Letter from Spencer County. Rockport, Oct. '..'9th, 1800. Editors Journal: Last week we had a visit from Dr s. Mullen and Barton, who are perambulating around, advocating the cause of National Democracy. Dr. Mullen entertained us in a speech some two or three hours long. He commenced by hitting right , and left at the Republican party for some fifteen or twenty minutes, and then devoted himself to Douglas and his great principle, with what effect could best be told by the muttered curses of the Douglas men as he proceeded with his argument. It reconciliation had been thought of beforehia arrival, it certainly has not been 3ince. On last Saturday night, the 27 th, Hon. Wm. E. Niblack had a crowded house to hear him give his advice and tell what he saw and did when he was in Congress, or rather Washington. Hisspeech was a milk and water atfair, being an attempt to be on both sides of the house at once. It was good Lord, good Devil all the way through. He said that he was a Breckinridge and Lane man in sentiment, but thought it likely he should vote for Douglas, but had not fully decided what he would do- He said he was not here to try and influence public sentiment, but advised them all to do as they pleased, as from the present condition of affairs, Lincoln whs bound to go in and he thought the only salvation lor the parly was, after the election was over, to throw overboard all the. old party leaders and reorganize under the lead of men who had never been heard of before. If this was not done, and thai im-kly, why the party would be rent into a thousand atoms, and Republicanism i :, ti called it, Aboli tionism) would reign ii inuiphantin the land. He pictured in terrible colors the calamities that would happen to our country if we allowed colored children tho privilege of free srlu .-Is ; grew indignant at the idea that col d men were allowed to vote in some ol i he States; regretted that Martin Van Bnr u and other Democrats upheld and defended stich a policy, and urged the Democracy of Indinna to keep clear of such views; and wound up with a pit belie appeal to the mpn of Speticr to votp for Hreck inridge, Bell, Douglas, or anybody to defeat Abe Lincoln. In the course of bis remarks he got off a glowing eulogy on Joe Lane ; ' thought him the perfection of a gentleman 1 and Democrat ; said he was his first choice I for President and would now rather see him i elevated lo that position thnn any other man ' in the Vnion. As to the effect his speech bad on Deiao- j crats, you can judge what it was 1'roai the j remark ! beard a prominent member of that party make as I was on my way home. The expression osed was, " d n snch a milk and water man. The Republicans are getting ready to give Porter and Dunn a glorious reception next Thursday, and there will, no doubt, be a large crowd here. Arrangements have been matin to hold ' meetings in every township next Saturday ! evening, to get ready to bring out the full vote on election day. We want to give Lincoln several hundred majority here. With a united front to meet we could give some majority, but as itis, it will be counted by the hundreds. Veatch is out now filling appointment ) through the District, and w ill do good service wherever he goes. Already the sound of the Lincoln host is heard, like the rush of many waters, as tbey gather together for the final charge. On, men, on ! The American Eagle is looking down with a kindling eye, and a triumphantly swelling heart, on freedom's mighty host, and, with outstretched wings, impatiently waiting to bear the glad tidings all over the world, that the battle is futighl the victory won. I will endeavor to send you the election returns at the earliest moment possible. Spencku County. An Interesting LtHtr. We print below a very interesting and racy description of the new "Oil Wells " in Pennsylvania It is the best and most read, uble account we have seen : Co,r-ponJeii:e of the BtttOn Fo-I. Tideoct, Pa., October 10, 1800. The name of this place is pror.ouuced by the natives liddeynte, and is famous for its "oil wells.'' As I have just passed through all the "oil region," I will give your readers a sketch of what 1 saw and heard, as tho excitement created by the discovery of '-oil mines' is almost equal lo the California gold fever. I left New York at G p. m., and should have been in Pittsburgh, Pa, the uext dy at 1 r. m but we ran over a cow aboat 20 miles from Pittsburgh, the cars going at the rate of 30 or 40 miles per liom. which threw the baggage and five pnssenger cars down an embankment, neatly 20 feet, head over heels, and caused a complete smash up. The cars w e were In turned over several times, and left the roof with nearly all of us passenger? iu it, emptying its eontents out as you would potatoes from a basket. One car went over the left bank, and be baggage car and other passenger cam, down the right The track was completely destroyed, and car wheels, trucks, 4c, were scattered in every direction. It was an awful scene; people screaming; blood streaming from cuts and wounds but, miraculous as it may seem, out of 300 or 400 passengers, only two or three, and a brakeman, were much injured, and they not per. manemly for life. The Company Bent out a special train from Pittsburgh, with doc-
, tors and a "lawyer," and took the wounded to a hotel, and gave them every .mention and paid all damages mid ex;.eut- . i.lthouh ;is usual, no one was tu bttiiuc. N'-arly all were more or less brtiiael, and it was three or four days before we felt like traveling agniu by railroad. We then took the Ft. Wayne Railroad to "Enon Valley," forty-five miles, and thence by w bat is called a "back," a vehicle iutended to carry sis, but forced to curry nine with only two horses. In this way wo proceeded through Newcastle and Mercer, to i Franklin, at the juuetion of French Creek and the Alleghany Hiver a distance of sixty miles from the railroad over an awful road ; indeed, it was no road at all most ' of the way, an 1 reminded me very much of that one towards " Jordan." In fact, all through this region, the roads are gullied out, or full of rocks and mud holes, and tinI only wonder is horse Hush ami wheels can get over them at all two or three miles an liDur is fast traveling. Franklin is the ' county seal of Venango county, and has population of 1,000 or 1,500 inhabitant?,
froin n'nliii place we went via Oil Creek, to Titusville, and thence to this place, a ditar.ee of forty or fifty miles. This whole region was formerly supported by the lum bar business and a few iron furnaces ; but lumber is getting scarce and charcoal furnaces cannot compete with coal in other sections of the State. The land is poor and rocky, and the crops have failed for two or three years past by frost in Juue or heavy rains in harvest time, and a year ago the inhabitants were in very needy circumstances, and poor as rals. About this time a New Haven Yankee, Col. Drake, came out here, and went to boring for oil on Oil Creek, near Titusville. The people laughed at him and called him crazy, and would not trust him ft dime ; but sure enough, after drilling a hole three or four inches in tliani eter and about 100 feet deep, up came the oil, and he soon pumped twenty or thirty barrels of it up per day . He and his asscciates bad quietly leased and bought all tl e land they deemed desirable in the vtciaitr for a song, ami when the natives saw the oil coming up by the barrel they were dumbfounded ; but a few days only were necessary to set them all crazy, and such a stampede and rnsh as took place through the country for fifty or a hundred miles around, was a caution to "old fogies. " People who could not pay their debts or earn a liviDg, suddenly became millionaires in their own and other people's estimation ; farms which before would not bring $1000 were now held at $1 00,000, or even a million, and everybody went to leasing "oil territory " not start), and boring for oil. At first the landlords only demanded neighlh of the product, but soon as oil was (bund in certain districts adventurers and speculators would rush in and bid one-auar, ter or one-halt',and in rome ca.'es Hve-eiirhtlrs has been premised and a bonus of ! to $.100 for iheright to bore in aa acre or two of territory. An old blacksmith muued F.vans down at Franklin, owned an acre of two of land on which his home was located ; liis well had always been "oily " in nuiomer and spoilt the water when the well wns low. He dug or bored down his well some ! sixty or Seventy feet ar.,1 up came the oil, and be is pumping twenty barrels a day He has beeu offered 50,000 lo $100,000 for his place, or $ 10,000 i SI 2,000 rent per annum, but the old fellow saiu no, he had a lot of boys and girls to help him work it, and if b bad the money somebody would cheat him out ol it or get it away from bias. There has always been oil springs through this region, from which the Indians collected Seneca oil, whi.-h was sold by druggisls soon after the settlement of this country ; and at one spot on Oil Creek a Mr. McL'lintoek has collected thirty or tortv barrels of oil every suiiiruMr when the creek was low. It is not (bund in the coal regions as many Suppose, there being no coal in the vicinity of the Wells or spring, except some veins H few miles below Franklin. A- to its origin Geologists are at fault -there are various theories. Il i", however, generally found near a ripple or rapids on the banks of a river or creek, by boring 100 to 300 feel, although wells have been bored nearly 500 feet within a stone'.- throw of wells pumping oil at a depth ol ion or 200 feet, end Bhonra no signs of oil. 1 am inclined to think it is found in crevices, or upheaving of the earth biased by oleanic action at soma remote period of the world, and that coal is this oil solidified by the action of air or chemical action i oe proof oi mis is that a suOBtance resembling coal in a simplified form is found in this country and in Fngland The Torbay and bog head coals of England are different entirely from anthracite or bituminous cnals, and Courts of law in Fngland, recently, 1 think, decided that the Tor bay was not a coal on scientific evidence. However there is no doubt that oil is to be found, or Petroleum, as it is called, in large i, mint it i cs iu various parts of the DintedStates, iu Cuuada, and in the Eist Indies near Bomahy, where 400,000 hhds. ate obtained annually, it is said. In Canada and Ob io, recently, it has been found in many localities, but the quality is very different from the Pennsylvaniauil which is said to be much the best. The excitement , of course, throiiuh all Western Pennsylvania, is intense, and t should think not lc;-s than 2000 or 25O0 welts are now being hated or are pumping oil, although of Ibe latter the number does not exceed fifty in the whole region of I'cnusylvaniii, and they will not average, probably, over 400 or 500 barrels per day - some Of" them are getting bom 20 to 00 barrels a day and others from I to 10 barrels but no w ell that litis ever struck oil has given out entirely, although many vary according to the manner they are worked ami the interruptions caused by gas, water, far. The Hoover well, two miles below Franklin, I saw and all admit, pumps 60 barrels of pure oil iu 24 hours, and is, I think, the most productive well in the country : nil now netsl 5 to 20 els. per gal., so it is a very valuable milch cow, as 5 per day will pay all the expenses of pumping. Thousands have gone to work and sunk wells who will never find oil, and w ill be ruined if their means are small. A "derrick," consisting of four poles SO feet long, aud framed together like a tower, is first put up, and then a drill of iron IS ol 20 feet long, bung to a limber level ly a rope or wooden rod, which is Worked In two lin n up and down by their feet ol weight, and a third man holds and guides the drill. It takes ti om one mouth lo six months to find oil or discourage the men. depending oil circumstances. Alter i I is found in quantity, a small steam engine i. put up, the hole being first riunned out, and iron or wooden pipes driven down to the solid lock. The whole expense of putting a well in operation is from $1,500 to 92, 500, where oil is found at one or two haodred teet from the surface. New wells are developed every day, but yel nine out of ten must, I think, be disappointed It will never be used as a substitute for sperm or linseed oil, as a lubricator, or lor paint but for illuminating puroees it is splendid after it ta refined, aud much heifer and cheaper than gas - and it is said for ocean steamers it is far better and more economical, when space is considered, than coal for fuel. It is in great demand, ami no danger of pro- J duction ever getting alieaH of consumption . at present prices.
The hotels are crowded, people often sleeping three in a bed, and one hears nothing talked of but " patrolmen," " surface indications," "boring." "territory," ' pumping," &c; landlords, doctors, lawyers, ministers, blacksmiths and almost everybody has nu interest in a well bored or being bored. As to the election, it is entirely forgotten in the eagerness of securing a fortune. A politician drove up to old Father Raymond s Rural House, in Franklin, ( the old mau has two wells pumping fifty barrels daily,) and after getting bis dinner, commenced pumping the old gentleman by asking, " How is politics ?" ' Don t know any gueh well around here,' replied II. "Bill, says the stranger, " what is the prospect lor Douglas or Breckinridge'.'" "Ob," says Boniface, " I don't know ; it all depends on whether there are auy surface indications. M But," continues his guest, " will fusion go down among you oil-diggers 7 .' ' Fusion," exclaims the landlord. " well, 1 don't know; some of those fellows called geologists stys that there must be fusion down below, but my opinion is that the d 1 bap something to no with it dow n there before we get it. ' But, says the politician, 1-are vou not in favor of?iilattei sovereignty in the Territories :' "Ko, 1 will shoot anybody who dares to sijiiat on any of my territory ; and I own four miles on Sandy Creek." " Give me my horse, says the stranger - and vamoosed. Yours, Nassau.
