I A Fine Slant . At the pjre-' --H533 demonstration in 6t. Jf"" " fiPubln ago, there were 3.8' " -lS a few weeki The Democrat J torches in procession. At bair 5S levee past eight, the scene along the t" ..o anybody who stood upon an eleva.a position where the whole length of it I could be seen, was grauJ, and the eti'ect on the steamboatmen must have told trernen- , dousiy. Here ware torches in a double row extending from Poplar street fax beyond j Carr street, and in many places quadrupled j by the counter marching. Marshals and i aids riding up and down giving orders to i the officers of the clubs ; a dozen bands of j music mingling as many patriotic airs ; a thousand voices cheering almost constantly, and the measured tramp of nearly six thousand persons marking time to the music. It j was a grand sigut, and enough to make the j soul of a National Democrat groan with pain. The long line of torches seemed endi less, and from a position nearly central, say at-the foot of Chestnut street, the lights rei ceded gradually in the distance, each way. j j with excelled effect. j There are many thousand citizens not bej longing to the ranks of the procession, who i saw this, and acknowledged that it outdid 1 anything ever before attempted in the way j of a political demonstration. Many of the I steamboats were crowded with visitors, as

from the upper deck3 a fine view was had from almost aoy point.

Talk with a Southerner. Bayard Taylor writes to the New York Tribune :

itOR COMMON PLEAS JUDGE, District composed of Vanderburgh, fcfc, Potey and Gibson Counties, IN PITCHER,

tOR JOINT REPRESENTATIVE tneral Assembly, for the Counties f Posey and Vanderburgh, R. HLGO, of Posey county. Position State Ticket.

FOR GOVERNOR, IT S. LANE, of Montgomery. OR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, VER P. MORTON, of Wayne-. FOR SECRETARY OF STATE, AM A. PEELLE, of Randolph. FOR TREASURER OF STATE, ,'HAN S. HARVEY, of Clarke. FOR AUDITOR OF STATE, '.BERT LANGE, of Vigo. ,FOtt ATTORNEY GENERAL, v $9 O. JONES, of Vanderburgh. VrEPORTER OF SUPREME COURT, IJ1IN HARRISON, of Marion. 1 CLERK OF SUPREME COUKT, i PAUL JONES, of Lagrangp. IfXTESDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION, iS J. FLETCHER, of Putnam.

At White River Junction, where we were obliged to wait two hours for the train from Boston to Montreal, I fell in with an intel- j ligent Southern gentleman, whose statemeets with regard to the gradual deteriorMM of the soil under slave labor (of which, nevertheless, be was an advocate !) went even beyond Helper's abhorred statistics. '

He candidly admitted that Slavery can only exist as a profitable institution through con

tinual expansion ; when the soil of one State is exhausted, it must move to a new j one. " But how long can this process be carried on ?" I asked : " After a century or two, when there is no more new soil left, what then ?'' He shrugged his should- i ers : " That at least, does not concern us." j I think no intelligent Southerner can fail to take the same view of the final effect of , Slave Labor. But, considered from their , own stand-point, what a suggestion does it ' present ! Slavery has no future ! Through j its own operation it destroys itself, by rciak- . inn itself unprofitable, and the question which must come at last: " What is to be ' done with it? " is carelessly passed on to ,

succeeding generations.

Additional Hirer Mews. A letter to the Cincinnati Gazette, says : The bell boat is still at work upon the Choctau-, getting out her freight. The bow of the Choctaw was raised three feet on Sunday, but the heavy pressure of water araidship somewhat twisted the boat, and she was again let down. When our informant left they were making canvas bu'kheads around the boat to prevent the water from breaking over it, and when that is done they will put their pumps atnidship, and endeavor to give her another lift. The impressiou seems now to be that she caunot be raised. The following items are frocj the Cincinnati Gazette of yesterday : The new steamer T. J. Pattin, built at Wheeling, arrived here yesterday and will take the place of the Courier in the Wheeling trade during low water. Capt. Porter has sold the Hastings to Robt. Robinson and others for 58,300, ouehalf cash. She will be commanded by Capt. Robinson, formerly clerk of the J. W. Hailman. Capt. Poe was offered $12,000 yesterday, for the steamer Neptune, by parties for the Memphis trade. Steam was raised for the first time, yesterday, ou the new steamer A. II. Ruihven, to try her machinery. The Good and the Bad. The following true and pleasant passage occurs in one of Frederika Bremer's books : There is much goodness in the world, although at a superficial glance one is disposed to doubt it. What is bad is noised abroad is echoed back from side to side, and newspapers and social circles find much to say about it while what is good goes, at best, like sunshine, quietly through the world.

The story is told of one clerk at Washintou who, on being urged to subscribe for the Breckinridge fund, and mindful of the President'3 Pittsburgh letter, posted off to see his Excellency as to the propriety of making subscriptions. Mr. Bucnauan stated that at the time of writing the letter he hoped to crush out the practice but it was in vain. He saw no objections at this time to small subscriptions. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.

The Presidency in Congress. The New York Journal of Commerce argues, with plausibility, that if the Presidential election goes into the House, (which is all the BellDouglas conspirators can possibly accomplish,) Mr. Lincoln will be elected, by the addition of Oregon and Illinois (the latter through the vote of Mr. Morris to the fifteen States already having Republican majorities in that body. Should this fail, no choice can be effected in the House, and the Senate will elect Lane to the Vice-Presidency, should he be one of the eligible candidates. If not, instead of electing Everett or Hamlin, the Senate (in which the Breckinridge men have a decided majority) will let the election go by default. Breckinridge, who is a member elect of the next Senate, can then be chosen President of that body, pro tempore, and will thu3 bUWMJe the acting President. The programme is a plain one, and the result easily foreseen.

FtUkKIGN Makkj.is. The latest advices from England, which are up to the 17th inst., as telegraphed from Quebec, are unfavorable, regarding the growing crops thorc and leave hardly any doubt that they will be short. Indeed, the weather ami crop matters had assumed such a serious aspect, that the money market was being seriously affected. The Loudon Tunes says, that disappointment in the expectations of a charge in the weather, and threatened political contingencies, have lead to a further decline in English funds. American securities show great firmness, owing to the anticipation of an active business in breadstuffs. Covto;i was higher, under the advices from this country. rmvns stove h.i s tjikbj tub ML first premiums at every Fair where It has been exhibited. At the South-Western Indiana I District Fair, held here October. 1869, there were but two premi mus offered for cooking stoves one for I the best wiod covking stove, and one for the best coal I cooking stove. The Economist took tbe F IRST PREMIUM FOR THE BEST . OOKINO STOVE ! FOR WOOD. Roelker, Kinsman ic Co took the first I premium for their cookiug stove for coal. No other ' premiums were offered. The large silver mdal was I awarded to the Economist at the New York State Fair; and tbe first premium at tbe United States I Fair held at Chlcagu, and twelve othur State and County Fairs iu I -' j In no branch of mechauical ait bae there I been a more apparent advance than in' trie manufacture of stoves. It is but a few years since j the very name was a novelty, representing a huge, shapeless structure, almost as devoid ot ; use as ornament, These have gradually given place i to patterns of grace aud utility ; until the varietif s i our markets now present have almost exhausted j the vocabulary of names; and the different phases the metal is made to 'assume, would astonish old Vulcan himself. Instyle and finish, tjie improvei merit has been real, leaving nothing to Do desired on that point, but the severe competition in price, to which they have been subjected, has deprived ' them of many of the more substantial qualities) ; desirable. This seems more especially to have been i the case in reference to cook stoves aa article ot ' domestic economy that has more to do with scolding wives aud crotcbe.y servants than most people lniI aglne. The public have long sought au improvei meut in this article, and we believe are ready to pay any reasonable price for a cooking stove, if it only poeeeeeeH the inertf of size, weight, convenience, i durability, economy, and perfection of manufacture. These qualities seem to be possessed most fully la I the Econ .mist anew stove, perfected end brought i out the past season, hy Messrs. Treadwnll, I'orry ! A Norton, of Albany. We heard so much of this i stove, and it looked so much like a-tove intended ' for use, that we concluded to try them, and the ' result of the experiment convinces us that the' ; proprietors, in their determination to make the bent ' store in the world, have succeeded. We regard the i Economist as possessing all the merits above enu- '. merated as the great stove of the day far in eilvance of anything ever attempted iu the line of : stoves, perfect iu all it3 appointments, and true to its name in durability and the use of fuel. Among ; the many conveniences attarhed to tt, may be menI tioued a largo oven, with hooks arranged, for emv pending meats while roasting. A copper water tank, holding from 12 to 26 gallons warming closet, broiling hearth, dr., Ac. ' The broiling hearth is one of the most noticeable feata'ree Of this remarkable stove. There never ban Isssn, to clot knowledge, any broiliug.axture that was reallr satisfactory in ita eperatioii. Tit., proprietors of tlu, stove have been conducting a series of experiments upon broiling, eliciting some valuable facts, and rsBolting in the invention of a gridiron adapted to this stove, which has Ween secured hy letters patent, and is one of the most admirable things of the kind we ever saw broiliug without smoke, aud keeping tbe coals iu a constant glow. W'eare aiways glad to do justice to mechanical improvements, aud cs pecially such as contribute so largely to the general good, as the one above mentioned.
