The New-Yorkers haver been holding their State Fair at Klmira, and getting Mr. Quincy to deliver an address to them. Mr. Quincy said many excellent things, of which the following is a specimen : He thought we might derive an instructive lesson from a comparison of Euglish farming with our own. In England an account is kept with every field. There is in this country a want of economy in securing and usiug products ; for a close economy in the expenditure of money is not inconsistent with a lavish extravagance in the use of those things on the farm which are worth money. The orator earnestly inculcated thorough cultivation of our soils. It was " hard doctrine " for the Anglo-Saxon farmer, that maxim of the Romans : "Admire large farms, but cultivate small ones;" for be would be constantly coveting some Cuba or Mexico on the other aide ol his neighbor's fence, and longing to extend the area of freedom. There is too much land in our country, and Mr. Q. draws encouragement from the hope that far beyond the Mississippi is a barren plain which will ultimately confine our farmers to the land which they already possess. Mr. Q. laid it down as a maxim that the agriculturist who takes more from his land than he returns to it, increases his income by diminishing his capital. The crop must be replaced by its equivalent. In England the leases uniformly contain a stipulation quiring the tenant to manure after e crop. Nor was Mr. O,. in favor of fetched and dearbonght fertilisers. revery farHe gently satirized our phosphates, and superphosphates, ourcatbouates, and bicarbonetes, blood, bone and wool manure, Peruvian uano and concentrated potash, all claimed 1 be so potent in their effects that a man m"lt almost carry enough to fertilize a farm in his pocket snurf box.
