Each day's observation convinces us that he sole object of the Douglas leaders in nnning their " forlorn hope " candidate, 3 to secure the local offices. This is all the ibject they can have in view. Here iu Iniana, where Douglas was supposed to be opular, and Breckinridge " nowhere," the artizans of the former have been the most ctive. Gov. WilUtrd wanted to go to the '. S. Seuate, and turned Douglasite. Dan. oorhees wanted to go to Congress, and did le same. Charles Ueuby wanted io go to e Legislature and followed suit. Judge aw wanted to go to Congress and ituitattbe balance of them. And so we might o on and show that the sole object of the arn-coata and political speculators was office. The "original Douglas men " like llavitt, Whittlesey, Edson, Hicks, and Laird knew when they urged his nomination against nil regularity, that he had no earthly chance of being elected , but Gavitt wanted to be sheriff, and Whittlesey representative, and Edson joint representative, and Hicks clerk of Spencer county, and Laird representative from the same county. So Douglas received the nomination at the hands of just such adventurers, not that it was thought ha could be elected, but that it was hoped these political gamblers might win nieu fat, cozy offices, where they could fatten at the people's expense for terms of years, and make it their chief business io perpetuate their lease of office The result of the whole game will be, that they will discover that Douglas is not so strong as they thought him The political Micawbers will look in vain lor something to "turn up " Nothing will turn up bat their faces to the sky figuratively speaking 1 about the Oth day of October. After that time there will be a great many dead politicians. The "original Douglasites" will "go up or descend each to bis appropriate sphere. The pretended Douglas men Willard, Voorhecs, Law, Frary, Denby, McDonald. Dunham, et a I. will desert tbe Douglas humbug, and join the genuine Democratic party that of Breckinridge and Lane. bnlrrfrom Spencer County . Ecreka, sVug. Kith, I860. Editoss Journal: Political trickery and contentions t'orui the chid elements of interest in old Spencer. The dougli-tiiced Democracy nnd the Hards have lieen earnestly engaged, denouncing each other as agitators, secessionists, disunionists, ic. However, their fury has lieen abated for a few days, while the Douglasiteg have been interesting themselves very much in regard to Bell and Everett, especially D. T. Laird aud Dr. Hougland, ruu certainly ought to underjtand all about such tricks, as they have been on every side of politics in the last thresj years. They succeeded so far as to arouse the enthusiasm cf some of the old silver gravWhigs, who called a meeting, or convention as they please to term it, at Rockport on the llth. They congregated at the Court House, and when they began to array themselves, thej- found there were but 6ve Bell men, the rest all being Democrats who bad come up to make a show tor Bell. The Bell men considered themselves sold.disbanded. The aforesaid Dr. Hougland, fearing that such a fizzle would make things worse, started immediately for Enterprise, a small village about 10 miles below Rockport, to make a speech. Quite a number of villagers and farmers assembled to listen, as they supposed, to a Bell speech ; bat judge of tneir surprise and iadignatioD. when he Dr. Hougland j la-
formed theru that he was in fur the Little Giant, which caused considerable consternation amongst the friends of Bell. Although they were-few in number, th-.-y succeeded iu getting quite a sentiment agstiri.'C the Doctor, who is one of those who are unable to think much for themselves, and consequently are likely to get into such dilemmas and seldom know how. to extricate themselves. The Doctor Iras in tiouble ; but after loitering about uctil quite late, he mounted the .-tump, and delivered himself of a speech. After reading a letter from Mr. Fillmore, he spoke at great length of the dangerous doctrines of the Republicans; Bald they were bringing about an equality between the negroes and the whites. He introduced the following as evidence : He said that last winter,, as he was coming from tbe lectures, through the State of Ohio, the first thing he knew the cars were all black with niggers. They came in and seated themselves by bis side, and when he ? topped for refreshments, the first thing he knew the table was dotted all over with them. When be got to Cincinnati they swarmed round him on the streets, crowded women off the walks, 4c. Proof positive against the Republican, wasn't it ? As soon as the Doctor closed, there was a general call for Mr. Wiu. Stateler, who commenced in a very earnest manner, first to show that some men had good cause to fear ne6ro equality, but as for his part hr had no fear of coming to that level. He was a Republican, and did not expect to equalize himself or to be equalized with negroes. He then proceeded briefly to show that although tbe Republican party was a new party, it presented no new principles or motives; that it demanded that the policy traced out by the Fathers of the American Union, for the government of the Union, should now be recognized and pursued by the rulers of the Union; that it taught no new doctrine respecting slavery, liberty, as any other question whatever; that the fundamental principles were the same that were laid down by Thomas Jefferson in 1784, afterward adopted by Congress in 1787, again re-enacted by the first Federal Congress in 1789, and signed and approved by Washington. He proved that the doctrine called Popular Sovereignty was entirely new, especially with the Glossary tbe Dred Scott decision, and that if our Fathers had accepted it as national law, all tbe States west of the Ohio would be slaveholding, and cursed as Virginia and other slave State's'are, with the difficulty of getting rid of an institution that has fastened itself on them. Mr. Stateler interspersed his speech with many anecdotes, and was frequently applauded. When the meeting broke up. Bell's name
wa3 not heard, and we have good reasons to I believe that it was decidedly a Locofoco defeat and a triumph tri favor of Honest Old Ale. Cybus Scates. Item from the Washington correspondence of the Cincinnati Gazette : The progress which Republican principles are making at the South is remarkable. 1 have already adwrtedto the strength it is acquiring in Baltimore. The Slarof Hi is city, :in Administration organ, thus allude? to its advance in the Federal metropolis. The Star's reporter says : " The meeting of the Republican Association last evening at their wigwam, on on the corner of Indiana avenue and Second street, was decidedly the largest and most enthusiastic meeting of tbe kind that has yet beeu held in thut capacious hall. The meeting was addressed by Mr. Iodge, editor of a prominent Republican paper in Minuesota, who spoke for upwards of threequarters of an hour in an ablo and highly interesting manner. "The Republican Glen Club was present in full force, and added to the interest and enthusiasm of the meeting by 1 lie excellent rendition of some of tbe most spirited of their Republican choruses." Arrangements are commenced and perfected tor the organization of a Wide Awake Club, which promises to be eery large in numbers. Numerous accessions were made to the list of members of the association. In Virginia also the party continues to gain ground. The Baltimore Patriot, the Bell organ of Maryland, continues to expose day after day the iufamous nature of tbe attempted fusion in New York, the exposures having a very disastrou ill'ect upon the Bell interest iu Maryland, especially as the country papers supporting Bell are generally taking the same view. Tax Arkansas Election. Col. Hind-nan of Arkansas is re-elected, notwithstanding his own concession, in a dispatch to Washington, that he had been beaten by Cypert. Later returns have settled the question.Mr. Gantt, also a Breckinridge Democrat, is elected in the other district of Arkansas. The majority for Henry W. Rector, lor Governor, over Johnson, (brother of the Senator, ) is 3,000. Both the candidates are Breckinridge men, but Johnson had the regular nomination. There is no doubt that the Electoral vote of Arkansas will be given to Breckinridge and Lane. L Cut . Gaz. CiiA.MiED Sipes. Three of the Douglas electors in Alabama, Messrs. Balling Hall, A. B. Clitherall and Clemens, have renounced the Squatter Sovereignty cause and declared for Breckinridge and Lane. The Fayetteville Carolinian says that D. N. McKay, one of the. sub-electors on the Bell ticket in that district, declares his intention to support Breckinridge. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Tobacco Agency, UOU MAX UFACTl'XEIlS OF Tilt.'' CITY. BY J. G.
