The late Democratic county Convention has, more thau ever, convinced the public that our Sheriff is the ruliug spirit of the Democracy of this county. Without him Douglasi.-ra would be defunct, and the " national succession," the simon-pure democracy, would have control of the party organization. And during the five or six years that he has been a Democrat, while tbere have been none more active in the cau3e, none have done so much to bring about its present demoralized and disorganized condition. His genius and influence in the party has appeared most conspicuous in his management of Democratic Conventions. He has been a very Napoleon in caucuses. His latest effort at Babytown is fresh in the miuds of many disappoiuted Democrats. No one doubts but that it is another of his triumphs in caucusing. Every name on the ticket was arranged by bim before the convention met no action was taken except wi'h his approval and every one of the candidates must sustain bim in bis role or ruin poliVy. Enough is known of this lute convention to give us positive assurance that it is his work. But there is some amusing street talk of his late machinations in another late Convention, which has found its way out side of the party, and which is trueto his inimitable character. It may show disappointed aspirants at Babytown the modus operandi of t heir defent, and make them wiser in future. It will be remembered that early in the canvass, or rather before the canvass was commenced, ther.i was a Democratic Convention held at the Court House to appoint delegates to the Congressional Convention at Princeton. Our readers will recollect we opposed "a scheme concocted by our worthy Sheriff, our ycung Democratic nominee for Representative, and a few other office-hunters, to uominatc Smith Miller. The scheme most signally failed, but tbe manner of its concoction gives us a clear insight into the beauties of the Sheriff's Conventions. The story which we hear on the street, and it is traced back to the Sheriff s own lips a? its author, is about as follows: Before the Convention assembled, the Smith Miller men met in the Sheriffs office, the ions" in place appointed to " receive instruct order to arrange the preliminaries for busi ness. A list ol delegates was banded to tue Sheriff by one of his underlings, which he j merely glanced at, and with an oath indig- ., ...... ... ,, nantly tore ap it uidn t suit him. He forthwith made oat one for himself and told them that was the list of delegates for j Princeton. He arranged the list so as to! have a large majority for Miller but, placed a few delegates ou tbe list, such aa our Collector of Customs, in order to give an air ot lainiess to it, saying they could do no damage at any rate. Quite a u ,. . , .... , number on the list, he had no confidence 1 m, and for fear they might desert him when the test came, theD and there, in the Sheriff"s office he mada them sudd nn their ritrht - - - r hands and take a solemn oath that they would prove true to him and bis man, Mil ler! He had it understood with McB. that when they went into the Convention, and the hour of two o'clock arrived, he (tbe Sheriff) would hold up his watch, whereupon the "City Recorder and EzojUcio Justice of the Peace," waa to move that Dr. Walker take the chair; all of which was done in the most approved style ! Dr. Walker had been furnished by tbe Blwriff

Such is the story which has leaked out of the party caucusses, and that, too, from the lips ot the Sheriff himself, who takes pleasure in boasting over his skill in defeating his opponents in convention, and hoodwinking the honest portions of the Democracy, who never go to the Conventions, and heretofore have been willing to let tbe leaders arrange the nominations for them. We are pleased to know, however, that his political days are about numbered, j He has over-reached himself. The late convention at Babytowa constitutes the climax of his caucus life. The people are determined that he, and all who are willing to accept such nominations as he has given them, shall be defeated. The county will be happily well rid of such political tricksters and caucuses. The Court House will have a purer atmosphere when they are out View oftlie "Illustrious Dead tbe slavery Question. upon Many of the Douglas Democrats are in the habit of referring to Clay and Webster to support their creed on the slavery question. A few quotations from these gentlemen, placed in juxtaposition with the views of the apostles of modern Democracy, will illustrate their M-veral opinions, and prove a slight discrepancy between those of the dead statesmen ,ud the livinp demagogue. In a speech lelirareu in the United State o -ii .1 . j i aeuuie, nir. ia.v mus expressed U13 opposi- ; lion to me extension or slavery into lerrritory still free: "So long as God allows the vital current to flow through my vein9, 1 will never, never, nevkh, by word or thought, by mind or will, aid in admitting one rod of free territory to the everlasting curse of human bondage." Again, in a debate in the Senate in 1850, be said : "Coming, as I do, from a slave State, I owe it to niyselt, I owe it to the subject, I owe it the truth, to say that no earthly power could induce me to ask for a specific measure for the introduction of slavery where it had not before existed, either South or North of that line." Again, be says : " Slavery is a social and political evil, and uo earthly power shall make me vote to plant it where it does not exist.' Mr. Webster, in his celebrated 7th of March speech, gave utterance to this significant language: "Sir, wherever there is a particular good to be alone wherever tbere is a foot of land to be staid from becoming slave territory I am readw to assert tbe principle of the exclusion ot slavery. I am pledged to it from the year 1837 ; I have been pledged to it again and again ; and I will perform these pledges." In his Marshfield speech, in 1848, Mr. Webster said : "If, my friends, the term 'free soil' party, or 'free soil' man is meant to designate oue who has been fixed unalterably to-day, yesterday, and some dayg past in opposition to slavery extension, then I may claim to be,aod may hold myself to be, as good a ' free soil ' man as any member of that Buffalo Convention. The above are the views of these great men iu regard to the extension of slavery. Here is what Mr. Webster had to say in 1848, in a speech in the TJ. S. Senate, when discussing the question of property in slaves, in its application to the Territories. " Tbe real meaning, then, of Southern gentlemen, in making this complaint, is, that they cannot go into the Territories of tbe United States, carrying with them their own peculiar local law, a law which creates ptoperty in persons. It will not he contended that this sort of personal slavery exists by general law. It exists only by local laic. " And wherever that local law does not extend, property in persons does not exist. Well, sir, what is now the ! demand on the part of our Southern friends? j They say, 'we will carry our local laws with us wherever we go: we insist that ; Coneress does us injustice, unless it estab j j.h in the territories in which we wish to go our own local law." Thi.i demand I, for on resi' and shall resist.'' Douglas claims that he occupies the same groun(1 on g,arery queiUon that ,;lnv amj Webster did. Here are tbe sentiments, in brief, of Mr. Douglas on that subject : "I don't care whether slavery is voted down or up in Kansss. Comment is unnecessary. Hendrick's ana State Policy. It has been an old cu3tom for Democratic orators to talk glibly ot economy in the management of State affair?, and the Deni- , j. , . .- , -n u : ocratic candidate tor Governor, T. A. Hendricks, must needs follow the illustrious examples that have been set for him by Willard and the other economical Governors who have made Inaiana wbat she is the great and growing State. Hendricks has charged the Republican party with extravagance, wben he knows, and every man knows, that tbe Republicans have had no opportunity of gratifying their desire to spend the money of the State. He thinks to deceive the people by charges made in a covert manner, and by boasts of economy Ofl bis side, yet his friends fear that iu this he will fail. The Economist took tbe MI:-! PREMIUM .rOR THE BEST OOKING 8TOVK FOR WOOD, ta'x-lker, Klusman&Co took the first premium for their cooking stove for coal. No other premiums were offered. The largo silver medal waa awarded to the Economist at the New York tttato Fair; and the firtt premium at the United Stale, Fair held at Chfcage, and twelve other State ana County Fairs in 185'.). In no branch of mechanical art has there Iweu t more apparent advance than in tue manufacture of stoves. It is bnt a few years since the very name was a novelty, representing a huge, shapeless structure, almost as devoid ol use as ornainpiit, These have gradually given place to patterns of grace and utility ; until tbe varieties our markets now present have almost exhausted the vocabulary of names; and tbe different phases the metal is made to assume, would astonish old Vulcan himself. In style and finish, the improvement has been real, leaving nothing to bo desired on that point, but the sever? competition in price, to which they have been subjected, has deprived them of many of the more substantial qualities dusirable. This seems more especially to have been the case in reference to cook stoves an article of domestic economy that has more to do with scolding wives and crotcheiy servants than most people imagine. The public have long sought an imnroveI ment in tbis article, and we believe are ready to pay 1 any reasonable price for a cooking stove, If it only j peesesseH the merits of size, weight, convenience, j durability, economy, and pcrfoction of manufacture. These qualities sem to be possessed most fully iu I the Econ .mist anew stove, perfected and b rough, j out the past season, by Messrs. Treadwcll, Perry A Norton, of Albany. We heard so much of thla I stove, and it looked so much like a stove Intended I for use, that we concluded to try them, and tbjs J result of the experiment convinces us that the ; prourieturs, in their determination to make the beat 1 store in the world, have succeeded. We regard the ! Economist as possessing all the merits above enunierated as the great stove of the day far in advance of anything ever attempted iu the lino oi I stoves, perfect in all its appointments, aud true to I its name in durability and the use of fuel. Among the many conveniences attached to it, may be men j tioned a largo oven, w ith hooks arranged, for suspending meats while roasting. A copper water . tank, holding from 12 to 95 gallons warming j closet, broiling hearth, ,tc, Ac. The broiling hearth is one of the most noticeable features of this j remarkable stove. Then never baa been, to war Kuowledge, any broiling Oxture that was reany. isfactorv iu iu oii-ration. The. proprietors of J stove have been conducting a aeries of experimenl upoo broiling, eliciting some valuable facts, and re suiting in the iuventiou of a gridiron adapted u tbis stove, which has been secured by leturs patent. and is one of the most admirable tilings 01 ine Kino we ever saw broiling without smoke, and keeping the coals in a coustaut glow.
