Charley Bowen, Cairo: Grey Eagle, sr., Lou.: Gen. White, Henderson. ——— ......The <River> is receding again at Pittsburgh. Our dispatches report 6 feet 6 inches by the pier mark at noon yesterday. The recent rise was from the Monongahela. At Cincinnati it had risen 10 inches within the preceding 24 hours. There were then 10 feet in the channel. At Louisville it is rising rapidly with 4 feet in the Canal. At this point it is also rising pretty fast.— Weather clear and warm, with considerable wind. ......The "big" <Grey Eagle> is the regular mail and passenger packet for Louisville at 6 o'clock this evening. ......The accident to her machinery, by which the <Charley Bowen> has been detained here, has been fully repaired, and she leaves for Cairo at 12 o'clock to-day in perfectly good order. She receipts for freights through to all points on the Mississippi. We understand from Capt. Dexter that he has contracted with Messrs. Kratz & Heilman, of the City Foundery [sic], for an entire new set of boilers and chimneys for the Bowen; the boilers, three in number, to be manufactured from the best No. 1 Tennessee iron, fully 1/4 inch thick, and furnished with two flues each. The work is to be done and ready to set up within three weeks. The <Bowen> will continue to run regularly until the expiration of that time, and Capt. Decter has made arrangements for chartering a boat to take her place during the time occupied in putting in her new boilers, which will be about one week. ......A Cairo correspondent says: The boilers and engines of the <Martha Putnam>, which burned and sunk at our wharf during the "freeze up" of last winter, have been got out by Messrs. Baird and Stewart, and are to be sold. They are in good condition, not being much damaged. The <T. C. Twitchell> is not yet off the ways at Mound City. ......Capt. Tobin's new boat will be launched from the ship-yard of the Messrs. Howard, at Louisville, this afternoon. ......The wreck of the steamer <Kate Sarchet>, as she now lies sunk in the Wabash river, will be sold at this place by order of the underwriters on Tuesday next. For particulars see advertisement. ......The Memphis papers of Sunday say: The <Hillman> narrowly escaped burning up yesterday. Fire was by some means communicated from the doctor boiler, and when discovered the flames were making considerable progress between the boiler deck and hurricane roof. The flames were speedily extinguished. ......The <Clara Poe> on her way from Cincinnati to St. Louis broke a shaft when near Mt. Vernon. Upon reaching Cairo she rigged it up temporarily and pursued her journey. ......A heavy storm is reported at Hickman on Sunday night, by which the <Fair Play>, bound down, was badly injured, one of herwheels being completely broken up, and she lost several horses overboard. The <Cambridge>, from Vicksburg for St. Louis, was blown ashore, but not injured. She arrited at Cairo, on Tuesday, taking in tow the loaded barge of the <Clara Poe> for St. Louis. ......The steamer <Wisconsin> was lately sunk near Dubuque. The <Wisconsin> was on old boat and not worth much. ......The steamer <Ben. Campbell> was recently burned to the water's edge in the upper Mississippi near Buffalo where she had been for some months laid up. She was insured in the Quaker City office, E. Fay, agent; for $3,500 on the boat, and $500 on the cabin furniture. The <Ben. Campbell> was built near Pittsburg in 1852, under the superintendence of Capt. Lodwick, for the Minnesota Packet Company. BOATMEN'S CONVENTION.— At a meeting of captains and owners of steamboats, plying in the Ohio river and tributaries, held at Louisville on Tuesday, Capt. B. J. Ctafrey was called to the chair, and C. T. Reeder appoint ed Secretary. Ten steamers were represented, all of whom joined the Louisville Union Benevolent Association. A committee of six was appointed for the purpose of establishing rates of freight from Louisville to Tennessee river, Cumberland river, Cairo, Memphis, and St. Louis. The meeting adjourned to meet again on Monday morning next, at the Inspectors' office, at the general meeting of the Association, called for that day.
