The census of our city is not yet completed, and i!' it were the ofli- j cers are not allowed to reveal the facia they have ascertained till they are officially di- i rulged at Washington, but enough has been ; ascertained, we understand, to furnish abasis for a guess that our population will reach about 20,000, possibly less, probably little more. At all events it will surely tall below the extravagant estimates of those who have been putting it at 30,000, or in that elevated region. e hffve believed it could exceed 25.000. Our vote lias uever furnished the foundation for a larger estimate, and the excess of young men with votes and without families, who are always to be found in a city like this, makes the usual estimate of population to voters likely to exceed rather than fall short of the truth. Let us all make up our minds to be content with 20,000. If the full census shows that we are 5,000 further up, we shall have room to indulge in an agreeable surprise. Intl. Jour. Col. THE CHICAGO PbATPORJl, AS AHESDFD ASD ADOPTED. Eewlred, That we, the delegated representatives of the Republican electors of the United States, in Conveuli.li tn n-Mill, la the discharge of the duty we owe to our constituents and our country, unite in the following; declarations : 1st. That tbe history of tbe n ition during the last tour years, has fully established the propriety and necessity of tb" organ Iratioa and perpetuation ot the Kepuldieaii p'irty ; and that the causes which
called it into existence are permanent in their nature, and now, more than ever laifore, demand its peaceful and constitutioual triumph. C. That the maintenance of tbe principles promulgated in the Declaration of Independence and embodied in the Federal Constitution " That all men are created equal ; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights ; that among these arc lite, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness ; that to secure these rights, govern meuts are instituted among men, deriving their just poortrs from the consent of the governed" is essential to the preservation of our Republican institutions ; and that the Federal Constitution, the Rights of the States, and the I'uion of the States must and shall be preserved. I 3. That to tbe Union of the States this nation owes its unprecedented increase in population, its surprising development of material resources, its rapid augmentation of wealth, its happiness at homo and its honor abroad ; and we hold in ab horrence all ism Mil ,'or Disunion, come from wh.it- , ever source they may : And we congratulate thj i country that no Republican member of Congress ! has uttered or countenanced tbe threats of Disi union so often made by Democratic members, with- ; out rebuke and with applause lim their political ' associates; and we denounce those threats of dis- ' union, in case of a popular overthrow of their as. j cendency as denying the vital principles of a free : government, and as an avowal of CPU teas plated i treason, which it is the imp-r.tiive duty ot an indignant People sternly to rebuke end forevei sij lence 4. That tbe maintenance inviolate of tbe Sights of the States, and especially the right of each Mate to oider and control its own domestic Institutions according to its own judgment exclusively, is essential to that balance of powers on wbieJi the pi r- ' fection and endurance of our political fabric depends ; and we denounce the lawless invasion by arnifcd force of the soil of any Stat" or Territory, no matter under what pretext, as among thegr.c. est f crimes. g 5. That tbe present Dem senile Adminlstrat ion uas far exceeded our worst apprehensions, in its measureless subserviency to tbe exactions of a sectional interest, as especially evinced in its desperate exertions to force tbe infamous Lecampton i mistitution upon the protesting people of Kansas ; in construing the personal relation between master and .-ervant to imol.c an unqualified property in persons ; in its attempted enforcement, ever wbei e on land and sea, through the intervention of Congress and of lbs Federal Courts, of tho extreme pretensions of a purely local interest ; and in its general and unvarying abuse of tbe power intrusted to it by a confiding i-e,.ple. 6. Tuat tbe People justly view with alarm ilm reck less extraeaganre w bicfa iervades every department of the Federal Government 1 that a re turn to rigid economy and accountability i bfedispeoaabie to arrest l be systematic plunder of tbe public tr.'.sury by favored pat lisoin . while tbe recent startling developments of frauds and corruptions at tbe IV.!eral Metropolis, show that an entire change of administration is imperatively demanded. 7. That ho new dogma lhat the Constitution, oi Its own force, carries Slavery into any or all of the Territories of the Un-ted Mates, is a dangerous political heresy, at variance with the explicit pio j visions of that instrument itself, with contemporaaeons exposition and vith legislative and judicial precedent ; is revolutionary la its tendency, and subversive ot the peace and harmony of the country. H. That the normal condition of all ihe Territory ot tbe Cnited States is thai of freedom- That aour Republican lathers, when tbey bad abolished slavery in all our national territory, ordained thai " no person should be deprived of life, liberty, .-r property, without due process of law' it becomes ur dnt-, by legislation, whenever such legislation is necessary, to maintain this provision of the Oon stitnl Ion against all attempts to violate it ; and o deny the authority of Congress, of a territorial leg Islet are, or of any Individuals, to giv legal existence to Slavery in any Territory of the United States. '.I. That we brand tbe recent le-opeliillg of the African Slave-Trade, under tbe cover of our N itlonal Flag, aided by perversioas of judicial power, as a crime against Humanity and a burning sbattie to our Country and Age ; and we call upon t long ress to take prompt and efficient measures for the total ami final suppression of that execrable traffic. HI. That in tho recent vetoes, by their Federal Governors, of tbe acts td the Legislatures of Kansas and 'ebaka, prohibiting slavery in those Territories, we find a practical il'iistration of tbe boasted Democratic principle of Sinn-Intervention
never awn opmar ciovcrcigiiiy nssuttiei in tne ivhii.-.i-Nebraska bill, and a demonsti alion -t the deception
and fraud involved therein. il. That Kansas should, of tight, be immediately admitted as a State under tbe Constitution recently formed and adopted by her people, and accepted by the House of Representatives). That, while providing revenue for the support of ffie general rovernmeat by duties upon imports, sound policy requires such an adjustment of these imposts as to encourage tbe development of the Industrial interests of the whole country ; and we commend lhat policy of national exchanges, which secures to the worVing men liberal wages, to agriculture remunerating prices, to mechanics and manufacturers an adequate r, srard for their ski!, labor, and enterprise and to tbe uat ion commercial prosperity and independence. lo. That we protest against any s ilo or alietiatioti to others ot the Public Lands held by actual ! settlers, and against any view of tbe Flee Home- j stead policy which regards tho settlers as paupers i or suppliants for public bouuty ; and we demand 1 the passage by Congress of th complete and satis- j factory Homestead measure which has already pas--ed the House. 14. That the Republican party Is opposed to any j change in our Naturalization Laws, or any State legislation by which tbe rights of citizenship hith- j erto accorded to immigrants from foreign lands ahatl be abridged or Impaired ; and in favor of givtig a full and efficient protection to tbe rights ot all classes of citizens, whether native or natural- ! ized, both at home and abroad. 15. That appropriations by Cougress for River I aud Harbor improvements of a National diameter. required for the accommodation and security of an ... i . r . i - : -1 .- flrp ,'i'V ' 7. ! by the Const 1 tution, and justified by the obligation of Govern ment to protect tbe lives and property of its citizens. lti. That a Kai I road to the Pacific Ocean is imperatively demanded by tin interests of the whole country; that the Federal Government ought to render immediate and efficient aid in Its conetruction ; and that, hs preliminary thereto, a daily Overland Mall should be promptly eetabllahecL 17. Finally, having thns set forth our distinctive principles and views, we invite tbe co-op-rat ion ot all citizens, however differing on other quesTionn, who substantially sgree with us in their nttirmance and support. Above we presont you with a perfect likeness of Tizuco. ajrhief of a trlle of the strange Aztec Nation, that once ruled Mexico. You will find a full account of him in our pamphlets and Almsnacs to be had gratis from the Agents for these Pills. Tho inventor and manufacturer of "Judson's Mountain Herb Pills " hat spent the greater part of his life in traveling, having visited nearly every country in tho world. U ..pent over six years among the Indians of the Uocky Mountains and of Mexico, and it was thus that the M Mountain Herb Pills" were discovered. A very interesting account of bis adventures there you will find tn our Almanacs and Pamphlets. It is an established faot that all diseases arise from IMPURE BLOOD I The blood Is the life ; and when any foreign or unhealthy matter gets mixed with it, it is at once distirbuted to every organ of the body. Every nsrvs feels tbe poison, and all the vital organs quickly complain. The stomach will not digest the food perfectly. Tho liver ceases to secrete a sufficiency of bile. The action of the heart is weakened, and so the circulation is weakened. TI e lungs become clogged with the poisonous matter; hence, a congh and all from a slight impurity at the fountain head of life the Blood 1 As if you had thrown some earth, for instance, in a pure spring, from which ran a tiny rivulet in a few minutes the wholo course of tho stream becomes disturbed and discolored. As quickly does impure blood fly to every part, and leave its sting behind. All the passages become obstructed, and unless the obstruction is removed, tho lamp of life soon diesouc. These Piils not only purify the blood, but regenerate all the seen tions of the body. Tboy are. therefore, unrivaled as a CURE FOR BILIOUS DISEASES, Liver Complaint, 8ick Headache, tc. This AntiBilious Medicine oxpols freni the blond the hidden Bceds of disease, and renders all the fluids and secretions pure and fluent, clearing aud resuscitating the vital organs. Pleasant, iudoud, is it to us, that wo are able to place within your reach a medicine liko ihe " Mountain Herh Pills," that will pass directly tri the afflicted parts, through the blood and fluids of the body, and cease the sufferer to brighten with the flush of Ieauty and health. Judsou's Pills are the best remedy In existence fo r the following complaints: Bowel Complaints, Coughs, Colds, Chest Diseases, Costiveness, Dyspepsia, Diarrhoea, Dropsy, Debility, Fever and Ague, Female Complaints, Headaches, Indigestion, Influenza, Inflammation, Inward Weakness, Liver Complaints, Lowness of Spirits, Stone aud Gravel, Piles, and Secondary Symptoms. GREAT FEMALE MEDICINE I Females who value health, should never be without these Pills. They purify the blood, remove obstructions of all kinds, cleanee the skin ol all plm pies and blotches, and bring the rich color of health to the pale cheek. The plants and herbs of which these Pills are mado, were discovered, in a very surprising way, among the Tezui ans, atribuoi Aborigines in Mexico. Get the Almanuc of our Agent, a?d you wit I read with delight tho very interesting acconnt it contains of the "Groat Medicine" of tbe Aztecs. OBSERVE. The Mountain Herb Pills are put up in a beautiful wrapper. Each Box contains Hi pills, and Retail at Vi5 cents per box. All genuine have the signatureof B. L. Judsou & Co., on each box.
