DunKre Fott-TAiKs TkiLKtfATtT.--The Metropolitan free drinking fountains ot London are effecting much for temperance. An association has been formed,! U-hevr, through the agency of a Mr. Gurnev, lor the erection of these fouatatfas ; and that dUtiuKuisbed nobleman Lord Shaftsbury is now at the head of this, as, indeed, of almost every benevolent effort to benefit the poor. It has often been exceedingly difficult for the poor aud laboring classes to obtain a drink of pure water, aud multitudes have thns been compelled to go to the public bouses and drink ale or beer, when they would not have done so if water could have Lueu obtained. The object of the association is the erection, in suitable public thoroughfares, of neat and artistic fountains-, supplied with pure water. Due hundred have already been erected. Most of them are beautiful as works of art, and many of them hixw Scripture inscriptions, which are read by the million, and which, by God 3 blessing, may be a word in season to some weary souls. The inscriptions are such as the following " Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again, but whosoever drinketh of the
water that I give him shall never thirss. " If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink." " Whoever will, let hiin take of the water of life freely. " These fountains are really a most admirable and benevolent device, and ought to be introduced into all our American cities without delay fitefThe Rockport Democrat complains i that some one circulated secretly a German c ircular on the day previous to the late election, containing some slanderous statements : in regard to David T. Laird's antecedent. The circular alluded to, we are informed, , was merely a translation of articles which i appeared a couple of years since in the Can- j nelton Reporter and Rockport Democrat. ' Whether or not they' were of a slanderous : nature the editors. of those papers of course j know bejt, and it is not for us to contradict i tbeni. Verily, Mr. Laird can cry out from j the depths of his soul, "save me, oh ! save i me from mv friends."
