ARRIVED. Poland, Lou.: Dunbar, Paducah: Marmora, Pittsburg: Time, Louisville: Anglo Saxon, Pitts.: Sallie List, Louisville: L. C. Ferry, Lou.: Gen. Pike. Memphis: DEPARTED. Poland, Cairo: Dunbar, Paducah. Marmora, St. Louis: Time, Tennessee river: Anglo Saxon, N. O.: Sallie List, Cairo: Gen. Pike, Lou.: L. C. Ferry, Louisville: W. V. Gillum, Green river. BOATS LEAVING TO-DAY. Grey Eagle, jr., Lou.: Lue Eaves, B. Green: Gen. White, Henderson. ——— ......The <Weather>, yesterday, was quite warm, and alternately clear and cloudy. Although there was a fine shower the day before, we have not had enough yet and hope for more. ......The <River> opposite this point, was still swelling very rapidly yesterday evening, having risen about 18 inches during the proceeding 24 hours. Our despatches report the river rising again at Pittsburg, with 4 feet 8 inches in the channel. At Cincinnati, at noon yesterday the river had fallen 15 inches during the 24 hours previous, and there were then 8 feet 4 inches in the channel. In the Canal at Louisville 4 feet 8 inches are reported, and the river declining slowly. There are 5 1/2 feet on Scuffletown, and about the same on the worst bars hence to Cairo. Capt. Fowler, of the <Dunbar> reports a rise of 20 feet in the Tennessee, and a heavy rise in the Cumberland. As the Kanawha, and other tributaries of the upper Ohio, head near these rivers, we may expect another rise from them. ......<Business> at this point continues very dull, owing to the high rates of freight and the unwillingness of holders to ship. ......The light, fleet, and beautiful steamer <Grey Eagle>, the calliope boat, is the regular U. S. mail packet for Louisville, and all way landings, at 6 o'clock this evening. Capt. A. Donnelly, a very gentlemanly and efficient officer, treads the hurricane deck, while Mr. J. A. Lusk, assisted by Messrs. Voris and Donnelly, has charge of the office. Her passengers, when they have arrived at their journey's end, will regret that they have no further to go by such a delightful conveyance and in such pleasant company. ......The <Lue Eaves>, Capt. A. Liter, master, and Jno. Travis, clerk, is the regular U. S. mail packet for Bowling Green and all points on Green river at 6 o'clock this evening. The <Eaves> is a very neat little craft, and O. K. in all her appointments. ......The Captains of the Louisville district had a preliminary called meeting Tuesday to form a Captains' Association similar to that of New Orleans. They are to meet again on Saturday for a full and permanent organization, ......The Cincinnati pnpers say that the various organizations of the Captains' Association are rigidly adhering to the new rates adopted by the Louisville Convention. ......The Cincinnati <Enquirer> says that it is rumored that the <Grey Eagle>, Capt Donnelly, will return to that place, and enter the Cincinnati and Maysville trade. The <Grey Eagle> is the most fleet and handsomest of our local packets, and we hope she may be induced to stay with us. ......We are under obligations to Gus. Galamet, bar keeper of the <Dunbar>, and to Messrs. Austin and Gregg, clerks of the <L. C. Ferry> for late Paducah, Louisville, and New Albany papers. ......The forlorn looking old <W. V. Gillum> which has been lying at the wharf for several weeks, raised steam yesterday, and departed for Green river with a very good trip of freight. ......Capt. Bulkley's new Red river boat, now in the process of construction, has been named the <Dixie>, instead of <Malta>, as first proposed. This name is becoming quite popular among boatmen. We hear of several other new boats called by it. ====== THE VOTE OF NEW YORK.—The New York Courier and Enquirer says ; Beyond all cavil, the vote of New York, if cast for Lincoln, elects him by the people ; and just as certain as we now write, so certain is it that this State will give the Republican ticket an overwhelming vote. Mr. Seward says four times twenty thousand ; and we suy a larger majority over all, if the contemplated union is effected, than will be our plurality if each faction votes honestly for its nominees. What we most desire, to render the approaching canvass as exciting as it will be important and interesting, is precisely such union of the factions opposed to the Republican party as the Herald and its associates are seeking to produce. For the Statk Ce.vtral, Committee. The Vincennes Gazette makes the following suggestion in regard to the making of appointments for speakers, to the State Ceutral Coramitte : "If the State Central Committee would leave the appointments of the public speakers to the several Congressional District Committees, more good could lie accomplished than by the present arrangement. Each District Committee knows the wants of its own District. We throw this out as a suggestion. By this arrangement no clashing of appointments would occur." We fully indorse the above. The suggestion is both si-usible and practicable. X'.A. Tribune. These are our sentiments, too. Albert G. Riddle of Cleveland has been nominated for Congressman by the Republicans of the Nineteenth District.

Whisky steady at 21 The August Election. la the campaign of 1850 our position was such thnt we were daily blessed with the perusal of numerous letters from the South. We supposed our sources of information to he remarkably pood, and being constantly in receipt of the inoat confident assurances that most of tiie Southern States were sure for the American ticket, we frequently published portions of that correspondence for the delectation of our readers. All through I that long aud exciting campaign we were promised the united support ot the South. The South appreciated moderate views and men. The South would not see them sacrificed, aud if we here would only breast the storm of Northern sectionalism, they would look out for Southern sectionalism. Nice promises were these, and we believed them eagerly. We made our readers believe them, and were both deceived together. By and by came the August elections, and we began to search the telegraphic columus for our victories. Keutucky, gallant Kentucky, was sure to redeem its word. But it didn't. Missouri, there could be no doubt about her. But there was. North Carolina, the Old North State, sure as shooting for Fillmore but somehow that went Democratic too. So it went ai 1 our castles in Spain faded like sunset gtoriX We couldn't give it up. We wrote to these good Southern friends of ours, the gist of our letters being, " What the deucr, does it all uieau?" And they wrote back that these State elections had all turned on local issues. In November it would be very different, and we should have States enough to carry the election into the House, which by that time had grown to he the only hope. When November came, Maryland voted for Fillmore, and every other of these Southern States which, had made such brilliant promises, slumped through and went for Buchanan. We have revive: these reminiscences, painful as they are, because they involve a good lesson for the present campaign. It is this: The South is Democratic, and all hopes based on Southern promises wili turn out deceptive. We are just gettiDg the first installment of this. There was North Carolina, where the old Whigs and Americans were strong, and where the conservative sense is much more apparent than in most other Southern States ; North Carolina, which was quoted by Mr. Macomber, on Saturday night at Aurora, a9 sure for ; Bell and Everett, has just gone Democratic j by from 7,000 to 10,000 majority. This happens in the face of a very active campaign, in which the conservatives had the j advantage of a popular local issue. In ArI kansas, which we have been told was sure i for Bell and Everett, there is hardly a ripi pie ngainst the Democracy. In Missouri, j we can only gather that the fight is close, , the Republicans and Bell men there being ! united on Mr. Orr, while the Democracy are j almost a unit on C. F. Jackson. In Kent . .. .. i . .t.... r .. . i : .. ...... v. . i i l lie u. , r uujr iimi. J.'. , . vvmwj ...... us I elected. He is a true old big, a noble ' and a gallant man. He baa the support of : the Bell partv aud practically of the Douglas men, the latter heingdownon McClarty, the regular Democratic candidate, who is a r. i. Now what consolation is there in all this for the Hell men ? Missouri, if carried at all, will be carried by a joint action of Republicans and Americans, which cannot be maintained in November. Kentucky may elect Combs, owing to Democratic divisions, but the Douglas men will vote for their own candidate in November. And the end will be that we shall have 1856 over again, line promises and no fulfillment. There was then no reliance to be placed on the South. Nothing better can be expected now, and should not Lincoln be elected by the people, all the trading which is going on will i terminate in getting Douglas into the House instead of Bell. Our sanguine American tiieuds will tind themselves left out in the wet, ionotuiniously cheated aud thoroughly disgusled with all coalitions with Douglas Democracv. Bvf. Com. Advertiser. The contest iu Pennsylvania is waking up. Foote shortly takes the field for Douglas. Hon. Wm. L. Yancy and Hon. Henry A. Wise will, it is said, go there to advocate the claims of Breckinridge. Among those who are to address the people in favor of Lincoln and Hauilia, the Philadelphia Press hears the names of Hon. William H.Seward, Hon. Daniel Uliman, and Hon. Horace Greeley of New York, Frank Blair of Missouri, Hon. Ben. Wade and Hon. John Sherman of Ohio.
