The Enquirer consoles itself with the thought that there were not more than 1500 or 2000 people present at C. M. Clay's speech on Wednesday night, and that the editors think it wa3 not the largest political gathering ever in this city. Also that a large part of the crowd were ladies, and that many persons went to $e Mr. Clay, not to hear him. This is all very poor consolation lor the Enquirer and its friends. In regard to the number present, there were as many as could crowd sufficiently near to hear the orator. That is enough forull useful purposes. The ladies, although they can't vote, influence votes ; and we noticed in runny a flashing eye amongst them the light of admiration for the brave soldier who has suffered for his country, the gallant gentleman, and the intrepid vindicator of free speech in the midst of impending and deadly perils. The ladies lovesuch qualities, and no partizau and groundless cry of "Abolitionist" will lessen their admiration for the gifted orator who addressed them. Consider the ladies for Cassius If. Clay. As to those persons who went to see ind not to hear Mr. C, we noticed that very tew left before his speech was concluded not even the member of the two Democratic factions, ana those pretended Bell and Everett Ipnders, but real Douglas stool pigeons Hike the Guerrailla Editor of the Enquirer), to a'! of whom r.!. Clay's words were like red-hot coals. Meeting lia Union Township. There was a Republican meeting at Catlett's School House, Union Tow nship, nearly opposite Henderson, Ky., on Thursday evening. The Lincoln and Hamliu Glee Club went down : also several other citizens of this place. When tbey Arrived on the ground they found over fifty of tbs voters of the township waiting. The school-house wa? full, aud a number of rjercons were gatberr d outside. Aboot nine o'clock the exercises wore commenced by the singing of an inspiring song, which stirrf.l up the fire? of political feeling that ued to burn so brightly when Union Township gained the banner for giving the mrgest Whig vote of any township in Vanderburgh County. After the song, Jamesi G. JiSnfs, Esq., of this city entertained the audience for over an hour with a speech replete with convincing argument and entertaining anecdote. The speech cannot fail of having a salutary effect upon those pr.-sent. The old Whigs who hive always opposed Sham Democracy were convinced that the best way now to make their votes count is to vote for Lincoln and Hauilin, the only candidate with "whom the double-headed Gorgon of Democracy can bo exterminated. Those honest, well meaning Democrats who mean to do right, but have been deceived :tnd lietrayed by their designing leaders, had their eyes opened, and we warrant that some of them will be turned from the error of their ways by the words apotceo on the occasion we write about. Blythe Hynts, Ki., waa present and intended to speak, but the lateness of the hour prevented. Mr. Jones and Mr. Hyues were both warm Fillmore men in 1350, and those ot the audience who fought by their side at thai time knew that they would noi now be advocating the claims of Lincoln if they were not ture that he .-tnds on the good old Whig ground in regard to the nou-exlen-sion of slavery and other issues. The meeting was closed about half-p:tst (en o'clock, by another song from the Glee Club. On their way home, the Glee Club made the woods ring with Republican music somethicg nsvr down there, but destined to become as familiar as the rippling of the waters of the lovely Ohio.

B5The Enquirer copies an article from the Cababa (Ala.) Slave-holder, showing that Douglas is regarded there as an Abolition candidate. It comes with much grace from that party, to call Lincoln men " Abolitionists," doesn't it ? We ask the Douglasites, how about that cry of sectionalism against the Republicans? Why don't you howl it as you did in 1856 ? Let U3 hear how it will sound now. Lincoln said to Douglas in 1858 Whatever may be the result of this ephemeral contest between Judge Douglas and myself, I see the day rapidly approaching when his pill of sectionalism, which he has been thrusting down the throats of Republicans for years past, will be crowded down his own throat." Prophetic words !

Where Mr. Bnchanau stands. The Detroit Free Fret is now and lias been since 1857 a violent Douglas sheet. Immediately after Mr. Buchanan's election in 185G, that paper thu.s ?ppculatel on tho ; course he would pursue : 'His Administration will not be for the South as against the North, nor for the North as against the South If there be men in the South who hare schemes for the intension of slavery by virtue of the new angled doctrine that the Constitution carries slavery into all the territories of the Union, they will find in Mr. Buchanan no sympathizer. He ' does not believe in the dortrin'. He contemns ; tt.'' Don t Democratic papers make admirable prophets? Let the people bear in mind that they are turned prophets again. Stay The editors of the Enquirer say they don t know anything about a Democratic meeting being held in a certain office on Third street. We hope the party is not " filing things up " without posting "the organ.'' Although one ot the Enquirer editors may have been ruled off a certain committee, as reported, we do not think it fair for the Court House Clique to be holding meetings and getting out candidates without consulting the managers of uthe organ." It mightprodtice discord if persisted in. Already there is considerable wheezing and squeaking to be heard. Club Meeting luSpeucer Coual). At r meeting of the Republicans of Luce township, Spencer county, Ind., held nt Eureka, July 21st, 1860, for the purpose of forming a Republican Club, S. N. Barnett was called to the chair, and Simon Miller, appointed Secretly. A motion to apnoint a committee to draft resolutions wu carried, nod the chair appointed John Scatnmahorn, John I . Gardner, John Linegar, Ilichard Walters, and Robert Crowder said committee, nrbe reported the following resolutions : Resolved, That we, the Republicans of Luce township, form an organization, to be styled "The Luce township Republican Club," for the purpose of advancing the cause of Republicanism. Resulted, That the chair appoint a committee of three, whose duty it shall be to procure "Republicau tracts." and distribute the same throughout the townihip during the present campaign. Resolved, That we, the Republicans of Luce township, heartily indorse the nominations of Abraham Lincoln of Illinois, and Hannibal Hamlin of Maine, by the National Republican Convention at Chicago, for the offices of President and Vice President of the United States, and pledge ourselves to their hearty support. Resolved, That the doctrines and principles laid down in the platform, and adopted hy the National Republican Convention at Chicago, fully meet our approbation. Resolved, That we will use all honorable means to .secure the success of the Republican State and county tickets. Rescind, That the Club meet every other Saturday at 4 o'clock p. m. to transact the business of the Club. All of which were unanimously adopted. The Chair appointed J. O. Gardener, Lewis W. Julv 25, 1860. Editors Journal: Your people have douhtiess had their laugh, as ours have, abundantly, at the great and wonderful disappointment our Democratic friends sustained a week ago. You doubtless saw the SentitifT s tool statement of " 20,000 Democrats in Council," when in fact the procession was leis than a square and a half 'ong ; and you have perhaps noticed, too, what abundant capital Goodwin of the American makes of it, as material for fun. Berry Suigrove hit it exactlv when he called it. in his leader of the following day, a portentous fizzle, ' and Foudray, our Ex-Sheriff, was not far wroug when lie called it " u great mortification meeting." But apart from all badinage, perhaps the bad luck of the Democrats in getting up a ratification meeting, ought to be suggesiivtU the Republicans. May it not be true tlmt the people, in their sober thought, whether second or first, are forming their opinions, and arriving at their conclusions, with less aid than formerly from the machinery of Conventions aud ratification meetings, and speeches ot demagogues ? And if so, is there any true citizen, of :tuy party, wbo will regret it ? The capital is thriving this seatou in a steady, quiet way, but one that indictates actual and substantial growth. The new owners of the Canal are furnishing as tine water power as could be desired, and enough of it, so far K3 the present writer can judge, to turn all the wheels in Lowell. Indianapolis gracefully yields the palm to Evansville iu all matters pertaining to commerce, but means to maintain a generous rivalrv with her in manufactures. The Public Schools closed a term of five months, on the 6th inst., winch exhausted the public funds, and leaves the eight commodious bouses, with accommodations for some 1 700 scholars barred up, for another indefinite period, to goon their way to de- :

ray, idle and empty. The examinations at t ie close of the recent term were highly satisfactory, and showed valuable results, especially m view of tho fact that they had been disbanded for three years. With only one or two exc eptions, the corps of teachers employed, proved themselves highly efficient and faithful. Our City Council, who, by the wuy, are much more zealous for the material than the intellectual progress of the city, have voted the Lee & Lavued Steam Fire Engine, a disappointment, and have taken the initiative toward purchasing one of the Latta make. We don't intend to burn up berious'.y, if we can help it. You have heard of the death of that Ne::tor of editors, the venerable old Gales, senior editor of the National Intelligencer. Perhaps the demise ot no one of your numerous ind highly respectable fraternity, would create a more profound sensation of regret through the length and breadth of the land. Few of you perhaps can hope to reach so goodly au age, and fewer still to gain so honored a place in the estimation of the wise and conservative of j our generation. But at any rate his example is before you all, and those of you who select such men to be your models, and follow their example with iuilustry and perseverance, will reap your reward, even if you do not equal your prototypes. I notice the local of our Journal surmises that the Intelligencer will now materially change it." character, or possibly go out altogether. If it can be improved, let it be, but I trust the day is far distant when the latter suppostiou will be verified. CertaiDly there must be, in Washington or elsewhere, some worthy man to receive the mantle of the departed veteran, and to perpetuate his influence and usefulness Yours, Scribe.

-still the- Come. Hon. John S. Davis of New Albany in announcing himself as an independent candidate for Congress in tbe second Congressional District, publishes the following exposition of his views on the Presidential question. Mr. Davis is an old Whig, and his opinions are certainly entitled to some credit among the Fillmore men in that section : A3 we are on the eve of a Presidential election, the first inquiry, naturally is, in relation to my Presidential preferences. On this subject, as well as on all others, 1 have no concealment at all. I prefer Co). Bell of Tennessee ; and if my vote would elect him, I would cheerfully give it, and feel that in doing so, I was in the performance of a patrotic duty. Col. Bell is a Whig, and is at once, one of the purest men, and most enlightened statesmen in the land. He belonged to the same school politically, with Mr. Clay. While my preferences for Col. Bell are strong, I would not feel it to be my duty to advocate and urge his election in a contest plainly narrowed down in this State between other candidates : or where my vote for him would only aid in the election of ! tbe author ot tbe slavery agitation, in a contest between Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Doug- ! las, I would favor the former, as his views I in relation to the tariff, and the improveI uient of our great western rivers, and, upon I many othersubjects, are identical with those of Col. Bell, both having Whig antecedents. In truth, I do not regard the opinions of Mr. ; Breckinridge, as half so dangerous to the j peace and prosperity of the country as : those of Mr. Douglas. The friends of the ! former entertain views, which are, 1 think, ; erroneous: but they propose to test them in ! the courts, and if necessary, by Congress, ! looking all the while to a peaceful and law- ' ful adjudication, without violence. The 1 views of Mr. Douglas in relation to our I Territories, if carried out necessarily lead ; to strife and blood-shed, such as were ex- ! hihited in Kansas. Emigraut aid societies 1 on the one hand, and Border Ruffians, on the other will follow. It is safe to judge j of the future by the past.
