Editors Journal. By your permission, I give such of your readers as may desire to visit the Springs a short description of my trip to this place. We left Evansville at 9J o'clock on the morning of the 10th, and reached the crossings at Vincenues at l'o'clock, where we partook of a very good dinner for the moderate sum of 25 cents. I speak of this, because travelers have frequently to pay 50 cents for worse accommodations. The towns along the way, Lagrauge, Princeton, and Patoka, all present the appearance of progress, I noticed much improvement since my visit to these places last year. The crops along the route look very fine, with the exception of the corn in portions of Vanderburgh, Gibson, and Knox, which does not look so well. That, however, on the Wabash and White river bottoms i3 very fine, and I have no doubt but all will eventually turn out an abuuduut crop. We were delayed at Vinceunes nearly two hours waiting for the train going East. We, however, endeavored to pass off the time as best we could by talking politi'-?, blackberrying, &c. We got on board the cars on the O. c M. R. R. at 2 o'clock for the Shoals. Faro $1 30. The accommodations on this road are fine the cars quite comfortable. They make very good time. There is a great deal of travel on this road. We reached the Shoals at a quarter before 4 o'clock, P. M., some ten miles from the Springs by land. Here we took passage on the magnificent steamer (side wheel) Ji. K. Miter, Capt. Horsey, for Clark's Ferry, a point on the east fork of White River, about four milts from the Indian Springs. We did not however make very fast time, not having the right kind of fuel for making sufficient steam for the power and capacity of the boat. We made the trip, fifteen miles, in about three hours, from whence we took a hack to the Spring?, where we arrived at aboot 9 o'clock at night. Fare, including hack hire, $1 cheap eno-igh. 1 his is much pleasanter than by hack the en tire distance. We thu3 avoided being jolted over the long and tedious hills of Martin county. The scenery along White River z rtry fine, and in some places quite romautic. Capt. Horsey certainly deserves much credit for his enterprise in putting this steamer on the route. It is quite nn accommodation to those visiting the Springs, and then it will do a great deal towards developing the resources of the White River valley, by stimulating the farmers to increase their crops, knowing that they have now superior facilities for reaching market. Those, how ever, who prefer it, will find a hack at the i Shoals ready to convey them to the Springs the entire distance by land, for the same i price. They will thus have au opportunity of seeing the Jug Rock, one of the most ! singular natural curiosities I have ever wit- i nessed, and the exquisite pleasure of a ride j over the rocks and hills of Martin couutj-, ! and of seeing Dover Hill, the county seat of Martin county. There are very few visitors here at present. The accomodations are about as usual. A more pleasant place to spend a few weeks can not be found any where in the country, and I am surprised that so few of our citizens visit this locality. There is rery little said here about politics. This is a Democratic county, as vou know. Fremont received 76 votes in the county in 1856. This year, 1 am assured, Lincoln will receive 500. The " Untrrrified " are principally in favor of the Little Giant. Of Breckinridge and Bell very little is heard. Some of the Douglas Democrats do not like the idea of Bright, that there will be no Democratic candidates in Indiana unless Breckinridge and Lane are run. I heard a Democrat remark that he would vote for Lincoln, providing such silly remarks were made. The announcement of Ji;dge De Bruler's name as the Opposition candidate for Cougres in this district, is very well received here. He is personally very popular in this county, and will run abend of his ticket. He no doubt will stand a very good chance of being elected. The anecdote which arose some years ago in the Indianapolis District, between Whig and Democratic candidates for Congress, about the Ruffle-shirt, fullv illustrates the ingratitude of that portion of the so-called i National Democratic party who now manifest ' a disposition to crowd the Little Uiant off
the track of the Presidential race-course; fi"K s well known that Mr. Lincoln after having sacrificed everything for the was a Whig member of Congrt-ss before be good of the Democratic party. It is true joined a Northern sectional party, as Mr. Douglas doos not care much for the Demo- lireckinridge has subsequently associated cratic party, just so that he can Selected himself with a Southern sectional partyPresident, but that does not make it the less indeed iu the days when the good old Whig ungrateful. This spirit of ingratitude is party stood as the rampart of defence against .inn. cnnfinerl lr fhp Dpmoeratic nartv. the advance of CCOirnmhical factions. "Old
but it frequently manifests itself in all departments of life in the social as well as the business circle, i I presume a majority of your readers have read Mayor Wood's l&tter on the condition of the Democratic party. It will be seen that he considers the election of Lincoln inevitable. B. Coin municatcd. Campaign SougWalt for tUe Wagon. I was but a little shaver, when we lived in Old Kentnck, We had a little piece of ground, and raised a little truck, There poor white folks must labor with the niggers by their side, So wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride. Chorus So wait for the wagon. Oh ! wait for the wagon, Oh ! wait for the wagon And we'll all take a ride ; Oh 1 wait for the wagon And we'll all take a ride. The fathers of the nation made a law, had in Congress That slavery should never cross the lovely , Ohio, And father said we'll migrate to the Indiana side, So wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride.? Chorus So wait, &c. Where the freemen do the labor, it's no disgrace to work, The plowboy's respectable,as any merchant's clerk, The honest boy that labors hard, the rich will not deride, So wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride. Chorus So wait &c, We removed to Spencer county, where we lived on Congress land, And at any kind of labor we were glad to take a hand, Our neighbors, though more wealthy, were not stuck up with pride. So wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride. Chorus So wait &c. I made a little wagon when we moved to Illinois, To haul my good old parents, and the little girls and boys, I drove a yoke of oxen, walking barefoot by their side, So wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride. Chorus So wait &;. My wagon, like myself, was rather rough, I could not put' unse irmi so I LuaJe it all of wood, Aud where a band was Deeded, I used a strip of hide. So wait for the wagon, and we'll all take a ride. Chorus. So wait, &c. I was strong and quick in motion, with axes, wauls aud flails, I plowed and hoed in summer, and in winter I made rails; Every night I read aud studied, with my mother for my guide So wait for the wagon, and we 11 all take a ride. Chorus. So wait, &e. Too poor myself to bny a book, I borrowed from my friends, And if per chance I injured one, I always made amends, By making hay or fodder, till my friend was satisfied ; So wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride. Chobcj. So wait, kc. Not willing to be ignorant, 1 studied every llitfht, To cultivate my intellect 1 strove with all my might, And at last I went to Congress with "the Douglas" by my side So wait lor the wagon aud we'll all take a ride. Ciioki's. So wait, &e. When Douglas ran for Senator, I also took the track, And people had a notion that I "sorter sot him back," They Fay his legs are rather short to " foot it " by my side. So wait for the vragou and we'll al! take a ride. Chori'8. So wait, &c. The people had decided that the Democrats must quit, To rule au honest nation they are no longer tit, They say if I'm elected they will " let the Union slide," So wait for the wagou and we'll all take a ride. CuoRt's. So wait kc. The people have invited me before it is too late, To take command a little while ami guide the ship of State. In the Spring I'll go to Washington with Hamlin by my side. So wait for the wagon and we'll all take a ride. (,'noitrs. So wait, &c. A Letter from Warrick Con tit. v. LiYNNViLLE, Iud., July 7th, 1800. The canvass bus fairly opened here. The Lincoln men are scarce in this county, but there is uite an advance in Republican stock since 1850. This has always been the great stronghold of Democracy, and Republicans have been few and far between heretofore. Though not numerous, wc tire hard at work in the cause. Last evening we were visited bj Messrs. Waters and Linegar of Spencer county, and the citizens were addressed by the latter named gentlemen on general political topics. In h's address he proved the corruption of the Democratic parties, and finally closed by saying that it was due to justice and freedom that we rally our forces for the support of Abraham, the " Father of man Nations, who is the great champion of a free press, free speech, and free territory. The Democrats are by no means divided here. They ure h unit on the nominees of the Seceders' Convention, all sending up their terror-trembling voices for Breckinridge and Lane. The Republicans here are very desirous for Judge DeBruler to become the candidate for Oongres.-t ajiainst Judge Law, thinking that his prospects are quite good.Lyk n-ville. Abe's'' Whig record I. as been hunted up
since he became a Presidential caudidate, and hs nothing was to be found objectionable in it, Joe Lane, the Democratic Sect s sion candidate for the Vice Presidency, has resorted to misrepresenting it. In a recent speech, he said : " While your uumble servant was having his arm almost shattered to pieces, and while other good soldiers of this State were battling in defence of their country's honor, Lincoln was over in Washington voting against supplies for the army." We do not believe Lane knew that he was uttering an untrinh, for his knowledge of public men and public events is exceedly limited; indeed he is the least of a statesman of any man ever placed in nomination for the second office in the gift of the people. But when Doughv3 met Lincoln on the stump during the Illinois Senatorial canvass, the former used the following language, which is an explicit contradiction of Lane's assertion : "I never charged him With voting against the supplies in my life, because I knew that he was not in Congress when they were voted. The war was commenced on the 13th of May, 184C, and on that day we ap propriated in Congress ten millions of dollars and lifty thousand men to prosecute it, During the same session we voted more men and more money, so that, by the time Mr. Lincoln entered Congress, we had enough men and enough money to carry on the war, and had no occasion to vote for anv more."
