Dunbar, Paducah: Grey Eagle, Henderson and Louisville. ——— ......The <Weather>, yesterday, was excessively hot, although there was considerable wind all day, which, however, did not seem to have any effect toward cooling the atmosphere. The thermometer is reported to have stood at 100°. ......<Business> at the landing was as brisk as could be expected under such a broiling sun as yesterday glared down upon the scorching levee. The <Charley Bowen> went out with a fair trip. There has been no change in the shipping rates. The <Bowen> took 95 hhds of tobacco at $6.00 and a lot of corn at 30c. ......The <River>, by latest accounts from above, is still receding at Pittsburg, with 5 to 6 feet in the channel at that point. Heavy showers of rain were falling. 7 feet were reported at Wheeling. At Cincinnati, yesterday, the river had risen nearly 4 feet since Saturday, but is now about at a stand. At Louisville it was rising, with about 4 feet 5 inches in the canal. The rise amounted to 6 inches at the head of the falls during the previous 24 hours. At Portland the river had risen about 18 inches, making fully 7 feet water on the bar. Thence to this point the river continues to swell gradually. The bars are all pretty well covered, and boats are passing without difficulty. Hence to Cairo the channel is clear, and there is a fine stage of water for the season. We yesterday inadvertently stated that the <Masonic Gem> was running in the place of the <Grey Eagle>. She is running on the <Bracelet's> time, and will be down to-morrow. Mr. John B. Hall is her agent. ......The <Dunbar> is the regular down river packet for to-day. She is one of the handsomest and best furnished steamers now plying, and the numerous testimonials of popular favor, which have been tendered to her officers prove them every way deserving of the patronage of the traveling public. She leaves the wharf for Paducah at 12 o'clock. ......The <Lue Eaves> having gone to Bowling Green with the mails will not be in port for Green river to-day, her regular time. She will be down again to-morrow. ......The <Grey Eagle> did not get down last evening in consequence of her getting aground at Scuffleton [sic] bar on Saturday last. She will be down here this evening without fail, at 4 o'clock, and will return at 7. The <John Gault> has been chartered to take her place as soon as the water gets too low again for the <Grey Eagle>. John B. Hall will receipt for all freights for her—at the foot of Main street—delivered any time today. The <Peytona>, which has been laid up at this place, left yesterday morning for Louisville. ......The Gallipolis <Grey Eagle> passed yesterday, en route from Cincinnati to Cairo. She discharged some freight at this point, including 15 casks liquors for Allis & Howes. She is not at present in any regular trade. Vincennes Correspondence. VINCENNES, July 10. EDITORS JOURNAL:—Wabash river fell 2 inches, with 7 feet full, in the channel. The <Caroline> passed down last Saturday with a good trip. W. H. W. ———>——— Receipts by Railroad. The wheat harvest in this vicinity is about over, and we are gratified to learn, as we do from a largo variety of sources, that the yield is much larger than was anticipated. Though not standing so thick on the ground as last year, the grain is large and heavy, and is free from all disease. Our exchanges from all parts of the country bring similar gratifying intelligence in relation to the wheat crop. The young corn also presents a most promising appearance. The late rains have given it a fresh and vigorous start, and if there is no backset the crop will be a very heavy one. vV'hat we have said of wheat and corn is also true of oats and grass. Iu some sections of the South a severe drought prevails, and the corn is burned up, but the cotton crop looks fine, and it i3 believed that a larger quantity of that great staple will be raised than ever before. There have beeu eighteen elections for President. In eleven of them the name of the individual elected ended with the letter N. With only one exception, the nume of every President who has served two terms had this termination. In oclr one cse has a candidate for re-election, with N finil in his name been defeated; and even in this case the name of the successful candidate possessed this aaspicioaa termination. Providence Journal. This fact must be N-couraging to Lincoln and Hamlin. A Nashville paper say? : The Republicans are gathering up and making "campaign documents" of 10,000 rails " which Lincoln and a man named Hanks'' are said to have split in 1830. Not to be outdone, the Baltimore Convention Democracy, with the same object in view, are hunting up all the bricks the Little Giant has carried in his hat for the last twenty years. They are said to be very numerous. In New York, according to the eelate Courier and Enquirer, the caroling of the favorite songster, the bob-a-link, has not only been changed but greatly improved. Instead of " Uob-a-lincolu," " Bob a-lin-coln," the fields, the meadows, and every cluster of waving grass, send forth the spiritstirring note of " Abe-a-Lincobi "A be-a-Lincoln." A strange fact, thi?, in ornithology ; but if any of the -Democracy doubt it, let them take a run into the rural districts, and they will at once perceive how completely the political tone of the country has adapted itself to the air of freedom which proclaims the triumph of Republicanism; and how even the feathered tribe unite in singing praises in behalf of one who has been selected to be the standard-bearer of the army of freedom, which go forth to do battle for the Constitution and the dignity of free labor. Moving. Messrs. Bright and Fitch are both in this city preparing the way for an organization of the regular Democracy, aud the presentation of an electoral ticket. So wo surmise, at least, but only judge from the well kuown determined character of the men. Mr. Bright, whatever ii is faults may be, has never been accused of a lack of decision and energy; and Mr. Pitch, with more ability, possesses probably more intensity of personal and political hostility to tho Douglas movement than his associate. What tho issuo will be we do not kuovv, but we shall be surprised if the Breckinridge men do not very speedily consolidate their strength and show themselves with a front of formidable proportions. Ind. Jour. What tub Dkmocbat8 Ark For.- Some are for reviving the slave trade ; some for u Congv.ssional slave code for the Territories; ome for Congress forbidding the Territories to prohibit Slavery within their limits ; same for maintaining Slavery iu the Territories through the J udiciary ; some for the " gurreat pur-rinciple " that " if one man would enslave another, no third man should object," fantastically called " popular sovereignty , but never a man amouir them in favor of Federal prohibition of Slavery in Federal Territories according to the practice of our fathers who framed the Government under which wo live. Abraham Lincoln A CnKmrAHLE Change. Just after the Baltimore Convention, the people of Girdley station, on the Logansport, Peoria and Burlington Railroad ran up a ilag bearing the name of "Hon. Stephen A. Douglas for President. A few days ago the inscription was removed, and now the flag Hoars to the breeeze the names of Lincoln and Hamlin. The people of Gridley have no idea in contributing to the election of Breckinride by giving their support to Douglas. Peoria Trantcript. Tlic Canvass in Illinois. The present political canvass in this section is not ouiy full of encouragement but presents many decided curiosities. Those men who vere the most enthusiastic supporters of Douglas two years ago now openly confess that Lincoln will be elected President. The German supporters ot Douglas iu '58, are with very few exceptions Lincoln wen now. There are between fifty and one hundred of these Germans in this city alone. Matters are equally eneourging throughout the country. As a straw indicating the feeliug here, we iiave to record a bet of 55300, made by a Douglas Democrat, on Saturday, in favor of Lincoln again! Douglas. There is no lukewarmness among the adherent? of Old A be. 'rcria Transcript. Tm Constitutional Union men ot New York hold their State Convention at Utica, on Thursday of this week, to decide on the policy of supporting Bell and Everett. It is insisted by Washington Hunt that an Electoral ticket committed distinctly to those candidates shall be nominated. On the other hand, some of the venal trickstoii of the party, of whom the New York Express is the organ, wish to sell out to Douglas and Johnson. An interesting struggle is anticipated. Senator Pugli, of Ohio, ia the only member of the Senate, either from the North or South, who supports Douglas.
