ithout doubt. Greeley, Weed, Brvant

Webb all the Republican editors and all the Republican speakers of that State, seem not to entertain a doubt of success against he fusion. Senator Soward, who understands his State a3 thoroughly as any other man, talks confidently of 50,000 and 00,000 as the Republican majority. He left home for two or three weeks last month to travel through the West ; this he certainly would not have done bad he entertained a shadow of doubt of New York being safe for the Republican party. But in that State the most strenuous 'exertions are being made to throw ilie vote of the State against the Republican candidates. The process of fusing all the opponents of the Republican party (except the Gerrit Smith Abolitionists, and we are not sure but they form part of the hashed dih set before the anti-Republicans of New York) has been laboriously going on for several weeks, and at last the Jonn of a coalition is eutored into.

We are too attentive in our active and busy pursuits for fame and wealth we are to little attentive to the keeping of a " sound mind in a sound body-."' Wre sacrifice the one thing in the hope of raising the other. I will state, so far as regards myself, that for nearly forty years (and I believe I have labor,) I have made it a rule to work from one to three hours each day in the garden, and thus, though ray star has long culminated, and I am goiug down the western slope of life with increasing impetus, I find myself in a good state of health, and I attribute it to the fact that I have exercised my arms

The Henderson Reporter (Breckin

The crowd at tbe Stale Fair w3 so

great that a railroad train constantly running and innumerable omnibusses and other vehicles, could not carry it to and from the grounds fast enough. A street railroad is now talked of for next year. The distil nee of the grounds from Indianapolis a couple of miles from the centre is now severely felt, as was foretold ; but we suppose the spaciousness and beauty of the grounds make up for this inconvenience.

A Shrewd Bet on Elections. Tba Springfield Republican reports a bet which we think is as well worth recording as any other of these " signs of the times." " Look here," said a Republican to a uoisy Bell man. ' I will bet you a hundred

1 dollars that I can name fifteen States that Lincoln will get ; and then I will bet you ; five hundred dollars more that I can name five I additional States that will go for Lincoln."

I The money was put up. The Republican ! then named the fifteen Slave States aa those i f upon which he proposed to risk tho hun- I j dred dollars, and M-jine, Massachusetts, New i Hampshire, Vermont and Wisconsin, as the j five additional States upon which he prvipos- j ed to risk the five h'indred. The Bell man rubbed his eyes, and since j tbe Pennsylvia election, if not before, looks I for a net I033 of tour hundred dollars as the I cost of this lesson in political betting. It j may safely be said that there is now one j convert to the folly of this form af political ; trAwtblino.

ltallro&U meeting. New Vork, Oct. 20. The City of Manchester arrived. Advices anticipated. The Representatives of the Great Atlan-

; tic and Western lines of Rail Road have beeu in session at the St. Nicholas Hotel j during the past few days. The meeting yesterday, adopted a uniform tariff of

freights for the Western Roads, which it is believed will prevent competition in business between the various lines.

Political. Philadelphia, Oct. 10. The Douglas State Central Committee last evening withdrew the straight Electoral ticket, and pledged themselves to support the Reading Electoral ticket, but indorsed Dongias and Johnson as the nominees of the party. An attempt to erase tbe Hreckinridge men from the ticket was unsuccessful. New York, Oct. 1;. The Americans in the Second Congressional (Brooklyn) District have indorsed the Breckinridge nominee, Moses O. Dell.

On Dir. We heard yesterday from good authority that Ex-Governor Paris C. Dunning, one of tbe ablest nnd firmest of the friends of Mr. Douglas in this State, has avowed his intention to support Mr. Lincoln

now that he sees his own preference can not be realized. We are also informed that Mr. Bryant, the present State Librarian, has expressed a similar determination. We do not vouch for the truth of these reports, but we learn them from reliable sources. There is no doubt that very many sincere Douglas men, who adhered to him because they believed his policy would operate a3 effectively against the extension of slavery as any other, withont needless irritation of the slave States, and who desired honestly to

give free labor the ascendancy it deserves in the Territories, see now that his chance is hopeless, and the only man through whom their views can possibly be realized is Abraham Lincoln, an honest and conservative man they all know, and the last man on earth to tolerate any aggression, or improji er irritation of one section by another. election .News. Richmond, Va., Oct, 20. Nelson, the Breckinridge candidate has been elected to the House from the Panhandle by sixty-four majority.

The Washington Star says Repub

licanism is getting amazingly popular in that city since tho prospects of Lincoln's election have brightened, aud accessions to tbe Republican ranks are overwhelming. It is quite amusing to hear the ejaculations of surprise as different parties meet at the Republican Club Room as, "Who the d 1 would have thought of seeing yot here .'" " Hello I I thought I saw you behind that Bell at Rockvilie ?"

" When did you leave the Breckinridge j crowd ?" " I thought you was lor Doug- 1

las ?" " Thunder ! yon a Republican ? Times have changed since you was iu tbe mob that was going to tear down the Era office " and so on.

Indignant.--The Sullivan Democrat, an , influential Douglas paper, indignantly scorn8 the idea of any fusion with the Breckinridge ; men, or ' Bright mulattoes," as it calls them The Democrat "lets off' as follows: "They are thus convicted of being the cause of our defeat they openly glory in it, , and exult at tbe success of Lane. They are now ready to fuse, as they say, to defeat Lincoln, and ask us to come in ; aud probably, Democrats many be found who will . listen favorably to their infamous proposals. For one, and we know wespeak the sentiments of nine-tenths of the true Demoj cracyofSul- livan co.mty we say, Xever ! Xo union with men who have thus betray, 1 ed us."

Douglas I., Missouri. j Jkpf bsso Cm , Oct. 20. Jndge Doug- . las's trip from St. Louis to Jefferson City was a continued ovation. He was bailed j with shouts of welcome all along the road, . and the eager multitudes assembled at the principal station - would not let him pass by without speaking. He is now addressing 1 an immense crowd in front of the capital. ; Creat enthusiasm prevails.

The Latbst Schbmh. The last desperate resort of the Anti-Republican factions, it is understood, will be to attempt to throw every Southern electoral vote (10) for Breckinridge and Lane, and to add tbe thirty-five votes of New York to the same column by aid of the Bell-Douglas party of that State. This affords " infinite fUasur, '' to James Buchanan. The former part ot the arrangment may suoeeed, but New York is sure for Lincoln, in any event. T li. Eipretx.

Alwats Room tjff Stairs. A young man who was thinking of studying law, said to Daniel Webster : " Mr. Webster, I understand the profession of law is quite full, and that there are more lawyers than are needed. Do you think there is any chance for me ?" " There is always room up stairs," was the reply, and as true as it was ingenious. Only a few persons reach tbe high places, and these are always in good demand. " There is room up stairs."
