an undisputed majority in the Legislature. Cn. f.'.-. Panic Operations. Panic makers are attempting to depreciate prices of property in the District on account of the present political excitement, but their efforts are of no avail. There is more building now than ever before, and the structures are of an improved character. Propertv-holders declare that the election of Lincoln will be followed by an influx of Northern capital ami energy here, which must result iu benefit to nil classes. Wash. Cor. S. Y. Tril.nne. Hint to American Tklrorahh Companies. The Magnetic Telegraph Company of Great Britain are now issuing small adhesive stamps for franking messages throughout their lines in the United Kingdom. The system is precisely similar to the postage stamp system. A message can be written wherever convenient, ami alter affixing the necessary stamp, it can be sent either by post or messenger to the nearest magnetic telegraph statiou, aud thencu forwarded to its destination. There is said to be a liberal discount on these stamps in order to assist in bringing them into general use. The multiplicity of American telegraph companies will interpose a serious obstacle to the imitation of this convenient plan in this country, yet it seems as if a conventional tariff might lie arranged for an etl'ort of the kind. Five Millions and Half in Silver. The Tasmania steamer recently carried from the West India Islands to Southampton $5,002,000 in specie, nnd as nearly the whole of it consisted of silver, being dollars from Mexico, its total weigh! exceeded 156 tons. The treasure was contained in no less than 2,108 packages, and the whole of it was lauded in seven hours. It was then deposited in thirty-six railway wagons, which formed a special train, drawn by two engines. At the London station the treasure was transferred from the railway wagons to thirty-six street wagons nnd vans, which latter, being drawn by upwards of oue hundred horses, reached the li.ink of England about ten a. m., nnd the entire cargo was safely deposited in the vaults of that establishment by 5 p. m. the same day. Cats Fueb from Headache. It is quite wonderful to see a cat jump down betghtf. She never seems to hurt herself, or to feel giddy with the fall J she always falls on her feet, and these are so beautifully pn tided that they seldom or never get broken. I never knew of a cat breaking its leg from an accident, but in oue instance, and that was a French cat, which fell down stairs in the most 6tupid maimer. Why does ni t the cat get a headache after her deep jumps '.' why does she not get concussion of the brain, as a man or a dog would, if he performed a similar acrobatic felt ? If we take down one of our dry cat's heads, oil the keeper's museum wall, and break it up. we shall see that it has a regular partition wall projecting from its sides, a good way inwards, toward the ceuter, so as to prevent the brain from suffering from concussion. This is, indeed, a beautiful OHjIrivance, and shows an admirable internal structure, made in wonderful conformity with external form and nocturnal habits.- Dr. BticMund.
