Editor Journal : It has bet a some time since I attempted to jot down a few items to seud you not that the political world has grown esjtn and peaceful, for as the ides of October and November draw near, the fight waxeth hotter and hotter. Especially is this the case between our rival candidates for tte Legislature. Laird having been unsuccessful so often, he knows that if beaten again he is about " gone up the spout." Although the position of Legislator, which he aspires to, is not very lucrative, nor will it cause him to be burdened with excessive honors, still, as it is a stepping-stone to further promotion, and as defeat is a deathblow to his future prospects, he is straining every nerve, and you may rest assured will leave no stone unturned to be the lucky man. Another thing to aid him is the bitter animosity of hU Lbinocratic friends against Veatch bitter because he is the recognized leader and champion of the Republican party in these parts. They fear him for his ability and hate him for his death-dealing blows to Democracy, aud they hhveaworn in their wrath he shall bedefeated. To do this they are ready to swap off votes on the other County candidates, especially where the Democrats have two men out for the same office, and they think - tbore ii not much chance anyhow. I believe they had rather lose the whole of their County ticket and have Veatch defeated, than gain it and see him elected. But (he Republicans are wide awake, and as their favorite has thus been singled out as the man to be put down, they will see to it that he loses nothing by his devotion to the cause of free labor and free homo?. The Graudview Neus is doing good work in the cause, and has already got a very respectable subscription list. The Democracy are considerably down in the mouth about the news from Maine, and re preparing themselves for worse at least the more sensible portion of them. The Republicans were never more confident, and are in the best of spirits. The prospect grows brighter and brighter. Succeed we mnst; succeed we will. Spencer County. ggThe Gavitt Democracy, through their organ, are beginning to warn their party against fraudulent votes on the part of the Opposition. That is the way they always talk when contemplating the most shameful election frauds themselves. They know they are beaten in this County unless they resort to such means, and we have good reason to X-noic that they expect to carry the County by " importing," "double voting' and all such fraudulent means. They can't do it by fair means. Therefore they cry " stop thief to divert attention from themselves. We earnestly warn the Opposition to le on the alert in every township of the County, and also in every other county of the District, parti' ularly along the River. - Death Sentence. At Terie Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Judge Claypool overruled the motion for a new trial in the case of the Slate vs. Lewis Bradford, aud scutenced the prisoner to be hanged on the 1th of January, 18G1. Bradford s counsel has filed a bill of exceptions for the purpose of carrying the case to the Supreme Court. The prisoner murdered a man east of Tt rre Haute a couple of months ago. tUF At a late speech by Hon. Charles R. Train, at Tewksbuiy, Mass., the speaker said : " We have in the Republican platform all that was good in the old Whig and Democratic Platforms." Well said : aud we will further :sny that amongst its members are the boiler portions I those parties.
From the ' 'in. iVies Current, - pt 'Jt'Jh, IM.O. Uiiliies mid Klnmii tul Suniiunry ut' the I'a.i Vok a The Money market gradually bce.ime easier during the week, owing to a marked increase in the supply of currency, and at the close all the good business paper offered was taken by the regular banking houses at 10al:2 pr. ct. The collections with mer
chants are good, so that the currency which went into the interior to purchase wheat is being returned in thi3 way quite rapidly. the market for hastern and Southern time bills has not undergone any important change during the week ; the offerings have beon limited, and the range 8 to 10 per cent. Sight exchange on the hastern cities has not changed essentially during the week; the demand has been moderate to good at the rates last quoted. More demand for New Orleans, owing to the fact that sight exchange on New York ha3 declined in that market to prem. We quote: Buying. Selling. .... prem prem. ...'ifj:iO prem prem. ....a prem fsVi preui. New fork SiJi t . HuestOU Philadelphia Baltimore New Orleans , American Cold.... ...5(;0 preui prem A ilis oar i rein yu prem. The buying rate for Missouri, Wisconsin and Illinois currency remains at i dis, but Exchange having advanced to 1 prem. in Chicago, yesterday, renders this an inside quotation. The Flour market has been quite dull the greater portion of the week, though holders, having faith in better prices, did not make any concessions, so that the current orders had to be filled at pretty lull juices, and $4 'JO to 5 10 has been the whole range for superfine during the week. The stock is accumulating, and must continue to do so until prices go np again in New York, or decline here so as to admit of a margin for shipment. As it is now, we are too high to admit of shipment cither to that market or Liverpool. Wheat is held firmly, and the millers were paying SI 08(1 10 tor prime red and 1 121 15 for prime white at the close, but there was very little doing for export, and we may say there is a large quantity now in store here, held by speculators. The news from Europe has produced general disappointment, because it was supposed the crops in England, at least, were about ruined. The iiuantitv of Hour and grain going to the seaboard over the lakes is unusually large. At Buffalo last Friday, the receipts of flour and wheat were equal to 8C3,2J; bushels. This is certainly enormous for one day, and then if to this were added the receipts at Oswego, there is no doubt that the total would reach a million aud a quarter bushels, in the 24 houis. Corn has come in quite sparingly, and has ruled firm, all the week, at 50c per bushel in the ear. Rye advanced to 08(i) T0c, and has been in good demand. The demand for Barley continues active, and 05c('r,Sl were paid for some 4000 bushels prime to choice fall, during the week. Wre understand that seveial of our maltsters have sent agents to the North Cleveland and Buffalo to buy. Whisky declined to 18c Wednesday, and remained steady all the week at this rate, though the receipts have been unusually large. Cheese advanced to OJc for W. R., owing to a good demand. Butter has not changed, but the supply of prime is light and the market firm at 14(5;l0c, whilst the low grades are dull at 9il. Beef cattle declined 25c percental during the week, with a supply in excess of the demand at $5 50SG gross on the spot, and about 4,000 head sold during the week. For future delivery they have been (lull all the week, and at the close it was difficult to find buyers at $0 50 for November, and there were not many disposed to operate at $6 25 for all December. There a.e not many offering, however, still the offerings exceed the demand. The light demand lor provisions, and general dullness of the market, is no doubt exerting an unfavorable influence upon the prospective market for hogs. The market lor all articles in the provision line has been dull during the week, and prices of mess pork and bacon lower, and the demand at the dei line quite limited. The best brands mess pork aie offered at ?lti 50, und baron at 9IlJr, but the demand is quite limited. It is supposed, and upon, M-emingiy, good ground., Ih.it there will soon ai ise a good demand from New Oilcan:', as it is believed the supply in that market, now, will nqt be sufficient to meet tin? demand until the new product comes into market. Nothing transpired in bulk meats, except some sales of new for December, at Oj(i..Se for shoulders and sides. The stock of Lard is about exhausted, except keg. Some small lots of brl. and tierce sold during the week at 1 2j Lie, and 400 keg in. 12"c. iS lies of new for the la3t part of November could be made at loe, but there is not much disposition to sell tor either months. Coal oil has advauced to 75fa80c, with an active demand. Linseed oil is selling at 5057c, aud lard oil at 93(:,95c, for No. 1. In the grocery market there was an active bnsiness done duiing the week, at very full pricerJ. The exports were: of sugar 797 fiftds; of co I fee, 2, S3 7 bags; and of molasses, 1,004 brls; to these may be added one third lor the city and suburban consumption, and it will show a very large consumptive deuiaud. The stock of all articles is light ; indeed, of coffee and sugar, there is, properly speaking, no stock. fife" Judge? Win. Johnston, of Cincinnati (an old Whig who has cmliniced t ho cause of Lincoln), in n speech which he delivered at Madison V tile, near Cincinnati, on the 22d, said that " it was desirable above all tilings to make a man President of the United States who is not shingled all over wilh the mortgages of politicians."
