White, Henderson; Grey Eagle, Louisville. ——— ......The weather yesterday continued cloudy and cool during the day, but at night became clear. The river has fallen about 18 inches; and is steadily declining. PITTSBURG, Oct. 22d.—River 3 feet 11 inches by the pier mark, and falling. Weather mild and cloudy. CINCINNATI, Oct. 22d.—River fallen 18 inches since Saturday. There are now 8 feet 5 inches in the channel. Rained all day yesterday; cloudy and damp all night; now rainy again. Mercury 45°. ......The fleet and elegant steamer Gen'l Anderson is the regular mail and passenger packet for Paducah. She leaves at noon to-day. Capt. Ben. Egan, a prompt and popular clerk, has charge of the office and attends to passengers. ......The Charley Bowen, Capt. B. T. Dexter, is the regular passenger packet for Cairo, leaving at 12 o'clock to-day. Our urbane and affable friend, Mr. W. J. Markell, has charge of the office. Passengers will be taken through in excellent style. ......The Louisville Grey Eagle, Capt. W. H. Daniels, will be in port this evening for all points up the Ohio, as far as Portland wharf. She is the regular mail and passenger packet, and those who patronize her will find her accommodations complete. ......The Gen. White, her machinery having been repaired, has resumed her regular daily trips between this port and Henderson. She affords the most convenient means of communication between Evansville and her sister city over the river. ......The Luc Eaves and D. B. Campbell both took out good trips yesterday. Trade up Green river must be improving. The other regular packets and the outside boats also appeared to be doing a fair business. ......Our good-natured friend, Zack Taylor, of the Minnetonka, has again placed us under obligations for newspaper favors. By the by, Mr. Taylor "stopped off" the 'Tonka yesterday, and has, we believe, accepted a position on the Gen'l Anderson. ......Our rival Cairo packets, the Charley Bowen and Gen'l Anderson, we understand, had quite a light little brush between them yesterday on their way up. They both started out from Smithland at about the same time, and it was "nip and tuck" between them until their arrival here, the Bowen getting in a few minutes ahead. ......We learn that the Illinois Central Railroad Company are about to establish a new line of steamers from Cairo to New Orleans, one of which will leave Cairo every Sunday and Wednesday after the arrival of the packets from Evansville. Capt. Dexter has effected such an arrangement with the Company that these packets will always make close connections with the Charley Bowen, awaiting her arrival when she is detained, so as never to miss. The Bowen will also ticket passengers through from this place to any point on the lower river. This will give her all the advantages of a through boat. ......A number of fine horses, including "Stockbridge Chief,'' "Draco," "Ethan Allen," and others, came up on the Minnetonka yesterday, from Paducah, where they have been exhibited at the Fair. They proceeded up the river on the little Grey Eagle. ......The hull of a to be little coasting freighter came down the river yesterday, in charge of the workmen by whom she is being built and who own her. The hull was built at Grandview, but she is to be finished and receive her machinery here. It is not yet determined in what trade she will ply. ======= BULKHEADS.—The New York Times, commending bulkheads, says: Four solid bulkheads below the main deck, dividing the hull into water-tight compartments, are practical proof against foundering. We never heard of a collision that could have resulted in foundering a boat so constructed. These means would have saved the Lady Elgin—saved three hundred lives—saved crushing a thousand hearts. But it would have been five hundred almighty dollars, and the steamer would not have afforded dinners and berths to quite so many people at the least possible cost. ———<>——— WISCONSIN RAILROADS.—The railways of Wiscousin are now fully employed and will presently begin to give traffic returns with plump round figures, as compared with the attenuated sums of last year. In 1859 Wisconsin suffercd severely from the crop failure; wheat was not much more than onehalf or two-thirds an average crop, and corn was almost an entire failure, to say nothing of the great injury to other crops. This year the wheat crop is unexampled, the yield ranging as high as from 30 to 35 bushels, and in some instances 40 bushels to the acre while the quantity [sic] is at the same time superior. Corn, too, is abundant, and everything cultivated by the farmer has thriven to maturity and abundance in about the same ratio, as last year the same products wilted and decayed under frost and blight.—Western Railroad Gazette>. ———<>——— LIFE-PRESERVING trunks have been invented. A raft got up by lashing them together is said to be capable of riding out almost any storm.
