Minnetonka, Cairo; Gen. White, Henderson. ——— ......The weather continues clear and cool. The River yesterday was still swelling quite fast. It had risen within the proceding 24 hours nearly one foot. LOUISVILLE, Oct. 18, P. M.—River falling; 5 feet 9 inches in the canal. Weather clear. Mercury 50°. ......The Minnetonka is the regular mail and passenger packet for Cairo and intermediate points. She is a first rate boat of her class, is in charge of careful and obliging officers, and carries freight and passengers safely. She leaves at 12 o'clock to day. ......The Gen. Anderson goes to Cairo at 12 o'clock to-morrow, and wants a full load of New Orleans and Memphis freight. She will be in port early to receive it. ......The famous steamer Charley Bowen will be in port this evening to receive freight for Cairo and all points on the lower rivers. She leaves at noon to-morrow.— We learn from a private dispatch that her last trip of freight is all gone from Cairo, having been reshipped immediately. We are not informed upon what boat. ......The Evansville and Henderson packet Gen. White had the misfortune to break a shaft when coming up on Wednesday night, and is obliged to lay up a short time in order to have it replaced. ......The Maid of the Mist, which has been out of the water at the Bodiam mines, undergoing repairs, got afloat again yesterday, and came up to the city wharf last night, with a tow of coal. ......We are under obligations to Mr. Zach. Taylor, of the Minntonka [sic], for newspaper favors. The Minnetonka was so much delayed, by fogs &c, on her last trip that she has been obliged to lay over and lose one trip in order to get back on her running time. She is in port for Cairo this morning on her regular time. ......The steamer Arago, lately sunk and raised again, has come off the ways at Carondelet in excellent order. She is said now to be a better boat than when new. ......The City of Louisiana has been given up to her owners by the Memphis Packet Company, and will hereafter ply between Cairo and New Orleans in connection with the Illinois Central Railroad. A correspondent at Indianapolis sends us a letter dated the ICth, from which we copy the fo'.lowintr Interesting passages: "The Breckinridge electors, or a number of them, are here consulting over the proposed fusion. I hare talked with Judge Eckles and Dr. Sherrod. They both say there is no possible chance for a fusion. Kckles says there is but one word in the English language which expresses his feelings, and that word is 'tour.' Ho says it is against hU principles to ever compromise, anoTthat he must either whip or be whipped; and that the seared Oougltisites will find the Breckinridge party in a 'more than ever unhealthy condition.' I heard him remark on the street this morning that he wished Douglas could be got back to Indi ana to speak, for there seems to be a deathlv political miasma emanating from his person and consequently matters would soon come to an end so far as the Douglas party is concerned. " Sherrod says the Douglas leaders will nearly all be for Liucoln before the election. Paris C. Dunning is already out straight out and openly for Old Abe so says Dr. Sherrod. ' None of these things were said in private, but on the street nnd at the hotel dining table. They seem to me to show how the thing will turn out." Mn. Dcns:no was here a couple of months ago, it will be recollected, and made a speech in the Upper Market House, where he used the expression that he would rather vote ten thousand times for Lincoln than once for Breckinridge ami Lane on their present platform. 'ur readers will also recollect that we surmised at the time that Mr. Dunning would come out for Lincoln before the camoaign was over. We only ;
judged from the above expression. If he really has joined our party, we congratulate him on his lucky escape from the sinking Douglas ship. We predict that other leading men will leave Douglasism and join the Republican party within the next two weeks. Ef-kkcts of thb Lath Frosts upon Tobacco. From all accounts the effects of the fro3ts of the latter part of last week upon the tobacco crop have heen most disastrous, involving the loss, perhaps, of about oneeighth of the crop in the tobacco growing region of the south'-rn portion of the State. Here is what John W. Forney, of the Philadelphia Press, ha3 to say about those ill-assorted matche s, political coalitions. The returns of yesterday's election indicate the election of Col. Andrew Gregg Curtin, as Governor of Pennsylvania, by an unprr.-edented majority. Mr. Foster"s silence has assisted him, it would seem, with no section of the Democratic party. The vote has been unusually large, and the defeat singularly significant. The returns speak in bolder and stronger Saxon than we can write. There can now happily be no more balking of the great question involved in the Presidential straggle. The reasons in favor of a combination against Abraham Lincoln, however they may have operated prior to the election decided yesterday, and however they may operate in advance of that which is to be decided on the first Tuesday of Sorember coming, cunutt be effective when men eome to choose between candidates, each of whom represent a principle, antagonistic to the other. Now we take it there can be no more union between Breckinridge and Douglas than between two naturally repulsive forces. Each represents a distinctive plat form. No advocate of Mr. Douglas believes, orjaffects to believe, in the doctrine upon which Major Breckinridge stands, and no advocate of Major Breckinridge believes, or affects to believe, in the doctrine upon which Mr. Douglas stands. The Southern friends of Breckinridge, more frank than the most of the friends of Douglas, declare as a general thing, that under no circumstances will they ever accept cither the candidate, or the creed upon which the regular Democracy stand. In the language of Senator Benjamin, of Louisiana, in his last great speech, they would not accept victory it their platform was to be construed in one way in the North and another in the South. They believe that the institution of slavery is carried by the Constitution of the Foiled States into the Territories of the Union, and that it must be protected there against the popular will; and rather than yield this principle, or submit to the election of a Northern niau to the Presidency of the United States, like Abraham Lincoln, the most of them would be willing to justify a preparation for secession from the Union. They have made the issue. Standing upon this idea, they have so conealidated the Southern people around their candidate, Mr. Breckinridge, that we shall not lie surprised, since Colonel Curtln's election, to see a very large majority of the Southern people decide in favor of that candidate. They are sensible of this great advantage; and while in the Southern States they reject with disdain all coalitions with Mr. Bell, whom they regard as a traitor to Southern institutions, and trample upon Mr. Douglas as an enemy equally hostile to them with Mr. Seward himself, they are, with condescending sagacity, particularly willing to unito the friendsof Bell and Donglas in the free State; to carry electors against Lincoln, because they know that in such a combination they will be able to gain something, which will be added to the con trolling aggregate of their triumphant electoral vote in the South. EVERY FUSION IN THE FRRK STATES, THEREFORE, IS INTENDED TO PROMOTE THE ELECTION OF JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE TO THE PRESIDENCY of THE UNITED STATES. The friends of Mr. Douglas, rather than see themselves usefl as instruments in favor ot extreme Southern Disuniouism, will now leave the responsibility of tbe coming result to ihose v!i-. while protesting that the election of Abraham Lincoln must lead to the dissolution of the Union, stubbornly refuse to sustain arid Support the only candidate before the American people who could have prevented the election of .Mr. Lincoln.
